David Hogg Out At Democratic National Committee

The election of gun control activist David Hogg as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in February has been controversial from the start, but became a real problem for the party when he made it clear that he was planning to primary various office holders.

In May, the process of removing him from this role began in earnest and now it’s done. Hogg is out.

The writing was on the wall last week, when a call between DNC chair Ken Martin and Hogg was leaked to the press in which a clearly frustrated Martin basically threatened to quit.

Hogg declines to run again for DNC vice chair after new election is called

David Hogg will not run again for his Democratic National Committee vice chairman position, he announced on Tuesday, amid a firestorm the 25-year-old activist sparked over his pledge to take on “ineffective” Democratic incumbents.

DNC members removed Hogg and Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta through a virtual vote on Wednesday night, stemming from a procedural complaint unrelated to Hogg’s primary activities.

In a statement, Hogg said “there is a fundamental disagreement about the role of a Vice Chair — and it’s okay to have disagreements.” But, Hogg continued, “what isn’t okay is allowing this to remain our focus when there is so much more we need to be focused on.”

Hogg said he would now focus his efforts on Leaders We Deserve, the group he co-founded, which said it would take on “asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats by pledging to spend $20 million on safe-seat Democratic primaries. Hogg’s plan, announced in April, triggered a wave of anger from elected officials and DNC members, who argued that Hogg’s role as a party leader conflicted with the decision to take on incumbents.

The way the DNC removed Hogg from this position is extremely complicated. The organization’s woke rule structure would confuse anyone.

The DNC had voted hours earlier to accept a recommendation from its Credentials Committee that the party hold two new vice chair elections because it found the DNC mistakenly created an advantage for the two male candidates, Hogg and Kenyatta, as it managed the internal elections at the end of a marathon February party meeting in Washington.

On Wednesday evening, the DNC announced that 75% of the votes its members cast in a virtual election were in favor of the recommendation, a vote of 294-99. It said 89% of its members participated in the virtual election.

Because DNC rules require equal gender representation on its executive committee, not including the party chair, the results of elections in February meant the DNC had to elect at least one man to its final two vice chair slots. But instead of holding individual votes for each position, one to be filled by a man and one by a candidate of any gender, the party decided to hold one vote to decide who took the final two slots.

The choice of Hogg for this role was a mistake. Members of the DNC were probably motivated by the idea of empowering a young person, considering the party’s recent issues with this voter group but Hogg was simply not qualified.

Hogg is an activist with no experience in running political campaigns or knowledge of how to get people elected to office.

The entire affair is just another reminder of how lost the Democratic party is right now.
