What a joke.
A French judge found National Rally leader Marine Le Pen guilty of embezzlement of public funds and banned her from running in the next election.
The judge also sentenced her to four years in prison, with two years suspended:
According to the court, the politicians set up a system between 2004 and 2016 to funnel €2.9 million from the EP to the headquarters of the RN in Paris.Le Pen has been “at the heart of this system since 2009”, according to President Bénédicte de Perthuis. The court stressed that “no one was judged for having done politics”, but that it was about a “system” of embezzlement of public funds.
Le Pen cannot run for an election for five years, making her ineligible for the 2027 election.
The prosecutors insisted the election ban start immediately, and the court complied. However, she can keep her parliamentary seat.
Le Pen will appeal the jail sentence, so she does not have to comply with that yet.
I do not believe in coincidences. Beege Welborn at Hot Air pointed out a significant detail that had been published a day before the court’s decision. From REMIX:
Marine Le Pen stands poised to win the 2027 presidential election in France unless the courts disqualify her from running, new polling published just hours before a court hearing to determine her future has shown. On Sunday, a new Ifop survey for Le Journal du Dimanche showed Le Pen leading in every run-off scenario, making her the undeniable frontrunner and obvious candidate of the right-wing National Rally.
Yeah, the poll showed her winning “between 34 percent and 37 percent of first-round voting intentions, beating all likely centrist and left-wing candidates.”
