Victor Davis Hanson: ‘The Democratic Party Has Collapsed’

“It’s a whole new counterrevolution and they’re melting down”

During a recent appearance on the Mark Levin show on FOX News, conservative historian and scholar Victor Davis Hanson declared that the Democratic Party has collapsed. It’s hard to disagree with his argument.

Hanson points to the outcome of the 2024 election, the party’s repeated mistake of being on the wrong side of major issues, and their ongoing flailing rage over everything Trump says or does.

Hanson also suggests that Trump is doing something no other Republican has ever done. Instead of just reacting to what the left does, Trump is going after their sources of power.

Watch the whole thing below. This is great:

Hanson talked about this new Trump strategy in a recent essay at the Daily Signal:

Trump’s Counterrevolution Is Succeeding Beyond Expectations

Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for The Daily Signal. We’re watching the greatest counterrevolution in some 90 years. We have not seen any president try to radically change the political calculus and the nature of government since Franklin D. Roosevelt did it, from the Left, during the New Deal of the mid-1930s.

And what do I mean by that? President Donald Trump closed the border. Nobody thought he could. He closed it. He has now deported over 100,000 criminal illegal aliens and 1 million have self-deported, of all statuses, who were here illegally.

He’s basically declared war on DEI. And he’s winning that argument. He has barred biological males from competing in women’s sports. He has full public support for doing that and he’s making enormous inroads.

The universities are rushing and competing with each other to cut a deal with Donald Trump, and to agree to not gouge the federal government on federal grants through their surcharges of way over 40% or 50%; to follow civil rights legislation, the Supreme Court, and not discriminate by race or gender, as they do in admissions, hiring, promotion, tenure; and to be disinterested and be fair and follow, as I said, free speech canons in the Bill of Rights on campus.

What am I getting at? Donald Trump is winning on all of these social and cultural issues.

Abroad, we see that Iran no longer poses a nuclear threat for the immediate future; that Israel’s enemies—whether Hezbollah or Hamas or Houthis—are in disarray or severely attrited; Iran is no longer a threat to the Gulf states or Israel, at least for the immediate future; and we see some progress with Ukrainian war.

People are angry about this counterrevolution for two reasons: It’s succeeding and it’s succeeding beyond anybody’s wild expectation.

Well, ok, but its the Democrat Party.

There has never been anything Democratic about the Democrat Party.

Correct. They’re gheyracecommunists whose party platform is ‘Abort all the babies, and trans the rest who survive.’ Literally. The Dems had a butcher wagon outside their DNC nominating convention in 2024, a topless troon on the WH lawn the prior year, and a vid posted online of interns squeekhole porking in a senate hearing room.

These are evil people. Never again.

Not sure if you’re being facetious, but, for the record, the proper name is the Democratic Party.

Callng it the Democrat Party, is considered. a slur.

Just passing the information along, so don’t kiill the messenger…

    ” I don’t belong to any organized political party; I’m a Democrat.”

    Bob Hope

It was funny when he said it in the 1940’s, but it’s funnier (and truer) today.

My doctor (whom I’ve known for years) is a Leftie, but not -completely- irrational. He just has that misguided conviction the government can fix human behavior.

He told me his wife went insane over Sydney Sweeney

I asked him to tell her two things.

    1. Getting mad about Sweeney’s jeans is not going to attract any new members to the Democrats.

    2. It’s completely clear to me what the Democrats are -against- but I have no idea what they propose to do instead…. .

As we saw in Baltimore Harbor, collapsing something can often be achieved in a surprisingly short time with comparatively little effort. But the cleanup takes a lot of effort and a lot of time, and meanwhile the routes you need to use are impeded or impassible.

I said exactly this in a comment here this morning.

But the closest I’ll ever get to the Hoover Institute is vacuuming my carpet.

But I agree with VDH that something huge is afoot. The D’s are going so fast to the left that a sonic boom is coming.

We’ll see a year from now but I’ll go out on a limb and say that the D’s are not only not going to take either chamber but they’re going to get wiped out in historic fashion.

And it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

If Trump succeeds with his census plan to reallocate Congressional seats the GOP could have an overwhelming house margin after the 26 elections.

I agree with Dr. Hanson about the collapse of the Democrat Party with one caveat. They have collapsed as a party practicing conventional electoral politics as it is normally done in the United States. However, given their Leftist theology; they are still likely practitioners of Clausewitzian “politics by other means”. We cannot forget this, nor be taken by surprise when they choose to get kinetic.

Yet, my conservative union
supporter Brother in law is still a Democrat, and will be till the day he dies

I can’t wrap my head around peoples failure to see reality

He actually thinks this the the Kennedy Democratic Party

Have you seen the propagandem headlines, “news”, and sustained attacks via all manner of media and entertainment? It’s so twisted, there’s no wonder at all as to how the rank and file left-leaners think and feel based on what they are exposed to.

Conservative Beaner | August 17, 2025 at 6:30 pm

They will be honest for once and say we are Socialist, and we have a plan.

JackinSilverSpring | August 17, 2025 at 6:57 pm

As much as I would like to agree with VDH, I do not see a DemoncRat party that has collapsed. I see a party in disarray, but not collapsed. Its spokespeople say crazy and its leaders having done evil things, but regretfully there is a very large chunk of the population that will vote for anyone representing that party.

FelixTheCat in reply to JackinSilverSpring. | August 17, 2025 at 11:11 pm

    Otherwise mostly known as AWFLs.

Correct. I’ve heard this before, and the Democrats always come back. They get declared dead more often than the Joker. Mind you I’m not sure exactly how they recover from this, but I don’t doubt that they will.

The trick is to chop out their roots, which Trump is doing. He’s going after their *funding.* He’s attacking their base power structures and the NGOs that launder money for the party. He’s forcing them to defend the indefensible publicly. He’s making them turn further and further to the left, historically a poison pill.

We’ll see. My suspicion is that we’ll see some sort of massive international crisis (like Covid was back in 2020) that will seek to force the unruly people back into the box.

The thing that is doing them the most damage is cutting back the money they can grift from the government. But it is not yet completely cut off and the moment President Trump is gone from office (if not before) they will pull out all the stops in trying to get it back.

This looks like a culture war from the outside but it’s really over money. Keep up the pressure!

CommoChief in reply to irv. | August 18, 2025 at 7:55 am

Yep. The flow of funds from Govt to NGOs needs to be shut down completely. It would be nice if we could get more memoir Congress on board with voting to eliminate non core Federal spending boondoggles instead of the very few who do so being pilloried, The good thing is that this Admin is also working in parallel to begin the task of pulling weeds inside the bureaucracy to remove the ideologues. That’s gonna take far more time, effort and willingness to trudge ahead.

The Democrats are going over the cliff willingly….because that is what crazed leftists and Muslims do.

VDH the lone surviving conservative voice at stanford. What ever happened to the hoover institute? Stanford is woke joke nowadays, same as berkeley.

destroycommunism | August 18, 2025 at 12:50 pm

The Lefts agenda has ALWAYS been the same …government over the people,, so it has NOT COLLAPSED

its roots are showing and no cosmetic surgery can cover it up…

but the msm and the gop looking the other way ..yeah,,it just gains strength

pablo panadero | August 18, 2025 at 4:36 pm

The Democratic Party has been a criminal organization masquerading as a political party since the Clinton years, but was issued steroids during Obama’s three terms. Luckily they are horrible with money management, so they have little cash left from the USAID money laundering of the past 20 years, and their flying monkeys of the MSM are losing their influence.

It still remains a question whether there new voters Trump acquired are short-term Trump or long-term GOP voters, but I have confidence the politicians like Lindsey Graham will screw it up royally and piss off half of them.

Jaundiced Observer | August 20, 2025 at 10:26 am

It’s funny in a sheesh funny way that conservatives seem actually to believe that the Democrat party is on its way out.

Republican incompetence and the inexorable laws of history mean that their exile is merely temporary.

The apparent conservative resurgence is just a transitory (as Joe Biden would say) event.

The secular trend is towards progressivism and away from conservatism. Just look at the past century.

The have been “conservative” events – think Eisenhower, Reagan are Trump. How many of them actually reversed progressive programs? Trump managed to rescind NPR and PBS funding but not eliminate the entities. The ratchet works in only one direction.
