President Donald Trump caused a stir among conservatives when he said America would welcome 600,000 Chinese students.
Speaking at the White House Monday, the president’s announcement signals a potential thaw in U.S.-China relations after escalating tariffs and restrictions on Chinese students.”I hear so many stories that we’re not going to allow their students,” Trump told reporters.”We’re going to allow their students to come in. It’s very important, 600,000 students. It’s very important. But we’re going to get along with China,” he added.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick how allowing Chinese students in is remotely close to America First?
It’s insane. Ingraham makes it clear it isn’t America first because it denies a spot for American students:
“With all due respect, how is allowing 600K students from the Communist country of China putting America first?””But why are you helping Harvard? UCLA, Berkeley. Y’all helping those schools, why? They’re basically factories of anti-American propaganda, now they’re getting a big influx of cash because of the Chinese students…I just don’t understand it. Those are 600K spots that Americans won’t get.”LUTNICK: “If you didn’t have those 600K students, you’d empty them from the top, all the students would go up to better schools, and the bottom 15% of universities would go out of business in America. President Trump’s taking a rational economic view.”
I mean, the move goes against everything the administration has said and done since Trump took office.
America already has 270,000 Chinese students enrolled in colleges across the country.
Remember State Secretary Marco Rubio in May? “The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” he wrote on X.
Why did Rubio make the decision? Because of situations like the one Mike wrote about in the above article: Instances of Chinese students spying. Fox News noted a few out of many in a May article.
On July 30, Education Secretary Linda McMahon told Fox News that the department has been working with universities to reduce the number of Chinese students accepted instead of American students.
Which one is it?
Many hardcore Trump supporters have expressed outrage over Trump’s change of heart.
This is what happens when you rely too much on China. The tariff war has been paused since May after Trump slapped China with a 145% tariff, and China shot back with a 125% tariff.
