Kamala Harris spoke at a rally in Detroit, MI, on Labor Day with another fake accent.
I couldn’t listen to the whole thing because I didn’t want my ears to bleed.
But it’s not just the accent. A few hours later, she gave the exact same speech in Pittsburgh.

Next we’ll have Walz bragging about how he’s “down with my homies” or some such.
The first of those who who blurts out the word “m———-r” wins a prize.
Walz’s team released a statement noting that he and his wife reverentially pour a “40” of malt liquor on the ground as an annual act of remembrance of the deaths of “gentle giant” Michael Brown, and, St. Trayvon of the Blessed Skittles.
“In order to pay tribute to these fallen American heroes, Gwen and I pour one for my dear departed homies,” Walz is quoted as saying.
Oh, now… that is barf-inducing.
They throw skittles first and then pour the malt liquor. The result is it looks like barf and if you look at it too long you can’t breathe.
It’s called code-switching, going into the patois of your audience, and it’s considered polite and most people do it unconsciously. Kamala’s problem is that she’s no good at accents, leaving everybody wondering “What the F is that?”
Adopting a fake accent to address an audience is more commonly and fairly characterized as “pandering,” in a political context, and, it isn’t an act of politeness — it’s an act of obsequious and greasy inauthenticity, deceit and contempt for the audience.
A politician who truly respects the audience doesn’t feel the need to present an inauthentic version of himself/herself, in order to address it.
Except for three years in Nevada I have resided in Tennessee and Alabama since 2005. I have NOT made any effort to sound local. I have noticed that in a FEW words I am starting to sound southern, but am not making a conscious effort to do so.
An example is the pronunciation of “four”. As a Californian, I’d pronounce it with one syllable. Now, I find I am drifting into “fow-uhr”.
The test of how tired I am is how “There’s a tire fire far over there” comes out. Tired enough and I’m sliding all the way back to my Texas roots: “Thar’s a tar far far o’er thar.”
I’ve had people ask me where I’m from, and they’re usually surprised when I say I’m from Louisiana.
New Yorkers, especially. I tell them, “The only difference between me and a New Yorker, is I say ‘y’all’. No, accents aren’t really a thing, aside from cajun, which is only prevalent in certain areas of the state, not state wide.

That’s true, I’ve noticed myself doing it. I think the key is when we do it unconsciously it’s genuine. When it’s planned it’s fake and obviously so. Politicians are fakers.

Yeah for sure. The thing is, with genuine code switching I find myself falling into the speech patterns of my listener, but not the accent. I noticed this on liberty in Australia and New Zealand.
As Mister Spock said in Star Trek IV, Harris is duplicating the sounds but not the language; she’s speaking in gibberish.
It’s not forced.
It comes naturally because she’s been drinking. The words just slide off her tongue and then she laughs at herself because she’s high as a kite.
And, to some extent it depends on your immersion and your facility with language. I noticed on a French Club trip to Europe that after 3 days in London we were all speaking with a mild English accent. Even among ourselves on the bus after crossing the Channel.
And if Harris had been in that situation, I might believe it. But I doubt she was surrounded by 100 Baptist preachers for the 72 hours prior to that speech. (And, then, of course, it disappeared in Pittsburgh.)

One of my NPCs in a rpg game I played with my friends had a Scottish accent. I had to work on it to make it sound authentic.
Now, when I get upset, I seamlessly segue-way into it. It’s reflex now.
I tell my wife, “You got me so upset I turned Scottish!”
So if I’m in a crowd of black people, they will consider me polite if I lapse into some sort of inner city dialect?
Even sooner, if you use the N-word liberally with them.

I would believe that when JD Vance goes home and talks with his relative he might fall into the vernacular and accent of his upbringing. That would be authentic. But to do it when that is not a real part of you. To pretend and pander is just lying.
Blacks aren’t stupid for their grammar. Black English is as rule-based as standard English, and is more complex in verb moods in fact. A non-native speaker trying to fake black English will be found out instantly.
Although not southern by birth I can hear most fake southern accents. The one adopted by the girlfriend of the title character on the radio show “The Great Gildersleeve” is so cringe-making I have to tune away.

Kids learn language by learning to disassemble and reassemble cliches. If they hear black English, they repeat the embedded rules by repeating the cliches. It’s not like there’s a formal rule-learning session. The cliches have pretty complicated rules.
Everybody else has learned off of the same cliches so follows the same rules. If you’re an imposter, you haven’t picked up all the rules and import some foreign rules, and so you’re found out.
In other words, you do not know and therefore pretend to be an authority.

I am normally repulsed by hearing Bronco Bama’s voice any time it’s on, but especially so when he goes into the fake pandering accent that you described so well above.

I’m generally not one to care about accents after all people who are bilingual often have different accents for different people in their family and friendship groups. I’ve seen it in my own family. But with this lady everything is do pre planned and rehearsed as she is clearly an empty void, it’s is laughable. Yes they are trying to turn her into a mish mash of Obama And Hillary and can’t decide which one to emulate from one day to the next. So she has a hope Obama image with the Hillary forward tag. It should be obvious that emulating Hillary is stupid but hey her handlers still think that Hillary won in 2016.

I can see that an Indian or Jamaican accent in certain situations could be somewhat real although I doubt she actually spoke that way during her upbringing. Maybe when she was slinging fries at a Canadian McDonalds.

Where I come from if somebody tried talking in our local accent/ dialect, we wouldn’t think it’s polite. We would laugh at their antics, because they are making themselves a target for ridicule and derision. This may be the Democrats ideal for a ‘presidential’ candidate though – a figure of ridicule and derision. Brandon was before her, so it’s no different with her. Just more of the same old stuff.
