Johnson, Jeffries Announce Trump Assassination Attempt Task Force

The task force will have all investigative authority, including subpoena authority.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced a bipartisan task force to investigate the failed security that led to a man shooting former President Donald Trump.

The shooter killed Corey Comperatore and injured James Copenhaver and David Dutch.

“We have the utmost confidence in this bipartisan group of steady, highly qualified and capable Members of Congress to move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability and help make certain such failures never happen again,” said Speaker Johnson and Leader Jeffries in a combined statement.

The task force has three objectives:

  • To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination
  • To ensure accountability
  • To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again

The committee has seven Republicans and six Democrats.

The Republican members are:

  • Chairman Rep. Mike Kelly (PA-16)
  • Rep. Mark Green (TN-07)
  • Rep. David Joyce (OH-14)
  • Rep. Laurel Lee (FL-15)
  • Rep. Michael Waltz (FL-06)
  • Rep. Clay Higgins (LA-03)
  • Rep. Pat Fallon (TX-04)

Kelly represents Butler, PA, the location of the assassination attempt. He attended the rally and sat in the front row.

Democrats:

  • Ranking Member Rep. Jason Crow (CO-06)
  • Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46)
  • Rep. Madeleine Dean (PA-04)
  • Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06)
  • Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04)
  • Rep. Jared Moskowitz (FL-23)

The task force will have all investigative authority, including subpoena authority.

“For the remainder of this Congress, it will assume control and jurisdiction over all pending House committee investigations regarding the Trump assassination attempt,” the two added.

I’ve read that some of the agents that extricated President Trump from the stage were “DEI hires”. My understanding of that term is essentially “didn’t earn it”. This philosophy seems to have infected our government hierarchy to a large degree.

So when important things that matter need to be investigated, do we, supposed critical thinkers, look for the DEI hires to perform the investigation, or, do we identify people with the skill set necessary to excel at the investigation?

Because this incident is being handled and reported in such a unique way, my MO is to question everything about the incident, the theories and the reporting. I personally have many questions that have been unanswered. I have seen various theories by ordinary people that beg more questions. What I haven’t seen is our bureaucracy and all their talking heads give me information. Our news media has done even less by just parroting government spokespeople.

So now, our elected elites in Congress have put together an equivalent to the Warren Commission. Did they look at all of their members and ask themselves who could best do this important task best for the American public? Or, did they place members on this committee for other considerations?

I personally would have liked to see people with a sniper’s skill set evaluate the actions and processes taken for site selection and threat determination, mitigation of potential threats to at least be part of this important work, and have the backing of political leadership to actually do a quality job.

I’m not convinced that this review has the members necessary to do the job Americans need done

I’m sure this will result in one or more strongly worded letters and absolutely nothing will change.

Stop it. This is serious business, and even Democrats are horrified by the disgrace that is the Secret Service.

Ironclaw in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | July 29, 2024 at 6:39 pm

Democrats are horrified the guy missed, fixed it for you. Never take anything a communist says at face value

To say that the Democrats are horrified that the guy missed is playing directly into the hands of Harris and the Democratic Party. The people who will decide this election are not Trump supporters like you. They are Independents and undecideds. So when you say that the Democrats wanted Trump to be assassinated, these voters will turn against you and Trump. It is people like you who will cause Trump to lose this election.

I get it, you don’t like the truth. I’m not even going to pretend that Communists are good people just that they’re Savvy enough to not call openly for the assassination of their opponent. If he was taken down I’m sure none of them would have any issues about it

All you have to do is listen to the Dems/celebrities and other hangers-on who said the quiet part out loud to know what they’re all thinking. If there’s anything that characterizes the Left it’s group-think. If you hear what one is thinking, you can be fairly assume the rest are thinking it.

Dimsdale in reply to JR. | July 30, 2024 at 9:46 am

Well, given the numerous videos, street interviews, tweets and emails from the left saying that, in a nutshell, that they are disappointed (some even having online fits) that the shooter missed, argues that the leftists are saying it themselves.

          Loudly, publicly, and unashamedly.

Those voters are already against Pres. Trump and America. That’s the Frankenstein monster that YOUR side has created.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to Ironclaw. | July 29, 2024 at 7:13 pm

I doubt she meant that at all, and “fixed it for you” is just plain rude.

No, I fixed it for you it’s because I fixed the meaning of what she said. They’re not horrified that it happened they’re horrified the guy missed.

Fatfinger downvote meant to be upvote, IC.

Don’t think the ‘ex’ Democrat took up for Dems?

          You’re not paying attention.

          IC is spot on.

A do-nothing ‘committee’ will maybe put out a report whose only use will be for the left to bash the right with –even if the left, in an upcoming issue of Time or Newsweek, publishes a gloating article about how they planned the whole thing in a conspiracy.

Sorry, Fuzzy. Unless and until jail doors go *clang*, this whole exercise is absolutely meaningless. I’ve been watching watching Congress for over fifty years, and I have no faith whatever in it.

I have 0 faith in my congressman Dean wanting the truth.
      I hope I am surprised
      And yes it’s serious business

Ghostrider in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | July 29, 2024 at 7:40 pm

Florida congressman Corey Mills, a former US Army veteran with the 82nd Airborne Division and trained sniper, stated the following, as he has assessed the Trump assassination attempt to date, “We will get to a point where gross negligence will be indistinguishable from purposeful intent.”

And this is where the reality of a potential conspiracy lies.

alaskabob in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | July 29, 2024 at 8:40 pm

I wish it were so. One Dem staffer got axed…. where there was one… I bet many. Staffers mirror their mentors. It will remain unspoken but many wished the shooting had succeeded. The Left hates to lose but they also hate having to win. The present Dem front running is just a place holder…. there is no value in hurting old Joe or Harris. Hurting Trump had and continues to have value. The true Dem leaders are in the shadows.

henrybowman in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | July 29, 2024 at 10:03 pm

“Stop it. This is serious business”

      Puh-leeze, Fuzzy.

Waco was the largest mass murder on American soil (at the time). Who in the federal government lost their life, their freedom, or even their paycheck over it? Nobody. Janet Reno “took full responsibility” and then continued to serve, business as usual, until she retired to her choice of trailer park. Several other people actually got medals and promotions, for killing record numbers of women and children.

Does this task force have “promotion powers?” Because they might turn out to need those way more than those other powers.

Can you pick out the ones who are co conspirators?
I can’t. Ivan is not standing idly by
So I think it’s best we see other people… 🙂
Might have to clean my glasses for that… 🙂

Paddy M in reply to Ironclaw. | July 29, 2024 at 6:03 pm

Close. We’ll get a 1,000 plus page report in which recommendations will be made and no one else gets held to account. The USSS will also get a sizable increase in budget and the clowns on the committee will have new campaigns ads. Everyone wins except the taxpayer and those with the misfortune of being protected by short, fat DEI hires.

Milhouse in reply to Ironclaw. | July 30, 2024 at 1:23 am

I’m sure this will result in one or more strongly worded letters and absolutely nothing will change.

That’s most of what Congress can do. The most it can do is pass legislation and send it to whoever is holding Biden’s signature pen, but that would require the senate to pass it as well, which means it would have to satisfy the Dems. Short of that all it can do is write letters.

mailman in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 4:48 am

This is not even remotely true. Somehow the last Democrat Congress found the will to imprison people for not turning up.

That seems a lot stronger than a strongly worded letter.

Milhouse in reply to mailman. | July 30, 2024 at 9:22 am

The Congress didn’t imprison anyone for anything. Congress hasn’t imprisoned anyone for nearly a century. It holds people in contempt, like Holder or Garland, and the US Attorney decides whether to prosecute.

Also, we’re not talking about people who refuse to appear. We’re talking about doing something about safety; and it can’t do that without the Dems’ cooperation.

Azathoth in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 9:20 am

      weird.

Isn’t Steve Bannon in jail for ‘contempt of congress’?

Milhouse in reply to Azathoth. | July 30, 2024 at 9:23 am

Yes. Congress didn’t do that. And in any case we’re not talking about compelling witnesses to appear. We’re talking about the outcome of the inquiry. Other than legislation that would require Dem cooperation and Biden’s signature, the only thing Congress can do is write strong letters.

mailman in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 12:07 pm

He just woke up one day I. prison cause Congress didn’t do that 😂😂😂

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 4:04 pm

Congress didn’t prosecute him. It can’t. The US Attorney did that. If he’d been a Democrat the US Attorney would have decided not to prosecute him and there’d be nothing Congress could do about it.

It will be refreshing to hear from people who were present rather then the supervisors who were not even there.

inspectorudy | July 29, 2024 at 5:18 pm

The House should just go on break until the election since all they do is blow hot air. What a waste of taxpayer’s dollars!

drsamherman | July 29, 2024 at 6:16 pm

So, that slime Bennie Thompson isn’t on the committee after calling for rent of Trump’s USSS protection?

Unless the committee comes back recommending firing every supervisor all the way up the chain, every bean counter in HQ who basically told the on the ground teams to ‘do more with less’ or some other variation of ‘you ain’t getting X, figure it out’, requiring every damn agent to to publicly run whatever PT test/obstacle course on video released to public firing those who fail then firing everyone in a position to make objections to this DEI and penny pinching crap but didn’t…then just save the time and $ and skip it.

We don’t need more BS reports that don’t get read, proposals that don’t implemented and incompetents ID that don’t get fired. We have had plenty of those along with faux outrage to deliver for cameras.

destroycommunism | July 29, 2024 at 6:26 pm

and the gop finds another way to get sucked into the lefty void

“To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination
To ensure accountability
To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again”

Where is the investigation into what inspired a 20 year old to attempt the assassination?

Non-exhaustive list of candidates:
Democrat politicians and media which repeatedly peddled lies like the Charlottesville “Fine People” hoax and comparisons of Trump with Hitler.
US government entities which fear negative outcomes from a Trump presidency.
Foreign government entities which fear negative outcomes from a Trump presidency.

All of these are possible. But remember that there was all sorts of similar speculation about Jared Loughner’s motives, and fingers pointed at Republicans (including Palin) for this and that, and it turned out that none of that was a factor.

There have been many crimes that were initially blamed on, for instance, a scene in a movie or a book, and then it transpired that the criminal had never seen the movie or read the book, and had no idea that they contained such a scene.

Also think of all the crimes that were “obviously” motivated by hatred, but turned out to be something quite different. The Orlando nightclub massacre, where the shooter turned out to be a jihadist who had no idea it was a gay club. Or the spate of fake bomb threats phoned in to Jewish Community Centers in early 2017, which turned out not to have been antisemitic after all.

I’m not saying your proposed reasons are wrong, just that we can’t yet know whether they’re right.

henrybowman in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 2:39 am

It’s worth keeping in mind that Loughner was a simple Sirhan/Czolgosz/Squeaky-type assassin — handgun from close in a crowd, which takes only minimal planning and skill. Crooks was an Oswald/Ray-style assassin — something that takes a lot more preparation, premeditation, and competence.

      Nah. There wasn’t.

There were desperate Dem lies about Loughner.

There was no need to speculate at all. Loughner’s insanity was all over the internet. You could go read it yourself.

The man was murderously angry at punctuation.

But Democrats did–and still do try to make him out as someone who was radicalized by the right while ignoring explicit examples of their rhetoric coming home to roost.

Sometimes with the perp explicitly saying so.

But, of course, you, being a Democrat know that–

Also think of all the crimes that were “obviously” motivated by hatred, but turned out to be something quite different. The Orlando nightclub massacre, where the shooter turned out to be a jihadist who had no idea it was a gay club

This is the leftist lie. He was trying to kill homosexuals. Because the Quran demands it.

Or the spate of fake bomb threats phoned in to Jewish Community Centers in early 2017, which turned out not to have been antisemitic after all.

This is the leftist lie –told because it turned out that a leftist was the one doing it.

No, he wasn’t. He had literally no idea that it was a gay club.

Alex deWynter in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 10:33 am

I agree. With the caveat that it’s impossible to completely trust anything being reported about the shooter, beyond a doubt he was a 20-year-old young man. He was seeking status (and it’s pretty clear from the look of him that his route to that wasn’t through any athletic accomplishments). Maybe he was a true believer trying to become a hero on the left, maybe he was just trying to do the ultimate dunk on the pro-Trump side, maybe he was just an Arthur Bremer wannabe seeking notoriety by killing someone famous. We don’t yet know for sure.

gibbie in reply to Milhouse. | July 30, 2024 at 10:50 am

My point is that the “Trump Assassination Attempt Task Force” doesn’t seem to be looking into what motivated Crooks.

Um. Maybe they should rename it. Really, it sounds less like an investigation and more as a thing that the USSS might want to check out as a threat.

Not quite sure why Democrats are on this committee given its their years of violent hate speech that led to the assassination attempt.

Thats a bit like putting a rapist on a committee to come up with how rapists should be punished or putting a pedophile on to a child sex committee. You know, pretty much Democrats.

E Howard Hunt | July 30, 2024 at 6:54 am

People need to stop romanticizing certain professions based on Hollywood movies. Back when I was an agent Secret Service was part of the Treasury Department and just about everybody belonged to the union. You know what, like everywhere else, young guys are more concerned with getting drunk, chasing tail and fiddling their timesheets and expense reports than anything else.

Look at the drunken scandals going back a decade before Cheatle.

So seven Republicans being fought tooth and nail by the six Democrats.

I trust the end result will be more believable than the J6 farce, where they actually destroyed evidence and testimony, cherry picked testimony and came to a predetermined conclusion, with the help of sellout Republicans.
