The saga of the Los Angeles Times ideological makeover continues with a new chapter.
Legal Insurrection readers may recall that some of the editors at the Los Angeles Times resigned after its owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, would not allow the newspaper to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for president. Subsequently, Soon-Shiong has decided to attempt to restore some semblance of journalistic credibility with his publication, as he revealed the newspaper will soon have a new editorial board.
In today’s installment, Scott Jennings, the unflappable conservative commentator and CNN contributor, has now joined the Los Angeles Times editorial board at Soon-Shiong’s invitation.
Jennings, who often sparks outrage from liberal CNN viewers, praised L.A. Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong on X for his “important and groundbreaking” mission.”It’s true – I’ve accepted @DrPatSoonShiong invitation to join the editorial board of the @latimes,” Jennings wrote on X.”I’ve written columns for the paper over the last few years and was honored to do so under such a storied and important masthead. I love newspapers and believe in strong journalism and strong opinion pages that represent a wide array of views. I approach my commentary jobs by starting with the truth and then providing my honest opinion based on my conservative values and experience. I think Dr Soon-Shiong is doing something important and groundbreaking and am honored he asked me to play a role in that,” he continued.
Jennings, a contributing columnist for the Los Angeles Times since 2019, has had a number of fun moments recently ridiculing the legacy media. Or rather, Jennings allows his progressive colleagues to beclown themselves while he maintains a serene, professional demeanor.
Personally, I don’t watch CNN. However, clips featuring Jennings have been pure comedy gold. My favorite moment was when Jennings described X as the “most ideologically balanced user platform.”
This statement caused an uproar among other panelists, particularly Cari Champion, who vehemently disagreed with Jennings’ assertion. However, Jennings brought the receipts….from CNN’s own analysis.
Champion could not abide by the statement, telling him to stop. Scott jabbed at her in response, saying, “You’re going to be embarrassed when I tweet it out after the show.”The Prime Video pundit demanded to know who Jennings’ source for that survey was, to which he replied, “We’ve reported it on this network.””It’s not accurate, and you know it,” Champion declared. However, CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten recently broke down Pew Research numbers revealing that X has become much more ideologically balanced, even in terms of who uses the platform. He revealed how in 2024, 48 percent of identified Democratic voters use X, while 47 percent of Republicans use it, which he claimed is much more representative of the voting split in the U.S. In 2022, 65 percent of regular users were Democratic voters and only 31 percent were GOP voters.
Jennings had a few thoughts about Biden’s pardon of his son as well.
Some other golden moments involving Jennings include:
While these reports seem promising, I would be remiss if I did not also point out that Jennings served key roles in both of President George W. Bush’s campaigns before becoming Special Assistant to the President in 2005 and working for strategist Karl Rove. He has also held senior campaign positions for former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
It will be interesting to see if the Los Angeles Times‘s reporting balance improves over the next year. As California Gov. Gavin Newsom and our legislature gear up to “Trump-proof” the state, there will be a great need for honest, balanced reporting about what is occurring.
I hope Soon-Shiong’s gamble pays off.
