Trump, Zelenskyy Meet in D.C. With Numerous European Leaders

Trump, Zelenskyy Meet in D.C. With Numerous European Leaders

Trump hates war. He’s truly one of the few presidents we’ve had who wants to end all wars.

President Donald Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at 1:00 PM ET, with the meeting starting at 1:15 PM ET.

The president’s schedule said Trump will greet the European leaders at 2:15 PM ET.

Trump and Zelenskyy

Trump and Zelenskyy will likely discuss what happened between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin last Friday to end the war once they finish the press conference.

This press conference went way better than the one in February.

Meeting With European Leaders

The confirmed European leaders: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Von der Leyen said the EU supports a meeting between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia.

Finnish President Alex Stubb admitted more progress has happened to end this war these past two weeks that in the last three years.

I’m glad Trump keeps reminding people that a lot of the responsibility falls on Zelenskyy and Ukraine. We cannot hold their hands:

Trump: “President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine and this is one of the key points that we need to consider and we’re going to be considering that at the table. Also, like, who will do what, essentially? I’m optimistic that collectively we can reach an agreement that would deter any future aggression against Ukraine and I actually think there won’t be. I think that’s even over overrated, largely overrated, but we’re going to find out. And I think that the European nations are going to take a lot of the burden. We’re going to help them, and we’re going to make it very secure. We also need to discuss the possible exchanges of territory taken into consideration, the current line of contact. That means the war zone, the war lines that are pretty obvious. Very sad, actually, to look at them and negotiating positions. President Putin also, you have president of Ukraine who is — you just met a little while ago, and we’re going to try and get a — a three party meeting maybe as soon as we can. And I have a feeling you and President Putin are going to work something out.

Ultimately, this is a decision that can only be made by President Zelenskyy and by the people of Ukraine working also together in an agreement with President Putin and I just think that’s a very good things are going to come of it.

So, I hope we have a good meeting and if we can have a good meeting, I’ll set up a meeting with president Putin. And if you’d like, I’ll go to that meeting. And not that I want to do that, but I will do that because we want to save a lot of people from dying. A lot of people are dying, and we’ve got to save them. We’ve got to save it. 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 people. Sometimes a week. All of us would obviously prefer an immediate ceasefire while we work on a lasting peace. And maybe something like that could happen. As of this moment, it’s not happening. But, President Zelenskyy and president Putin can talk a little bit more about that.”

—–

I wonder if this meeting will end up as contentious as Zelenskyy’s first visit in February.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff said Ukraine will receive “Article 5-like protections.”

NATO’s Article 5 guarantees members would respond if one member is attacked. I believe NATO invoked the article after 9/11.

Well, Ukraine is not a member of Ukraine, which is why Witkoff’s language is important: Article 5-LIKE protections.

The security guarantees will come from some European allies and the U.S. instead of NATO.

That explains why many European leaders decided to join Zelenskyy at the White House today.

Z should ask for fjb to be present during these negotiations

    The UN website says:

“The United Nations was created in 1945, following the devastation of the Second World War, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. The UN accomplishes this by working to prevent conflict, helping parties in conflict make peace, deploying peacekeepers, and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish.”

Since the war began, Zelenksy has visited in person the following:

      Once: 17 various countries
      Twice: the UN
      Three Times: Canada and Netherlands
      Four Times: Saudi Arabia
Six Times: Lithuania and the Vatican
      Eight Times: Turkey
Nine Times: Belgium, Italy, UK and the US
      Ten Times: Poland
      Eleven Times: France
      Twelve times: Germany

I think, that in the absence of the UN taking the initiative, Trump is setting the stage for negotiations. I would think that Z will have to be present in any actual negotiations. I do not see how he can be left out.

But what good is the UN?

gonzotx in reply to Paula. | August 18, 2025 at 2:56 pm

      It’s a money laundering business
      Plain and simple

During the Rwanda genocide, the UN was there, with plenty of armed soldiers
      ….did nothing
Let millions be chopped up like liver

      Women , children

I think Z would want fjb as his support unit

Aarradin in reply to Paula. | August 18, 2025 at 9:40 pm

Based on its spending, its obvious that the sole purpose of the UN is to eradicate Israel.

And they don’t care if every Israeli dies in the process. In fact, virtually everyone at the UN would prefer that.

    Why?

Z is dressed in all black “sort of” suit

Gezz, what an idiot

Paula in reply to gonzotx. | August 18, 2025 at 1:35 pm

    Ukrainian zootsuit?

Sanddog in reply to gonzotx. | August 18, 2025 at 2:10 pm

It’s a black shirt, black tie and black jacket. That qualifies.

All this focus on what Zelensky wears is making the right look shallow and stupid.

I disagree. Men who are serious dress seriously. Men who don’t dress seriously on serious occasions are larpers.

gonzotx in reply to Sanddog. | August 18, 2025 at 3:19 pm

No, it makes z look even smaller and a clown that should not be considered a serious person

Johnny Cache in reply to Sanddog. | August 18, 2025 at 3:47 pm

No, you don’t look like a 5.11 blowout sale when you meet the president at the White House.

Last time he was here, Zelensky got chewed out, justifiably, for what he said and how stupid he looked. He should dress like a grown ass man and behave like one.

Sanddog in reply to Johnny Cache. | August 18, 2025 at 3:52 pm

Why not? The President is a citizen who was elected to temporarily lead the country. He’s not a monarch, he’s not a God, it’s time we stop treating them as if they were. I expect citizens to respect the office but I don’t expect foreign leaders to behave like supplicants. Their positions are equal.

lichau in reply to Sanddog. | August 18, 2025 at 9:44 pm

It isn’t the POTUS as a person–whoever he might be. It is the position–the leader of the (allegedly) free world.

henrybowman in reply to Sanddog. | August 19, 2025 at 7:12 pm

From my favorite German master of smarm:

In advance of the summit, Trump wrote on Truth Social that “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.” Hours before Zelensky’s appearance, Trump’s team ominously asked whether the President of Ukraine planned to wear a suit and tie this time, or whether he would be sporting his customarily grating, focus-grouped pseudo-military garb. In the end, the man opted for the middle path of an ill-fitting black jacket over a black shirt, reprising the janitor-cum-house-burglar look he debuted at the NATO summit last June…

He’s going for the Mao’s pajamas look.

Well he did leave the track suit in the Hotel.

Is VP Vance and Rubio there?

I wish President Trump would stop talking about “poor me, the media doesn’t like me”

Move on

Nobody listens or likes them

In the 1850’s, France and Britain convinced and then supported Turkey to wage war with Russia. Despite agreeing to many of the issues, the Russians were not given an option other than war. Now that the Ukrainian War is now a modern version of trench warfare and a meat grinder of men, Europe and the Pro-Ukraine segment of the US government and its a$$ociates have to leave Ukraine not holding on to its original land. For Russia, it may be a pyrrhic victory, but a victory none the less. This war shouldn’t have happened but the ones that started it have not shed a single drop of blood…. but should… much more.

It’s not a meeting unless there are black leaders there.

Like most men who grew up in the late 1960s/early 1970s, I had a suit just like Zelensky’s, only mine was blue…and it looked great for my 3rd-grade school pictures They were called leisure suits. I guess they’re coming back, yet another style trend that I’ll ignore.

Part of a comment yesterday, quoting Witkoff:

“We have agreed on serious security guarantees, which I would describe as game-changing. We did not think that we would be so close to an agreement on protection under Article 5 by the United States, legislative consolidation in Obligations of the Russian Federation not to encroach on other territories after the codification of the peace agreement, as well as legislative consolidation in the The Russian Federation has obligations not to attack other European countries and not to violate their sovereignty. So we have come to an agreement, and that’s not all,”

What a little creep.

MoeHowardwasright | August 18, 2025 at 2:57 pm

Of Zelensky walks we stop all war making material heading to Ukraine and the NATO allies. We also stop the money propping up their government and pensions. Quite frankly I am done with this European entanglement. This is what George Washington warned us about.

My guess is that Zelenskyy will have to be replaced before a deal gets done.

    TargaGTS in reply to Obie1. | August 18, 2025 at 3:18 pm

I think so too. Ultimately, even though Russia has proven to be laughably inept militarily, Putin holds all the cards because he doesn’t have any political or popular opposition and that seems unlikely to change without economic collapse in Russia. So, Zelenskyy is going to have to bend over or be replaced. But, there may not be a readily available (or any) mechanism to do that as Ukraine is under martial law and their elections have been suspended. Someone may need to write him a massive check to go away…if even that will be enough.

mailman in reply to TargaGTS. | August 18, 2025 at 6:00 pm

And as long as Europe keeps buying Russian gas there is little likelihood of anything happening to the Russian economy.

Ignore the Eurotrash. They don’t get a say until they fund their own defense and not even then. Think anyone cares what Belgium or Finland has to say? The answer is NO.

henrybowman in reply to ztakddot. | August 19, 2025 at 7:19 pm

From the same piece I cited above:

The Russians, in other words, will cease fighting only when Ukraine surrenders.

Trump scheduled yesterday’s White House summit to convey these terms to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Terrified that the American president would force an unfavourable peace upon Ukraine, European leaders piled into their neon-green clowncar and headed for Washington as well.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte – they were all there. Alas, they were not allowed to intrude upon Trump’s private meeting with Zelensky, because they don’t matter very much.

Anyone else notice that whilst in the Whitehouse, every one of these world leaders spoke only English?
