Trump has a point. Harris refused to do a Fox News debate.
Trump previously said he would be open to a third debate on Fox but not with Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier as moderators.
Polls showed people thought Harris won the debate but more on decorum than substance.
Fox News conducted a focus group during the debate with seven Democrats, five Republicans, and five independents.
The independents aligned closely with the Republicans when Trump spoke about immigration:
An independent voter from New York who joined a voter panel Wednesday told host Harris Faulkner, “You don’t have to look any further than the five boroughs to see the impact of the migrant crisis.”
“When asked directly by the moderators, Kamala didn’t even make an effort to defend the administration’s policies at all. She can’t,” he added. “It’s indefensible, so she pivoted… but they totally rewrote all of Trump’s immigration policies year one. I would’ve liked to have seen an explanation for the country as to why they did that.”
The latest PBS/NPR/Marist poll shows that after the debate Harris only leads Trump by 1 point.
Trump leads Harris with independents, 49% to 46%.

At least this means there is more time to fix his campaign, improve ground game, improve get out the vote, and get campaign adds into the internet so it actually could be greatly to our advantage. For example if someone who would be doing surveys of prior tweets by Kamala is asked to survey the people the president has around him to make sure they are people with Trump’s interests in mind it would mean Laura Loomer being fired yesterday which would be a favor for everyone who wants us to win.
Lets also hope that whoever is helping J.D. Vance prepare is a different team from the presidential debate.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) argued former President Donald Trump was able to keep the United States safe from its enemies, recounting his “favorite” story of Trump when he negotiated with Taliban leaders.
Hunt explained how Trump wanted “a conditions-based withdrawal” of U.S. troops from Afghanistan when he and then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were negotiating with Taliban leaders. During these negotiations, Trump told Taliban leaders that he would kill them “if you harm a hair on a single American,” prompting the translator present with them to appear stunned.
“And Trump goes, ‘Tell him. Just tell him what I said!’” Hunt said on The Sage Steele Show. “Reached into his pocket, pulled out a satellite photo of the leader of the Taliban’s home, and handed it to him, got up, and walked out the room.”
Hunt then noted how no U.S. residents died in Afghanistan for 18 months during Trump’s presidency, calling this “the definition of strength.” He argued that the country is under “feckless leadership” with President Joe Biden.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), who was also a part of the interview, explained how seven U.S. embassies have been lost under Biden’s leadership, which he said has “never happened” in U.S. history. He contended that this is because the adversaries of the U.S. are aware of the country’s “weak” leadership and are taking advantage of this.
It was both. It didn’t help that he was debating 3 different people, only one of them being the candidate.

I could see the results. I could see if he does everything Kamala tried to make him do. I could see if he doesn’t know when to just say yes. I could see when he decides to defend the Afghanistan deal he prepared instead of pointing to Kamala’s results turning a major Kamala weakness into his weakness.
Furthermore this happened before. His first debate with Biden was a disaster. His second debate was when he crushed him in 2020. It was unfortunately late and didn’t save him but I really wanted prepared Trump and instead got unprepared Trump.
You could tell if someone has actually prepared by how well they do. If they are being controlled by their opponent and taking bait to waist their time chances are they are unprepared.
Again prepared Trump is good at debates. Unprepared Trump has a history of losing debates.

But now that he has met his match, he cowers in the corner. Trump refused to debate any of his Republican primary opponents, and now he refuses to debate Harris a second time. Whether it is right or wrong, Independents and Undecideds will see this as cowardice. Another big unforced error on Trump’s part.

I have mixed feelings about this decision. On the one hand, Trump is a horrible debater, but on the other hand, he knows what to expect (and should have before the debate), so he should be able to perform better in a second debate. There is so much wrong with Que Mala that I sill can’t fully believe how bad the first (only?) debate was. So then we roll back to him being horrible at debates. Maybe this is best.
I just wish he could handle debates better. Back in the day, as a young and disconnected voter, I didn’t follow much in terms of politics or news, but I did watch the debates. And they did sway me because I didn’t pay attention to the news (this was decades before social media, though), so that was all I saw with regards to candidates for president/VP.
The first debate I remember watching was Reagan v. Carter. I was too young to vote, but I remember understanding that Reagan was going to win. Prior to the debate, I hadn’t paid attention to anything (I was still a kid, too young even to drive), but I got that Reagan was strength and courage while Carter was weak and afraid.
Debates aren’t for us, for the people who follow politics and know what the issues are, they are for those who don’t pay attention but may tune in to a debate to get a feel for the candidates.
Early voting has already started, and this whole thing is just worrying. I want Trump to win more this year than I did even in 2016. A good debate could help, but maybe his team is just acknowledging that Trump is not a good debater? Sigh.

Trump didn’t take any bait during the debate and didn’t lose his cool, at all. Trump was cool and even the entire time. He calmly addressed some points she tried to make but that was it.
Did he repeat some things too much. Yes, but he always does that. That’s part of his style and always has been. It’s a nothing burger.
Trump did fine at the debate. He made enough substantial points and he got overwrought emotional responses from Komrade Kamala and the propaganda pieces running the show. And, as people investigate their incredulous responses and find out that Trump was actually speaking the truth it will turn the reaction to the debate even more – which was never against Trump from the start.
Trump got the twerp DeWine in Ohio to finally start doing something … about an issue that Komrade Kamala and the propaganda mouthpieces at the debate vigorously denied and laughed about. That’s a real effect of Trump’s debating and it’s one that people see and understand.

For those listening to the Nixon-Kennedy debate, Nixon won…. When watched with the intentionally altered lighting for Nixon to enhance Kennedy… Kennedy won. Yes…. same games earlier generations… nothing changes. It is hard to debate when lies are allowed to stand and given cover. ABC..NBC..CBS..NPR have all played the game year in and year out. There are ringers at Fox. The only question is how much would they lie and deceive before they are forced to do the same? Rush felt that the media drove the Party. Once the Party controls everything then that will reverse.
This is an inept comparison. People hearing the debate between Trump and Que Mala would think she won (and she did) because they didn’t see her cringe facial expressions and body language. On Kennedy vs Nixon, that trope appears to have been derived from their VP running mates. I have not found a poll that distinguished between tv and radio voters.
If she had spent more time actually telling the truth and actually answering the questions instead of recycling Biden’s bald faced lies and providing flowery attempts to unburden herself of the past, I might be convinced that she approached a “win.”
But as you note, she was acting like a child and focused on remembering her rehearsed attack lines. The whole “he’s gonna tell a bunch of lies” should have been warning enough, but when it was reinforced by the service animal moderators, I knew the fix was in. My wife was watching, and she was thoroughly PO’ed with all the lies by Harris. She’s still swearing.
I think, once the fake enthusiasm dies down, the grim realization that Harris effectively said nothing of importance or information will sink in, and people will rethink their initial feelings about this.
Is Pres. Trump as smooth as Vance? Not by a long shot, but they have thrown everything, including the kitchen sink at him, repeatedly, even tried to assassinate him, and he rises above the fray.

1. There was no altered lighting. Nixon refused makeup, and then started sweating under the normal studio lights.
2. There is very little basis for the common belief that Nixon won with the radio audience but lost with the TV audience. That idea comes from a single survey with a flawed methodology.
He handles debates fine. No one would have done any better the way the “debate” was handled.
Debates are much less important than back in the day because there is too much else going on. An assassination attempt is of greater significance, but it is gone from public memory.
Harris was acknowledged as a terrible Veep for a reason. She will have plenty of opportunity to show her true self, and it will be up to voters to pierce the veil over her authenticity.

I think that social media makes disconnected voters more aware of what is going on, but the other side of that is that most social media outlets are in the hip pocket of the Intel-Dem cabal. That is what failure to prepare means. It means you turn what should be a great strength into a weakness. Kamala opened herself up to total destruction in a way the moderators could not have defended her and Trump passed it up to defend the idea his deal with the Taliban was a wonderful one.
The night was full of examples of exactly that.
When Kamala attacked his crowd sizes and said the people who attend his rallies leave quickly he should have parried by talking about inflation, or energy, or maternity leave, or illegal immigration, or drugs, or well anything of actual importance to Americans nobody gives a dam about his crowd sizes.
When Kamala wants Trump to do something there is a reason.
Debating the moderators didn’t help but it also didn’t help that he did no debate prep.

“Mr. President does that mean you want Putin to lose the war in Ukraine”-The correct answer is yes. You don’t have to always fight no matter how angry you are.
3 vs 1 debates are tough for anyone. If you prepare for a debate they are winnable.

I agree with much of what you wrote, but he did get his digs in, particularly with his closing statement, which basically concluded that if she had all these “great ideas and plans,” (mostly cut and pasted from Biden’s pathetic game plan and/or stolen from Pres. Trump), WHERE HAS SHE BEEN FOR THE PAST 3.5 YEARS?
I think that simple message, tying her to the failed Biden actions and reminding people that she is very nearly the president as we speak, given Biden’s vegetative state, would erase any boost she got from her dramatic, but empty, performance.
Additionally, with a Vance-Walz debate being the conclusion of the “debate season,” a good performance by Vance will go a long way to remediating any perceive flaws in Pres. Trump’s debate performance.
Bottom line, if you value substance over style, it’s Trump/Vance. If you like platitudes and “free” stuff, a prelude to the Venezuelization of the U.S., then it’s Harris/Walz.
Debating by keyboard is fun, especially after the fact. Your obsession is sad. Your expertise is debatable, and your assertion that “preparation” is all that matters is fantasy. You made your point and the need to keep making it is like Harris wanting another debate.
Trump is a good debater enough. He’s had how many years on the national stage? How many did you have? With millions of people looking at you? Yeah, thought so.
What he should have done was request one hosted by Bret Baier (a conservative but professional and competent journalist with a history of fairness in interviews) who the people would respect and would not see as Trump cowering behind a champion for requesting.
Instead he made having one of his partisans (Sean Hannity) as condition for a Fox Debate followed by forfeiting.
The reason I say this is because the Trump you saw last night is unprepared Trump. You may remember that Trump from first debate against Biden (trade mark of losing in seconds to the term “oh will you shut up”).
However prepared Trump is competent at debates and could win when there is a neutral moderator (the debates after the first one unfortunately did not make up the lost ground of the first debate in 2020 but they did help a great deal because competent Trump showed up).
If Kamala had refused a debate on neutral terrain the public would have punished her. Instead Trump added limping away to failed first debate.
Debate prep is annoying, it means acknowledging all of the flaws you have, it means work nobody will ever see that could be for naught, it means uncomfortably seeing how you look to everyone else, it means confronting everything you are unsure about, it means being constantly reminded you aren’t good enough and there is so much more frustrating about preparing for a debate.
I think Trump owed that to us for being our nominee, and he owed at least trying to get a fair debate involving himself doing that to try and stem the bleeding.
Of course I also think he owes us a competent campaign that for example does not include Laura Loomer trying to encourage Asians to vote Democrat but that is just me.
I desperately want Trump to win which is why the debate was a nightmare for me, but to be fair prepared Trump actually is good at debates. Unfortunately we got a rerun of unprepared Trump.

I read someone’s tweet today which said “Trump should have known what was coming; all debates are the same topics.” True enough, but in the same vein, Harris’ handlers should also have known that, and prepared her with plausible, maybe even believable, answers.

It seems that there are no snapshots or soundbites (to borrow Dan Bongino’s metric) in favor of Kamala, as her supporters fear that anything they put out on x will be immediately debunked. She delivered evasion, word salads, and lies some of which even leftist “fact checkers” like snopes have called out.
Trump made her run away from her abortion up to and after birth position. I cannot remember anyone on the Republican ticket that managed that (and to think some professional pro-life-activists attacking Trump for not being pro-life enough, because we do not need to walk back decades but can just teleport to the finish line, right?) Kamala’s abc-surrogates even denied that is happening or her position, and now they get fact-checked, and the avortion extremism of the Dems is on display.
Trump brought it back to immigration and/or the economy almost always, and his closing was on point. It gets shared and is simply true: “She could do it now, but doesn’t. Ask yourself why that is.”
Another debate would be fun, if it were hosted on x, or on a network without strong left bias, but Harris’s handlers would never allow her to go into a non-pandering environment.

I am alarmed because I do not think the pollsters are activists, I think giving bad polls to try and rig an election cycle means you are in a firm that will be out of business because it forfeits the public trust. Therefore I think we are losing right now and am alarmed that the debate did not give us an advantage, and we furthermore can’t afford to lose more ground or not to take advantage of an opportunity to gain ground.

I voted for him, after backing someone else in the primary once the primary was over contributed to him, and plan on voting for him again November. Anyone not utterly insane would consider that a Trump supporter.
Independents do not agree with you nor do the overall polls which showed no movement for Harris. The “post debate bump” did not happen except for the Independents who broke decisively for Trump. More in depth polling this weekend with give us a fuller picture
I think that Trump is just sucking Komrade Kamala in for a debate or town hall in a pretty unbiased setting – which would completely sink the Komrade. Like others here, I was deflated after watching the debate… at first. I had been texting with my direct supervisor throughout the debate. She’s not especially political and she saw right through Kommie-la. We here know the facts that could have, in our opinion, sealed the deal. We are looking at it through our own eyes. The evidence seems to support that he didn’t damage himself with independents. Look at the crap the moderators threw: 2025, Jan 6, 2020 election, racism, and more. No matter how he reacted, it wouldn’t have mattered. The point is that Kommie was supposed to define herself. No one learned a thing about her plan except for a couple of freebies.
