New Campus Carry Law in West Virginia Takes Effect Now
“Gov. Jim Justice signed the bill into law in March 2023, despite backlash from college administrators throughout the state.”
It should come as no surprise that college administrators and faculty members opposed this strongly.
West Virginia Metro News reports:
Campus Carry law takes effects Monday
Officials at WVU say they are ready for the Campus Self-Defense Act that takes effect Monday.
The law, deemed campus carry, allows those with a valid concealed carry license to carry on college campuses in certain areas. Gov. Jim Justice signed the bill into law in March 2023, despite backlash from college administrators throughout the state.
In preparation for the changes to campus, WVU’s Board of Governors passed BOG Finance and Administration Rule 5.14, which detailed certain exceptions to the law as well as safety precautions for students.
Preparations at WVU cost an estimated $1 million, according to Dean of Students and Co-Chair of the Campus Safety Steering Committee Corey Farris, who said the university is “pretty much ready” for the law’s implementation at a news conference last week.
Farris said the preparations at the university include placing signage and stickers on exempted areas, educating new students on the law, purchasing and placing metal detectors, as well as installing gun safes in select residence halls. All of which have been completed with the exception of a few signs and last minute communication with incoming students.
WVU has installed four gun safes across the WVU system, with two in Morgantown and one on both Keyser and Beckley campuses. Thus far, four lockers have been rented on the Morgantown campus, one on the Beckley campus and zero on the Keyser campus, Farris said.

So… it’s 2:30 pm on the east coast. I haven’t heard of any murders on WV college campuses yet. Where’s the carnage, folks? Where are the lunatics? They don’t have a “cool down period” for buying firearms in WV, right?
About damn time. There is no logical reason whatsoever why a public establishment populated entirely by free people of adult age should ever be a “rights-free zone.” Because it’s “educational?” Not only is that irrational, you are deliberately miseducating our young adults. Rights are a jealous protection AGAINST the state, not a privilege kindly granted by the state.
Wow, by weeks end there should be carnage across the state campi. I wonder what would have happened if all those Jews being assaulted on other campus locations throughout the nation were able to defend themselves.
🙂
There are many problems associated with students carrying guns on a college ampus:
1) Excessive drinking – much alcohol is consumed in places that are not licensed by the state.
2) Immature minds – 18 year olds have not fully developed their impulse control. When an 18 year old enlists in the military, they are highly trained including on how to control emotions and aggression. That is not the case with typical college students.
3) College atmosphere – the most important part of college is the ability to explore ideas and test boundaries. The environment encourages testing ideas knowing that you are free to drop them tomorrow. If your classmates can conceal carry, there woulf be a chill on such explorations.
4) Maintain order – don’t assume that only students who lean right will buy and carry guns. Famously at Cornell in April 1969, it was the radical black students who bought rifles and bandoliers. An organized, politically active student group can easily out match the limited firepower of the campus police. Fear of political blowback would never allow campus administrators to authorize police to shoot at students.
Law, grad,,
You are Blindly repeating all the canards against concealed arms carry.
The only ones you left out our “blood in the streets “and shootouts over parking spaces.
Utah has allowed campus carry since 2004.
Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee (faculty only), Texas, and Wisconsin all have campus carry laws.
Your predictions have not come true in any of these states.
Please feel free to continue respecting the Bill of Rights except for those 18 to 21 years old
