This looks an awful lot like what just happened with Columbia.

Bloomberg reports:

Cornell Edges Closer to Deal With White House to Restore Funding

Cornell University is advancing in talks with the Trump administration to reinstate hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding amid efforts by the White House to get schools to resolve allegations of campus antisemitism, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Ivy League school is likely to be among the next to settle with the government after Columbia University announced a sweeping agreement with the White House on Wednesday, according to the people. Neither Cornell nor the White House would comment on the talks.

A White House official said other schools are also close to deals, including Brown and Northwestern. Northwestern declined to comment and Brown did not respond to a request for comment.

While the terms with Cornell are still loose and a deal isn’t imminent, it is expected to broadly mirror the model of Columbia’s settlement, with a cash fine to civil rights violations as well as a wide set of reforms.

Columbia, which saw more than $400 million in grants and contracts frozen, said on Wednesday that it will pay $200 million to settle accusations of civil rights violations, and made a series of commitments including sharing more information with federal agencies about hiring and admissions decisions, restructuring how it oversees student protests, and tightening rules against disruptive or masked demonstrations.

The administration expects Cornell to settle for a substantial amount but less than Columbia, a person familiar with the negotiations said.

Dozens of universities have come under pressure from the Trump administration over allegations they ignored complaints of campus antisemitism in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and ensuing war. The administration has also criticized schools for discrimination in hiring, diversity, equity and inclusion programs, lack of conservative view points, and allowing transgender athletes in women’s sports.

I wonder if these settlements include some sort of monitored enforcement mechanisms? One of the hospitals where our group practice is contracted is finally working out of its consent decree from seven years ago with Medicare, and they still have the CMS compliance attorneys/auditors coming in for a last “colonoscopy” next month. We’re not part of the hospital’s issue, however our attorney briefed us on how these federal settlements work. Scary.
