Trump Delays EU Tariffs Until July 9
The tariffs would have gone into effect on June 1.
President Donald Trump delayed slapping 50% tariffs on the European Union after a talk with European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen:
I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union. I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so. The Commission President said that talks will begin rapidly. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Good call with @POTUS.
The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship.
Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.
To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.

Last week, Trump threatened the June 1 tariffs after trade talks stalled.
“Their powerful Trade Barriers, Vat Taxes, ridiculous Corporate Penalties, Non-Monetary Trade Barriers, Monetary Manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against Americans Companies, and more, have led to a Trade Deficit with the U.S. of more than $250,000,000 a year, a number which is totally unacceptable,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on May 23. “Our discussions with them are going nowhere!”
European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic has plans to speak with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer today, according to CNBC.

Carrot and stick approach works well.

“Our discussions with them are going nowhere!”
Kinda like our discussions with Iran.
Kinda like our discussions with Russia.
Kinda like our discussions with hamas.
I’m beginning to see a pattern here and it isn’t good.
Does anyone have a blanket and binky for our friend here? I think he needs to self-soothe.
you’re correct
but going nowheres means its going somewheres
and if djt is true to his word(s)
then that somewheres will then include banking sanctions for starters
We’ll see. He’s got a lot of opposition with everything he does.
It’s clear at this point that the threat of punitive tariffs is the weapon that Trump is wielding to force countries to the bargaining table but I am curious to know what the U.S. is reliant upon the E.U. for? French wine and cheese? Overpriced German automobiles? Certainly not agricultural commodities in general since the E.U. is not self-reliant there.
I hope that the real reason Trump is playing hardball with the E.U. is to open *their* markets to American goods.
There are plants in the southern US that make German badged cars – Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and VW. It must be something else, like what you mentioned.
.
Opening up EU markets to US goods is the focus. The EU has a number of non tariff protectionist measures including a an outright ban on some US agricultural products, quota import limits on many other products. The EU is attempting to use a CA like approach to regulation on website/social media platforms seeking to ban platforms which run afoul of their speech codes. Getting them to stop that crap and get to an environment of free and fair trade in an open competition based on quality and price v gov’t putting their thumb on the scale to support domestic producers is the goal IMO.
if its sooooo important then hit them right now with it
they have about 4 + decades to prepare for this moment
Suddenly the EU wants to negotiate
The EU wants to negotiate but only on their terms not the terms that Trump has offered. But don’t worry, the EU now has an extra 30+ days to consider their response. And I know exactly what it will be. Too bad that Trump doesn’t have a clue.
The EU really does want a trade war?
We should start pulling our troops from Europe today, cut off trade.
Not worried. Trump is giving them rope to hang themselves. They don’t want the status quo to change but he can say he did his best to give them time.
