Report: IL Rep. Jan Schakowsky Will Retire After This Term

Considering how many longtime Democrats have announced their retirement, this is another story I suspect is true!

Politico discovered that longtime Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) will announce on May 5 that she will not seek reelection after this term.

Schakowsky has represented the 9th District, which includes part of Chicago and northern suburbs, for 14 terms.

No, it’s not because Shakowsky’s district has grown red. The 80-year-old faces a tough primary with 26-year-old influencer Kat Abughazaleh, who announced her run in March.

Abughazaleh hasn’t even lived in Illinois for a year but “received significantly more financial support in her campaign’s first week than Schakowsky did in the entire first quarter of 2025,” according to The Chicago Sun-Times.

Sheesh. Much of that money came from donors across the country, not Illinois.

Not that it matters. The district will stay blue.

Abughazaleh was born in Texas and raised a Republican. She became a leftist after…get this…attending George Washington University in D.C.

What. A. Shock!

Abughazaleh moved to the 5th Congressional District from New York less than a year ago, but will supposedly move to the 9th district in July.

It sounds like the youngin’ will be at home in leftist haven Chicago. She worked for Mother Jones, Zeteo News, and Media Matters. She gained a following on social media going after republicans and Fox News because that’s so totes original and rebellious.

Abughazaleh claims she has felt the pain of so many others since Media Matters laid her off a year ago.

Ok, so you have no money and you choose to live in one of the most expensive areas in the country? Smart move, bro.

Anyway, Schakowsky is pretty far left. Abughazaleh will likely be more leftist.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin said he won’t seek reelection in 2026. I bet a far-leftist replaces him, too.
