President Donald Trump caused a stir among conservatives when he said America would welcome 600,000 Chinese students.
Speaking at the White House Monday, the president’s announcement signals a potential thaw in U.S.-China relations after escalating tariffs and restrictions on Chinese students.
“I hear so many stories that we’re not going to allow their students,” Trump told reporters.
“We’re going to allow their students to come in. It’s very important, 600,000 students. It’s very important. But we’re going to get along with China,” he added.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick how allowing Chinese students in is remotely close to America First?
It’s insane. Ingraham makes it clear it isn’t America first because it denies a spot for American students:
“With all due respect, how is allowing 600K students from the Communist country of China putting America first?”
“But why are you helping Harvard? UCLA, Berkeley. Y’all helping those schools, why? They’re basically factories of anti-American propaganda, now they’re getting a big influx of cash because of the Chinese students…I just don’t understand it. Those are 600K spots that Americans won’t get.”
LUTNICK: “If you didn’t have those 600K students, you’d empty them from the top, all the students would go up to better schools, and the bottom 15% of universities would go out of business in America. President Trump’s taking a rational economic view.”

I mean, the move goes against everything the administration has said and done since Trump took office.
America already has 270,000 Chinese students enrolled in colleges across the country.
Remember State Secretary Marco Rubio in May? “The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” he wrote on X.
Why did Rubio make the decision? Because of situations like the one Mike wrote about in the above article: Instances of Chinese students spying. Fox News noted a few out of many in a May article.
On July 30, Education Secretary Linda McMahon told Fox News that the department has been working with universities to reduce the number of Chinese students accepted instead of American students.

I am one who does not suffer from TES* So, I do not see everything that Trump does as being some four dimensional chess game. He’s been making some decisions lately that I’m not really excited about and in some cases are downright scary. This includes taking government stake and defense contractors among other things.

Then the credentials earned by foreign students (who displaced US Citizens) will be used as the excuse to grant work visas to them so Corporations can hire them instead of US Citizens.
‘Golly we’d love to hire US Citizens with a MS or PHD from MIT or wherever but gee whiz there’s not enough US Citizens with those credentials so we got no choice but to hire foreign labor’.

And they aren’t taking “our culture” home with them – heck, they’re immersing themselves in their own culture of marxism by going to US colleges. Actually, GWB, a fair number of colleges have thin finances right now. That’s why they welcome the foreign students who pay full price. Take that away, and yes, the bottom 5 to 10 percent of colleges would fail. The question to be answered is, would that cause any lasting harm to our country?
Too many people go to college who should never go to college for a variety of reasons. I have no problem with shutting down the bottom 25% of colleges and culling worthless majors like gender studies from the rest.
There were a good number of Chinese students at my state university. They never interacted with anyone else. They had the latest tech, only drove new European luxury cars, lived in the best townhouses, and dressed expensively (though not well). They never went to university social events or parties. As soon as classes were done, they were on the first plane back to China. They were here to do one thing.
A lot of takeaways from this. The one that interests me is that it reinforces what a weak position we are in with the Chicoms when it comes to trade agreements. It’s a virtual certainty that Trump is announcing this because the Chinese made this a condition of moving forward with any kind of trade agreement.
It’s an insanely stupid decision and the exact opposite of America First. I’ll be interested to see how the usual suspects in MAGA world defend this decision…or if Fox News covers it at all.

Yes, our position is weak. We can’t make the stuff we need to make to function as the first-world society we otherwise are. We gave that up over the last 30 years and it will take a decade or two to get it back, assuming that we try to do so. Whatever weaknesses China has (and they have them), this is one where they can squeeze us, and they’re just the kind of government and people to squeeze.
But if you can think outside a wet paper bag, they’ve got nothing to squeeze us with.
If we need “competent” students (because the Democrat teacher unions have screwed the pooch in our feeder schools), there’s absolutely nothing that ays they have to be Chinese.
The Japanese are academically overmotivated. Indians. South Koreans, Heck, I’m sure there are Germans, Swiss, Austrians, you name it, who would trade a gonad for the opportunity to study high tech in the USA (and stay here afterwards).
If we’re actually on a hunt to invite immigrants, let’s not restrict ourselves to the countries who have been flooding us with immigrants for the past 15 years, shutting everybody else out.

I’m on faculty at a university. We have our share of foreign students. Most are quiet and studious. A few are involved in the SJP nonsense (they can go home today, I have no sympathy for them). Are a few of them sending home information to the motherland? Yes, I suspect they are.
It does seem that this is an unforced error by the Trump administration — if I were advising Mr. Trump and I were the diabolical, cynical guy that I know I could rise to be, I’d advise the President to use this as a bargaining chip with the Chinese. We get what we want, the students stay. We get some of what we want, some of them stay. And so on.
The value of these students in the U.S. is non-zero to China. I’d figure out what that value is and use it.

The costs of going to universities have risen much higher than inflation plus they have added useless degrees that do not get you jobs.
