Virginia: New Sweet Briar College Policy Bars Transgender Students
“The Virginia women’s college made the change to comport with its founding documents, creating a stricter gender admissions policy than many of its peers”
Is sanity making a comeback?
In a move that has upset students, alumnae and faculty, Sweet Briar College announced earlier this month that it was changing its admissions policy and will no longer accept transgender applicants.
The small women’s college in rural Virginia has never had an admissions policy specifically for transgender students but has evaluated and admitted trans applicants on a case-by-case basis. The new policy holds that an applicant must confirm “that her sex assigned at birth is female and that she consistently lives and identifies as a woman,” according to Sweet Briar’s website.
Officials said they made the move to comply with recent changes to the Common Application, used by more than 1,000 higher ed institutions, which now lists four legal gender options. That change, Sweet Briar’s leaders said in a message to the campus community, “presents a challenge both for students applying for admission and administrators and staff making admissions decisions.”

Can we stop using “gender” and just stick with Sex when setting policies? If they want to argue gender, just side-step it -policy should only care about “sex assigned at birth,” or a DNA determination of biological sex. You can call yourself whatever “gender” you want.
Yes! “Gender” properly applies to grammar and nothing else. “Gender identity” is a dishonest fiction cooks up by cultural Marxists to poison language and thinking.
Sweet Briar College as created for the “flowers of the South,” not plastic flowers.
It’s a good move for many reasons of course but it’s also a risky one.
SBC almost closed a few years back due to lack of enrollment and I don’t see that getting better any time soon. They seem to have principles, but if they get someone without they will be begging anyone to enroll with the coming demographic cliff.
Enrollment for the small colleges in the state just keep dropping like rock rolling down a hill.
If I was a parent of a college age female, I would prefer a school like SBC where my daughter would not be subjected to the trans crazy agenda.
If you had a college-age daughter, she may not agree with you (after years of public school indoctrination)…
you are one data point, though.
A good data point but just an n of 1 at the end of the day.
They almost closed in 2015. Things have changed dramatically at SBC, as far as I can tell, since that time.
They definitely got better, but I have a friend that left to work at another school.
All schools are in trouble in the coming wave of declining enrollment. Any school that was close to closing is becoming increasingly vulnerable.
I have a grand daughter going there now, who will be a Junior this Fall, and likes it. They have roughyly 450 students, and low costs. IMO a very small college providing a sane, traditional educaation might be less subject to demographic issues, if they can get the word out.
Enrollments drop because colleges have become purveyors of garbage. When they stick to principles, they get a very different result. Applications to Hillsdale College are through the roof, they can’t take but a small share of the applicants. Sweet Briar has taken a step in the right direction. Continue!
In this state in particular, the large colleges have been trying to make record enrollments at the expense of the smaller colleges. There’s no chancellor and Virginia system to provide checks and balances.
Also, the demographic cliff (look it up if you are interested) is coming for all colleges and that will hit hard. This is why the big colleges are pushing to enroll as many as possible to lessen the blow.
A welcome change (Mrs. Old Soldier is a SBC alum).
“no longer’
how come they did in the first place ???
what agenda /personnel has changed to make this not look like just another election year ploy
comply with recent changes to the Common Application, used by more than 1,000 higher ed institutions, which now lists four legal gender options
so they just go with the flow?
the whims of the moment?
WHILE REAL WOMEN ARE BEING TROUNCED UPON!!!!!!
