There have been some interesting developments in social media since President Donald J. Trump announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will issue a notice to doctors shortly that the use of Tylenol during pregnancy may be linked to an increased risk of autism.
Perhaps the most disturbing of these e-activities involves a TDS-inspired video rebellion by mothers-to-be. Pregnant women have begun sharing videos of themselves taking Tylenol online as a protest against the announcement.
Indeed, social media can be toxic in numerous ways. I blame our press, in part, for its role in endangering the welfare of these unborn children. Most of the press reports I saw failed to cite the study recently published by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, which suggests that using acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase children’s autism and ADHD risk.
Our press fueled this TSD-insanity with its coverage.
Beyond the Harvard study, a 2019 Johns Hopkins team found that higher exposure to acetaminophen in the womb was associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD in children. The researchers analyzed umbilical cord blood samples from the Boston Birth Cohort, a long-term study on pregnancy and child development.
Children with the highest cord blood levels of acetaminophen were roughly three times more likely to be later diagnosed with autism or ADHD than those with the lowest levels. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry in November 2019 (hardly known to be a right-wing den of conspiracy theory).
Not only did our elite media neglect to provide additional details countering the “safe to use” narrative, but it also did not bother to dig into what Tylenol said about the product use during pregnancy in previous years.
For example, in 2017, the makers of Tylenol stressed that the product was NOT recommended for use during pregnancy.
In 2019, Tylenol officials stated that the product had not been tested to determine its safety for use during pregnancy.
Our press clearly neglected to review its own previous work on the subject.
It is difficult for me to determine how much these awful examples of motherhood are consuming Tylenol. However, acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) is not “safe at any dose”. I am concerned about how much is being consumed to “show Trump”.
Acetaminophen overdose during pregnancy can cause serious harm to both the mother and baby and is potentially fatal. Severe liver and kidney damage, and anemia can occur in pregnant women who overdose on acetaminophen. Acetaminophen crosses the placenta; fetal liver cells metabolize the drug and can suffer severe liver and kidney effects after a toxic overdose.
I must admit: I detested Obama and Biden with the heat of 1,000,00 flaming suns. However, I would never endanger my child as part of any protest against them. My mind is struggling to deal with the videos I watched today.
I can only pray to God that no harm has been done to the innocent children. I also pray that valuable lessons have been learned about how scientific narratives can negatively impact lives and how most journalists are unwilling to conduct thorough due diligence when reporting on any subject involving Trump.
Some in the medical profession also should be ashamed.
