Democrats and Activists Urge Biden to Hand Out More Student Loan Forgiveness Before His Term Ends

“I’m urging the Biden administration in the closing hours of their administration – the last seven weeks – come to the rescue of these students as quickly as possible”

The left knows that the student loan debt ‘forgiveness’ gravy train is coming to an end when Biden leaves office, so they are urging him to up his game before the end of his presidency.

The United States Supreme Court has already told Biden that he can’t do this but no one on the left seems to care about that. Shocker.

FOX News reports:

Top Dems, activists call on Biden admin to dole out more student loan forgiveness before term ends

Top Democratic lawmakers and activists alike are calling on the Biden administration to ignore a federal injunction and continue wiping out student loan debt before the president leaves office.

Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Ed Markey, D-Mass, held a press conference alongside a cohort of activist groups on Wednesday from the nation’s capital, calling on the Department of Education to finish granting federal student loan forgiveness for borrowers it pledged to help. These borrowers attended either now-defunct or predatory for-profit colleges.

“I’m urging the Biden administration in the closing hours of their administration – the last seven weeks – come to the rescue of these students as quickly as possible,” Durbin said Monday from the Senate floor…

On Wednesday, Durbin and Markey will be joined by groups like PPSL to continue urging the Biden administration to maximize student debt relief. The calls come even though the program, known as the “borrower defense loan discharge program,” remains tied up in litigation after a federal court issued an injunction last year.

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) chairs the House Education Committee and is fighting back on this.

The New York Post reports:

House education chair demands Biden admin nix ‘blatantly illegal’ latest student loan scheme

House Education Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx is ripping the outgoing Biden administration’s latest proposed student loan forgiveness scheme as “blatantly illegal” and demanding the federal Department of Education nix it.

Just before last month’s election, the Department of Education announced it was launching yet another attempt to get through President Biden’s hotly controversial plan despite numerous court slap-downs in the past.

The latest machination would again offer to broadly wipe out student loans based on hardship, including those thought to have an “80% chance of being in default within the next two years.”

“This fourth scheme is just as legally dubious as the prior Biden-Harris administration attempts to ‘cancel’ student loan borrowers’ debts, but have the American taxpayer pick up the tab,” Foxx wrote to DOE Secretary Miguel Cardona in a Monday letter exclusively obtained by The Post.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is also fighting Biden on this.

Taxpayers, many of whom did not go to college or paid off their student loans, should not be on the hook for the student loan debt of other people. How many times must this be explained?

Burn as much down as possible before evacuating ….. Sad.

I didn’t know there was any forgiveness left. I thought it all went to Hunter Biden. He was forgiven of more crimes than all the prisoners in Ft Leavenworth put together times two.

Joe Biden entered office a habitual criminal and will leave office more so.

Sore losers today, miserable pariahs after Jan 20.

you can only piss people off so much
before that bear turns an mauls you.

1st pardons, now senile joe is setting stage to – once again – defy scotus opinions.

Are sure you want thems to be the rules now, joe?

Why not just give everyone a new car like Oprah did

I thought the Democrats believed in the rule of law? But now they’re willing to defy a Supreme Court opinion on the lack of authority for the student loan giveaway?

No, they’re not defying anything. They’re pushing the envelope but no court has ever heard arguments, let alone ruled, on the statutory interpretations they’re relying on.

Traitor Joe could just follow his pattern and order his people to destroy the records of the deadbeat borrowers and then pardon everyone who did that, including himself, of course. Though we know that he’s going to cap everything off with a pardon of himself (which is absolutely ridiculous and the only people who think such a thing is real and legal are the same ones who thinks there’s nothing abnormal about negative interest rates) for everything, at the end, anyway.

Funny when Trump was exc the exec had no money now Dictator Biteme has the purse strings.

These poor debtors have had a terrible time. Most of them have owed money for years which caused anxiety and other psychological problems. Biden should forgive all their debt (both to the government and to others like credit card companies. Plus the USvshould chip in $50 or 100 K to thank them for getting a college degree.

What is really concerning is that I heard that there may be an agreement between the government and the federal employees union to modify their contract to allow government employees to work from home through 2029.

Pure theater

Has any of slow Joe’s “forgiveness” been paid, or is it still reversible?

Milhouse in reply to MTED. | December 5, 2024 at 7:09 pm

“Paid?!” What does that mean, in this context? There’s no payment involved. On the contrary, forgiving a loan means there are no more payments. It’s wiped off the books, marked “paid in full” without any money changing hands.

The United States Supreme Court has already told Biden that he can’t do this

No, it didn’t, and no matter how many times people say it did, it will remain false. It’s exactly the same as when Dems keep saying over and over that the Jan-6-2021 incident was an “insurrection”. It will remain false no matter how many times they say it, and the same is true here.

The Supreme Court never told Biden he couldn’t forgive student loans, and it can’t tell him that. No court can. Courts can only rule on the cases brought before them, and SCOTUS ruled only on a specific question of the interpretation of one clause in one statute.

It said that clause doesn’t mean what Biden’s lawyers argued it meant, and he immediately complied with the ruling and stopped relying on that mistaken interpretation. The decision has no relevance to any program or proposal that doesn’t rely on that interpretation of that clause in that statute.

He was completely correct to have his lawyers comb through other statutes to see if they can find provisions that would allow him to achieve his goals. That’s exactly what Trump did when the courts struck down his original so-called “Moslem ban”; he went back to the drawing board and came up with a new measure that didn’t have the flaws the courts identified in the original one. And when that was struck down too he did it again. As was right and proper, because that’s how law works.

The real problem here isn’t that SCOTUS told him not to forgive any loans. It didn’t. The real problem here is that he’s already forgiving all the loans his lawyers tell him he can. Until they find yet another statute that can be argued to allow more forgiveness he can’t do more than he’s already doing. That’s why the decision striking down the original program is still important; all the statutes he’s found, put together, still don’t add up to those covered by his original attempt that was struck down.

I am getting sick of nobody explaining why doctors, engineers, lawyers, zoologists, chemists, physicists etc should have a loan they willingly took pardoned.

Families are spending 18 years saving money and being responsible to set the next generation up with a path to the most desired professions in the world.

It isn’t just the money it is all of the things those families did not do because they decided to be responsible and save for college.

Furthermore why the loan bubble at all?

What capitalist serving as president of a University WOULDN’T raise the prices to absurd levels knowing that the U.S. Federal government will make sure the price is paid?

College used to be easily paid for by cleaning tables at restaurants and there really isn’t a good reason that shouldn’t be so today.

Milhouse in reply to Danny. | December 5, 2024 at 9:59 pm

It’s because of all those people with useless degrees, or whose degrees didn’t prove as useful for them as they’d expected, and are not earning enough to pay their own debts, so they’d rather not pay them. And offering them forgiveness can induce them to vote Democrat. That’s the motive, regardless of what they say.

The question is whether there’s a legal way for the Democrats to do it. Biden thought he’d found a perfect one that would let him cancel huge amounts in debt, but SCOTUS said “you’re misreading the statute, try again.” So he did, and has done more limited forgiveness programs, but he still hasn’t found anything that would allow him to do as many as his original plan would have. And some of the new ways he’s found are also under challenge, and might end up being stricken down, but they haven’t been yet.

Why, so a Federal Judge can throw it out like the last two times? That’s hysterical.

Or not. There’s no reason to believe that the statutory interpretations these actions rely on are in error, or will be found in error by a court. The previous decision on different interpretations of different clauses in different statutes have absolutely no bearing on these ones.

Maybe some of this taxpayer money these democrats are spending should come directly out of their paychecks.

“These borrowers attended either now-defunct or predatory for-profit colleges.”

That’s only a tiny subset of the ex students who are hoping for loan forgiveness.

Why isn’t the Justice Department going after those colleges for repayment of the loans, not the taxpayers?

I’m not against helping out some of those people that really did get taken advantage of (even if it was their own fault). Rather than just wipe all this debt off the books, it seems like the interest rate could be lowered, even to as low as zero. Then come up with some other incentive to encourage paying it back other than just the ballooning interest payments.
