Hamas Leader Haniyeh Assassinated By Bomb Planted In Tehran Apartment Two Months Ago, Not By Missile – NYT Reports

“Such a breach, three Iranian officials said, was a catastrophic failure of intelligence and security for Iran and a tremendous embarrassment for the Guards, which uses the compound for retreats, secret meetings and housing prominent guests like Mr. Haniyeh.”

On July 31, 2024, Top Hamas Terrorist Leader Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Tehran.

The claim was that Israel targeted the guest apartment in which Haniyeh was staying with a long range missile fired from outside Iran’s borders. That never made a lot of sense. While Israel does have very precise missiles and stealth aircraft from which to fire them, it seemed implausible that the missile could travel hundreds of miles without being seen or heard and then strike a specific apartment. Not impossible, but strange if true.

There have been other rumors circulating on social media that it was a missile but fired from closer range.

The NY Times has just published an analysis and reporting, including by Ronen Bergman, an expert and well regarded author of a book about the Israeli intelligence services assassination efforts, Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel’s Targeted Assassinations.

So when Ronen Bergman writes on this topic, it’s worth taking seriously.

From the NY Times “scoop” today:

Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of Hamas, was assassinated on Wednesday by an explosive device covertly smuggled into the Tehran guesthouse where he was staying, according to seven Middle Eastern officials, including two Iranians, and an American official.

The bomb had been hidden approximately two months ago in the guesthouse, according to five of the Middle Eastern officials. The guesthouse is run and protected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and is part of a large compound, known as Neshat, in an upscale neighborhood of northern Tehran.

Mr. Haniyeh was in Iran’s capital for the presidential inauguration. The bomb was detonated remotely, the five officials said, once it was confirmed that he was inside his room at the guesthouse. The blast also killed a bodyguard.

The explosion shook the building, shattered some windows and caused the partial collapse of an exterior wall, according to the two Iranian officials, members of the Revolutionary Guards briefed on the incident. Such damage was also evident in a photograph of the building shared with The New York Times….

Such a breach, three Iranian officials said, was a catastrophic failure of intelligence and security for Iran and a tremendous embarrassment for the Guards, which uses the compound for retreats, secret meetings and housing prominent guests like Mr. Haniyeh.

How the bomb was stashed in the guesthouse remained unclear. The Middle Eastern officials said that the planning for the assassination took months and required extensive surveillance of the compound. The two Iranian officials who described the nature of the assassination said they did not know how or when the explosives were planted in the room….

It appeared to do minimal damage beyond the building itself, as a missile probably would have done.

This is very believable. It reflects how deeply Israeli intelligence services have penetrated Iran, operating in the past to remove Iran’s secret nuclear files from a heavily guarded warehouse, and assassinating leading Iranian scientists working on the nuclear program.

That deep penetration may come in handy if, as Iran has threatened, it retaliates for Haniyeh’s assassination.

I don’t trust NYT to get it right more than any other source.

In any case there is very deep bench of islamofascists waiting to take his place.

I initially thought Israel had done it through an airstrike of some sort. That would be scary enough: The idea that Israel can fly undetected deep into Iranian airspace, precisely target an individual apartment, and hit it flawlessly without being detected.

But this would make me even more uneasy were I a high ranking member of Hamas, Hezbollah or the Iranian government: The Israelis can predict where a high value target is going to be, Plant a bomb there undetected and then wait patiently for months for the target to arrive…then BLAM!. 72 Catholic Nuns to torment you for eternity.

How do you defend against that? I’d bet all of them are rethinking any travel plans they may have had for the near future.

If the Iranian regime had the broad support of its people, this would be harder for Israel to do.

The penalty for Iranians who assist/collaborate with Israel is death, yet, the fact that there are still Iranians willing to take this risk, shows how hated the Iranian regime is.

I’m thinking those hijabs may be worth something after all!

But how do they know it was planted 2 months ago, vs just week, or 6 months?

Someone got caught unfortunately

Hate to think how they got this information

My suspicion is this story was planted to set the Iranians at each others’ throats. A drone attack would fit the event.

The ops that Mossad and the IDF continually manage to pull off against the evil, goose-stepping Islamofascists and Muslim supremacists, with zero substantive and full-throated assistance from western allies, are simply amazing and awe-inspiring.

I don’t think we can vote this out, we will need to separate when they steal Trumps 3rd race

If they don’t kill him prior

You’re referring to the article on the DOJ’s decision to let three of the 9/11 terrorists escape the death penalty. It’s an outrageous, indefensible and contemptible decision that should anger every American.

But, my guess is that few of the Millennials and the Gen Z crowd who comprise a huge chunk of the Dhimmi-crats’ base can even recall the attacks, and, fewer still are outraged/angered by them.

Anybody else wondering why the bomb that killed Ismail Haniyeh at 2 a.m. in his bedroom also killed his bodyguard?

LOL.

2 hours earlier and a goat would have been obliterated, too.

Can you picture the next soiree between Khameini and Ghani and Nasrallah and the rest — and one of them says, “Hey fellas listen – why not we release the Israelis we kidnapped. Then, we all go home to our loving families. Then, we all celebrate life!! and the limited time we all have on earth. And then we go to bed and make sweet love with our wives. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Would you like me to call Bibi?”

If you were dealing with rational actors they would have concluded long ago not to go up against Israel, but you’re not. They all members of the Islamic death cult with a totalitarian political ideology pretending to be a religion.

Sorry,

We had no “Need to know that”. Whoever released that didn’t do the good guys any favors, perhaps put some secret Iranian Jew posing as a maid in the crosshairs for torture and death. Regardless, the info makes the next Mossad op riskier

The ny times isnt really a “newspaper” any more.

They are proudly dishonest. Not just slanted.
They’re more like The Emperor prancing about naked, imagining that he matters.

For myself, I haven’t bothered with a nytimes in 10+ years, and I feel like I’m much better informed about current events using other sources.

I’m sure Israel has bombs planted all over, in places that are undetectable. A remote detonator that can stay powered and active for months or even years without its batteries running dead is an amazing technical feat. It has to be able to receive a detonation command at any time and verify the code, but stay dormant for incredible amounts of time without losing power.

The “standard” residential smoke alarm now comes with a 10-year battery to negate the need to replace the old 9v battery every 6 months. Imagine the possibilities of devices that can lay dormant for 10 years….

This could also be a cover story, designed to lead Iranian officials to believe the perpetrators are long gone, when in fact the team that guided a flying weapon (even if only a short-range weapon like a Hellfire or other anti-tank missile) may still be in-country.

How could they have known months in advance which room Haniyeh would be staying in the next time he visited Tehran? Or did they just plant the bomb in that room and wait for a high-value target to stay there, so that it could just as easily have been the PIJ guy? (If they’d booby trapped all the rooms then why didn’t they take them both out at the same time?)

(*Ding* announcer on your laptop)

You Got Ismail.

Another angle! Maybe the mullahs have seen the “light” and wanted to turn down the flames against them! Could be that THEY had the bomb planted and then relieved themselves of their resident hamass problem AND caused the gazans to have something NEW to keep them in a frenzy! Maybe they see they’re on the LOSING side of the conflict and just “helped” out a little. Nothing better than to do something and blame Israel!

Interesting point. I have read that this is basically what the (Republican) US Government did to (Democrat) General George Armstrong Custer in 1876.

War and politics not for the faint of heart.

I called it when it happened. An airstrike was never what happened. The Mossad let the iranians, hezbolla, hamas know that they can reach out and cancel your a$& at anytime. They are sending a message to the mullahs.
