Trump Announces Trade Deal With Vietnam, Including ‘Access to Their Markets’
30% of Vietnam’s exports go to America, which makes the country “vulnerable to Trump’s tariffs.”
President Donald Trump announced a new trade deal with Vietnam as the tariff draws near.
Trump wrote on Truth Social:
It is my Great Honor to announce that I have just made a Trade Deal with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after speaking with To Lam, the Highly Respected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It will be a Great Deal of Cooperation between our two Countries. The Terms are that Vietnam will pay the United States a 20% Tariff on any and all goods sent into our Territory, and a 40% Tariff on any Transshipping. In return, Vietnam will do something that they have never done before, give the United States of America TOTAL ACCESS to their Markets for Trade. In other words, they will “OPEN THEIR MARKET TO THE UNITED STATES,” meaning that, we will be able to sell our product into Vietnam at ZERO Tariff. It is my opinion that the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam. Dealing with General Secretary To Lam, which I did personally, was an absolute pleasure. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Trump slapped Vietnam with a 46% tariff on “Liberation Day.”
The president later suspended the tariff for 90 days, which would have expired next week.
Trump has only reached a new trade deal with the United Kingdom. China and America agreed to a tariff truce.

US-Argentinean trade deal.
Mercosur Constraints:
“Mercosur’s requirement for unanimous approval of external trade deals poses a challenge. Milei has criticized this rule, suggesting Argentina might exit the bloc to pursue a U.S. deal independently.”
Getting the deal signed should be the State Dept’s top priority. Milei needs all the support we can give him.
Make Trade Deals Great Again.
Yes, especially with communist countries like Viet Nam which killed over 50,000 American soldiers. Make America Great Again! as Trump says. He doesn’t care about the 50,000 Americans killed, because he was a coward who received 5 college deferments during the Vietnam War because of his billionaire father. He’s a draft dodger. So of course he wants to make trade deals with Viet Nam. He should appear at a press conference with Jane Fonda.
What a pathetic reach that post is, JR. I’d expect no less though.
I have no problem with anyone dodging the draft. The draft is slavery and the US should never have been in Vietnam. I would have used every resource available to me to get out of it too. I have no desire to get killed or seriously injured in a foreign country. Don’t forget, Biden also received multiple deferments from the draft for asthma while working as a lifeguard. I would say we won over Vietnam in the long run because they now make our stuff for pennies.
What years were you in-country, Junior?
Did you even serve at all? How many deferments did you get?
Or did the Draft Board just throw up their hands and declare you 4-F?
Junior may never have been in country but shows signs of being incontinent.
Remind us of your service?
That’s not even a rational post. By your logic we should immediately cut off all trade with Germany, England, Japan, Russia, Canada, Mexico and so on.
Classic trolling behavior, and JR feeds his damaged ego by being annoying enough to provoke indignation from his intellectual betters. Still, sometimes it is fun to go troll baiting until they lose it completely and get overtly psychotic. I learned a lot of Russian Cyrillic cuss words that way on Quorum after the Ukrainian invasion.
If that’s the standard, we shouldn’t be doing business with blue cities. Look how many citizens get murdered there.
I know Trump’s ancestry is German, but does he have to continue to capitalize every damn noun in everything he writes?
Petty complaint, who gives a s.
I do that in twit posts because I’m trying to emphasize items. He’s president of the United States. What he writes is Important!
You’re correct. He needs Paula’s edit button obviously.
China launders good through Vietnam so I am not sure I necessarily see this as a good thing. Plus manufacturing moves to Vietnam just as easily as it moves to China.
Now there’s an enforcement mechanism on the ‘arbitrage’ of Chinese goods routed through Vietnam. Got a carrot of a 20% tariff on Vietnam v 40% for China. This acts as pull to draw manufacturing out of China to Vietnam which weakens China. There’s also far more attention being paid to potential trans shipment from high tariff to low tariff jurisdictions. I suspect that regular inspection of goods routed from Vietnam would eventually catch Chinese firms trying to avoid a higher tariff and result in a bad outcome for Vietnam. They have too much to lose to risk that crap. Maybe some underpaid lower level guys at the dock could be bribed but I’d think the govt would be wise to how any corruption works and would be proactive.
Generally Vietnam is cheaper manufacturing than China anyway. China has lost jobs to cheaper Vietnamese products sold within China. China now does higher end manufacturing, having lost much of the lower end.
So the clever “transshipment tariff” (I didn’t see that coming!) cuts China out even more, while giving native Vietnamese industry the advantage. That probably helped in getting Vietnam to go along with this.
While we sell SUV’s in Vietnam, can we get some cheap Vietnamese EV’s here?
Hey, I hit on Temu-class bargains like anybody else, but I do try to stay away from items with the potential to spontaneously combust.
I’d rather not have third-world EVs with every possible corner cut rolling on our roads. The Vinfast EV has gotten very poor reviews and it’s built by Vietnam’s largest conglomerate. If that’s the best they can do I don’t want to see their worst. We have much higher standards than “it’s better than piling the whole family and fifty pounds of rice on a Honda Super Cub”.
“Launders” because Vietnam shares a border with China and there is a lot of corruption and tariff evasion. Anyway, what happened to bringing manufacturing home? Frankly I think this is a gift to Tim Cook (Apple) to make peace. IPhones will now be made in Vietnam.
once again
exposing the socialists need for capitalism
Hey! Capitalism is not the Politically Correct term in China!
It’s “Compassionate Communism!”
Trump’s tariff deal suggests that one can argue, with considerable justification, that we lost the war in Vietnam, but actually won the peace.
