Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly Passes Away at 75

Connolly had cancer of the esophagus.

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), 75, passed away on Wednesday morning. (I accidentally put R instead of D. Sorry!!)

From CBS News:

“It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family,” Connolly’s family announced in a statement.

Connolly, a Democrat, has represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, which covers parts of the region outside of Washington, D.C., since 2009. He announced in November that he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and would be undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

On April 28, Connolly announced he would not seek reelection in 2026 due to his cancer returning.

Doctors diagnosed Connolly with cancer of the esophagus in November.

“We were fortunate to share Gerry with Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years because that was his joy, his purpose, and his passion,” his family added. “His absence will leave a hole in our hearts, but we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations. We thank you for your love of Gerry, and know he loved you all so much.”

How is #fuckcancer make him a fan? I use it all the time since cancer killed my wife.

Because the phrase literally reads sexual relations with cancer?

And that’s leaving aside that the term is obscene and not used in polite company!

This is Liberty Hall; you can spit on the mat and call the cat a bastard.

The term ‘moron’ is not used in ‘polite company’ either, but this is a forum for grown-ups. The phrase ‘fuck’ cancer has nothing to do with sexual relations. As the Supreme Court opined in “Cohen v. California,” the use of the term ‘fuck’, as in ‘Fuck the Draft,’ does not constitute obscene speech pursuant to tests for obscenity, later distilled in “Miller,” which require that speech be related to ‘sexual conduct,’ and not merely offensive. The use of the term here is not sexual but derisive similar to “to hell with.” To say “To hell with cancer” is a both an appropriate and understandable response to a condition that seems an unfair assault on human well-being by many afflicted with it.

This piece says Rep. Gerry Connolly (R-VA). Shouldn’t that be (D-VA)?

I’m unsure why I should bother to read about or care about this.

“Rep. Gerry Connolly (R-VA)”

Proofreading is your friend. LI should try it sometime.

He had cancer of the soul long before that.

Well, now he’s a good communist.

He should have resigned as should every other politician on the cusp of death, Dying in office unless accidental is the height of hubris and disrespectful to your constituents.

This goes for both Democrats and Republicans and those in between. Kay Granger was living full time in assisted living while in congress. Presumably she got paid during that time. I wonder if she registered any votes?

Milhouse in reply to ztakddot. | May 22, 2025 at 12:07 am

Why should he have resigned? So long as he was still capable of representing his constituents, why should he not have continued doing so? How would they benefit by his resignation?

When my late uncle was diagnosed he started working from home, and kept working for as long as he was able. Another uncle was still working from his hospital bed, just a week before he went. Work is important to people.

As for Granger, there was an election coming up, so there wouldn’t have been time for a special election. If she’d resigned the seat would just have remained empty until the election. And no, she didn’t register any votes while she was at the home, because under Republicans the House doesn’t allow proxy votes.

Why? All faithful democrats cling to power till their last dying breath. Holding power is the meaning of their life.

Cancer is cannibalistic – who knew?

I’m sad. It happened so quickly.
I’m sad it happened so quickly.
I think that sums up the country’s sentiment.

The housed passed the budget last night, aka the big beautiful bill 215-214 meaning if Connolly is still breathing that bill does not pass.
