‘Sex and the City’ star’s trans kid joins hunger strike for Gaza with U. Chicago academics
“Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon’s daughter is joining an “indefinite” hunger strike for Gaza in Chicago, which reportedly includes a pair of University of Chicago academics.
Seph Mozes, formerly known as Samantha until her transition to male several years ago, is an “observant Jew” according to Nixon, and part of the Chicago Jewish Voice for Peace’s strike which began Monday, the New York Post reports.
Nixon noted Mozes, who graduated from U. Chicago (pictured, below), was “partially inspired” to join the protest because she’s the grand-daughter of Holocaust survivors.
“[S]he and five other of h[er] compatriots are doing a hunger strike in Chicago [since] Monday, for Gaza,” Nixon said. The star noted the strikers’ motto is “Stop starving Gaza, stop arming Israel.”
“[Seph] doesn’t have illusions that [s]he’s going to end the war, but I think [s]he wants to do everything [s]he can,” Nixon added.
U. Chicago professor Eman Abdelhadi, director of graduate studies in the Department of Comparative Human Development, posted on X Monday that two of the hunger strikers are fellow UChicago academics.
“No business as usual during genocide,” Abdelhadi wrote.

Yeah, I saw this last week. First of all, Mozes is not Jewish. Nixon is not Jewish, and Mozes hasn’t converted, so Mozes isn’t either.
I’d bet the same is true of most people involved in the so-called “Jewish Voice for Peace”; I’d bet fewer than 50% of them are actually Jews.
As for “observant Jew”, neither Nixon nor Mozes would recognize one if they stepped on his talleth. Mozes is certainly not one. There may be some actual Jews involved in JVP, but none that make even an attempt at observing the 613 commandments, or acknowledge them to be binding.
An observant Jew is required to believe that a messiah (an anointed king) will arrive at any moment and restore the entire Jewish nation to our land. All of it, including the Gaza strip. Which means the current occupants will be expelled. At that time there will be peace because none will dare challenge the king’s rule. Someone who doesn’t believe that and eagerly anticipate it is by definition not an observant Jew.
JVP, of course, will demonstrate against that king, so they can’t be described as observant, faithful, believing, or anything like that. But he will not be impressed by hunger strikes.

It shouldn’t be new. CBST has been around for more than 50 years. It’s supposed to be a synagogue where gay people can feel at home and not made to feel unwelcome, like they have to hide or be ashamed or are somehow less worthy than other congregants. Which in itself is a laudable goal; everyone should be welcome in any house of worship. But in the 1970s there weren’t any synagogues that gay people could attend without feeling out of place, so they made their own. Nowadays there are many mainstream synagogues, even a fair number of Orthodox ones, where this is also true.
On the religious front CBST is “progressive” but not affiliated with any specific movement. Definitely not Orthodox in any way; can’t even pass as Orthodox. And politically it’s very much on the left. Far left. Randy Weingarten’s wife is the rabbi; that itself should tell you all you need to know. Gay people are welcome there, but not if they are zionist, or vote Republican, or have a normal thought in their head.
