DHS to Fine Illegal Aliens $998 a Day Who Defy Deportation Orders

“Emails reviewed by Reuters show the White House has pressed U.S. Customs and Border Protection to handle the issue of penalties, property seizures for migrants who don’t pay, and the sale of their assets.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will enforce a 1996 law that fines illegal aliens $998 a day if they defy deportation orders.

President Donald Trump’s first administration enforced the law in 2018.

One source told Reuters that DHS “plans to apply the penalties retroactively for up to five years, which could result in fines of more than $1 million.”

From Reuters:

In response to questions from Reuters, U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that immigrants in the U.S. illegally should use a mobile app formerly known as CBP Onerebranded as CBP Home under Trump – to “self deport and leave the country now.”

“If they don’t, they will face the consequences,” McLaughlin said. “This includes a fine of $998 per day for every day that the illegal alien overstayed their final deportation order.”

DHS warned of the fines in a March 31 social media post.

Emails reviewed by Reuters show the White House has pressed U.S. Customs and Border Protection to handle the issue of penalties, property seizures for migrants who don’t pay, and the sale of their assets.

The Department of Justice’s civil asset forfeiture division could be another option for the seizures, one email said.

Around 1.4 million illegal aliens have deportation orders.

Interesting idea, but honestly they will never pay. So unless you want to count that debt as a way to keep them out once they’re out I don’t know what purpose it serves.

Asset forfeiture, as mentioned in the article. Take their stuff as we round them up.

Some of them bought property assuming it was all safe and they were kings here. Oops. We have a housing crisis, and making their houses available will help. They should hurry, sell and leave and they can keep the proceeds.

Au contraire; Junior; the cartel boys and gang members have plenty. Lots of illegals drive nice cars and even own homes.

Are you stating that none of the 25 million ish illegal Aliens in the USA don’t have any individual assets? That they don’t have joint assets with family members? That they don’t have any way to support themselves? Seize their car, their furniture, all their stuff and sell it to goodwill applying the proceeds to the fine. More importantly get a judgement against them and when/if they try to come.back there’s another basis for denying entry.

Our state is full of illegals driving new pickups and living in houses they bought working for cash under the table. You know not of which you speak.

If they own homes or cars, they will pay. They will also be ineligible for a visa in the future unless it’s paid off.

Does this include stopping welfare checks and shutting off Obamaphones?

Can the NGO’s that brought them in be held accountable for their debt?

Based on the US Catholic Bishops cutting bait and shutting down their immigration support operations now that DOGE got a hold of the books and Trump cut off access to Fed trough or in their PR release ‘we can’t continue operations on our own’. IOW they’re not feeling charitable enough to use their own funding to continue.

It’s interesting that Biden ‘rescinded’ the prior application of this fine. It’s always been my understanding that the power of pardon/clemency only applies to matters of criminal law. Presidents can’t (legally) waive civil law or forgive financial penalties levied for violating those civil laws. Deportation is, of course, a civil matter which is why Biden couldn’t grant amnesty by Executive Order. If he could have he sure would have.

This insane. They’re getting Medicaid for god’s sake. Just kick out every illegal alien criminal (but I repeat myself but you know what I mean), and every illegal alien on public welfare of any type. It wasn’t that long ago you couldn’t even get into this country unless you had a sponsor willing to be financially responsible for you. We should go back to the kind of system but allow the sponsor to be a company, a NGO, a church, etc… and not always a relative.

Nope. The NGOs and companies will file bankruptcy, change their name, create a new company, and walk away from the deal.

Only an American Citizen relative should be a sponsor. The companies can be Visa sponsors, but have to notify the Visa holder that they have 30 days to leave the country try if the company shutters. A company has to guarantee a salary to anyone they sponsor.

In which case you deport the sponsored party. That abuse will stop soon enough.

We.should require an individual US Citizen as the sponsor for each Alien desiring lawful entry. That sponsor should have to post $100K bond to ensure the Alien reports in, stays where they are supposed to, doesn’t commit a crime.. The sponsor should be liable for any civil claims based on the the actions of the Alien (not covered by the bond). No one who has federal debt (including student loans) or civil judgements outstanding can be a sponsor.

If the Alien doesn’t abide by the terms of admission then send the bondsman after them. If he causes damage to property or injuries another or racks up a parking ticket the sponsor is liable and if they can’t or won’t pay up seize their stuff, sell it off, start taking portions of their income until it’s paid off.

Beside the 1324D fine, begin some percentage of taxation on the remittances.
Reduce the amount of money the US is providing to the home countries by the amounts their countryman owes in fines…

I think it’d be easier and more effective to punish businesses with daily fines for each illegal alien they employ.

Federal govt already has the jackboot of tyranny firmly on the throat of every business in the country, and access to their payroll information because they tax all the employees before they even get to see their pay.

The bureaucracy is already set up for this, and they’re really good at forcing compliance.

If you want to encourage self deportation at scale, then make it really difficult for businesses to continue to employ illegal aliens without getting crushed by penalties.
