Syrian Interior Ministry spokesman Noureddine Al-Baba said the government suspects ISIS bombed a Greek Orthodox church just outside of Damascus on Sunday.
“A suicide attacker affiliated with the Daesh (IS) terrorist group entered the Saint Elias church in the Dweila area of the capital Damascus where he opened fire, then blew himself up with an explosive belt,” according to the Interior Ministry.
The bombing killed at least 22 people and injured 63.
At least 22 people were killed, and 63 others were injured in the attack that took place at the Mar Elias Church in Dweil’a, located on the outskirts of Damascus. It reportedly began while people were praying. The perpetrator first opened fire on the worshipers, before detonating himself.
While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Syrian Interior Ministry spokesman Noureddine Al-Baba suggested ISIS as a likely culprit following a preliminary investigation.
“The security of places of worship is a red line,” Al-Baba said further, castigating ISIS and what remains of the former government of Ba’athist dictator Bashar al-Assad as actors trying to destabilize Syria.
Meletius Shahati, one of the priests, said a second gunman “shot at the church door before the other person detonated himself.”
The bombing is the first attack in Syria in years.
The new Islamic government, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, has tried to “strengthen ties with minority communities.”
The government has shown concern over terrorist sleeper cells in Syria, eager to take advantage of the uncertainty of the country shedding decades of control of the Bashar family.

I have inlaws that winter in Palm Springs. I worry their church could become a target.
If Ca whackos will go after an infertility treatment, I’m amazed the church is still standing.
like the japanese in ww2
this is a martyr religion
1,400 years of this Islamofascist/Muslim supremacist belligerence, atrocities and genocides visited upon Jews, Christians, HIndus, Buddhists and other non-Muslims, and, European, leftist dhimmis and American Dhimmi-crats still think that they can flatter and successfully “negotiate” with these goose-stepping fanatics.
As I’ve said over and over again unless and until Christians get off their high horses and start defending the faith this will continue to happen over and over again. And we k now exactly who is doing it. So for every Christiaan murdered two moslems need to suffer the same fate. For every Christian church burned to the ground. Two mosques. Make it that Christians will no longer be sheep to the slaughter for islam to do with as they please. That’s the only way incidents like this will stop. If they know the consequences for their actions will be severe. That is all.
$$$ from Iran? Perish the thought that Iran would be involved with terrorism. Victor Davis Hanson has a podcast on the two types of Iranian diaspora in USA. Those that got out before ’79 (Pro-American) and those that came after who believe that the world they wanted in 1979 was converted into a Islamic terrorist world… because of the US and not who they thought that they could control but lost it. Anyone bringing up 1953 is really in the later camp. Considerind what little the Carter Admin did, to say that the US position with the Islamist takeover led to present day Iran is wishful agitprop. Oh, and they are living in The Great Satan to boot.
As if there is any difference at all between the “Syrian Government” and “ISIS”.
