That was a very long time ago, I have a hard time believing things have been that pathetic for that long.
Well idk if the rescue attempt was sabatoged from within. But:
(1) it would not have been a difficult thing for a few phone calls to be made to let the Iranians know what was coming. The planning had been circulated for weeks-to-months.
(2) The US military had become low prestige by the mid-1970s. We had just left Vietnam. Military careers weren’t really in demand. It was not yet an allVolunteer force.
(3) The US had virtually zero experience in hostage rescue commando operations/logistics etc at that time.
(4) Jimmy Carter came into office in 1977 promising that he’d never get the US into war.
People today don’t really realize the sense of omnipotent power that America had about itself back then. Vietnam and Korea were stupidly perceived as barely significant little side shows—like a flat tire on a long road trip.
What Ho Chi Minh and Mao and Arafat understood is that you can bring America to its knees if you do it slowly , methodically , and so here we are.
