‘Chance to Bring the Country Together’: Donald Trump Focusing on Unity at RNC

Do we have a new Donald Trump?

Former President Donald Trump told the excellent Salena Zito at The Washington Examiner that he tore up his RNC convention speech, which attacked President Joe Biden.

Before I go further, I have to tell you that Zito attended the rally. She and her family were near the stage.

But now Trump’s RNC speech will focus on unity due to the assassination attempt on his life.

The shooting opened up Trump’s eyes:

“The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” Trump told Zito. “Had this not happened, this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches.”

Trump added: “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

We saw many people come out for Trump after the shooting. He told Zito that people “from different walks of life and different political views have called him.”

Trump also realizes how lucky he is because if he did not turn his head when he did, his family would be planning a funeral:

Trump said people all across the country from different walks of life and different political views have called him, and he noted that he was saved from death because he turned from the crowd to look at a screen showing data he was using in his speech.

“That reality is just setting in,” he said. “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

Talking as he boarded his plane in Bedminster, New Jersey, for Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention starts Monday and lasts through Thursday, Trump said his speech will meet the moment that history demands. “It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance.”

Trump’s change threatens the Democrats more than speeches about Biden and the left. Focusing on unity, staying calm, and remaining positive is the way to go for Trump.

Trump has released excellent statements since the assassination attempt. He’s focused on the other victims and setting up a GoFundMe for Corey Comperatore, who died protecting his family.

Trump is making American folklore.

Would love to read the text of the “humdinger.”

We don’t need a “new” DJT

We just desperately need DJT

It’s the same DJT, just a different message.

I hope Trump is not entering his soft guy era

A shift to less combative language is fine, preferred even so long as the overall policy goals remain the same. There’s A quote that goes something like ‘Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to hell in way that makes them look forward to the trip’. Modeling on TR and speaking softly but carrying a big stick isn’t the worst strategy.

Same Trump, different branding/packaging for the message. No need to worry.

I like the idea of taking the “bring the country together” route. If the Democrats Communists hold true to their past history they won’t be able to lay off doing something insane and dangerous for the country (like try to indict Trump claiming he staged his own assassination), so a good speech by Trump would draw a very sharp distinction.

Are you suggesting that you will be mad if Trump manages to unite the country?

And by the way, Donald has ALWAYS focused on other victims first

ALWAYS

Democrat left celebrates violence and hate. You can’t unite with that.

guyjones in reply to geronl. | July 15, 2024 at 1:38 pm

The leftists’ vile ethos goes back to the Reconstruction era and the southern Dhimmi-crats’ founding of and participation in the KKK. Those tactics of violence, intimidation and thuggery have never gone away. And, they’ve been given new ideological fervor and motivation, under the cancerous banner of Marxist-Leninist, Maoist, racialist and Islamist agitprop.

It may reach some independents who were either anti-Trump or on the fence.

And nothing will be done, just Imagine if someone said this about Biden

ONE day after the assassination attempt

What a piece of crap

I understand Trump’s desire to bask in the glow of common humanity and to reach out to the other side. And certainly, after what happened, he should tone down any attacks on Biden he had written into his stemwinder. That said, the idea that there are Dems or Dem progressives who are rational and open to reason is absurd. They aren’t going to change their minds about a single rotten Biden/progressive policy. They wanted Trump dead before Saturday; they want him dead today.

A limited kumbaya, okay. A love-in, no. Let’s not get carried away. Nothing has changed. He needs to remember that, or he’s going to get rolled in a second term the same way he did in the first.

I hear you and you’re right that the totalitarian and viciously lawless and thuggish Democrats are not open to unity or to political compromise, or, an olive branch.

That said, from a tactical standpoint, President Trump’s more measured, optimistic and Reagan-esque messaging is shrewd. If it results in his peeling off a few hundred thousand disaffected Independents and Dhimmi-crats, the end result could bear fruit.

Taking the high ground, rhetorically, while still unabashedly promoting pro-MAGA policies, is undeniably savvy.

    Dathurtz in reply to Titan28. | July 15, 2024 at 1:51 pm

Opposing and eliminating Trump is part of a business plan. The business plan didn’t go away just because their 20 year old patsy missed.

It’s hard to find common ground with people that want you dead.

If he can somehow court the country’s center (more than he already has), then he can lay the framework to unite the country. If 2/3 of the country were to be united against corruption and tyranny, the other 1/3 would be toothless.

CommoChief in reply to healthguyfsu. | July 15, 2024 at 8:38 pm

Agreed. Make the overture to try and convince them to dump the d/prog by pointing out the policies of the d/prog in clear language. Let the facts speak for themselves; transgender in women/girls spaces, DEI v merit, bad economic policies hitting everybody’s wallet and so on. No need for sarcastic name calling not everyone finds it humorous. (I find it hilarious like an old school ’80s regional Pro wrestling promo clip)

Trump is right I think. Turn to a unifying message and ignore Biden’s complete collapse
Refuse to debate Biden again and let the Democrats flail about. The “Trump will destroy our Constitution/Democracy/Country” schtick won’t play well now. Hell, NBC yanked The Morning Joe this morning which is nothing but Trump’s Hitler in every segment.
Now what’s Biden going to run on? Economy? I just went grocery shopping. Foreign Policy? How many wars under Joey’s belt after abandoning Afghanistan? Border Security? Yeah…no.

The last time we had Unity was 9-11.

So much unity that we applauded the Patriot Act and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. And, of course, we united more with the removal of our shoes and quasi sexual assaults on our persons before boarding an aircraft. Soon followed by watching terrorists, which there were not that many so an agency the size of the DHS would need to create them. Hello White Nationalist with your suspicious church going abortion protesting flag waving standing up for your rights wanting to be left alone and take care of your family terrorist.

I don’t care who is President. Whenever we hear unity it means that loss of freedom is following close behind.

healthguyfsu in reply to George S. | July 15, 2024 at 4:24 pm

We were unified on the backdrop of two globalist corrupt power brokers in Clinton and Bush.

There is a possibility of a different story, even if it didn’t happen last time.

healthguyfsu | July 15, 2024 at 4:20 pm

I, for one, am looking forward to this speech. I don’t usually listen to them for either side because I know they are mostly useless.

However, I am still cynical about anything changing. Year after year, Trump would speak about unifying during the SOTU and it never happened. To be completely fair, I don’t think it was his fault as the left was intent on giving him zero common ground to work with.

But I will listen again and see what he has to say. It could potentially be the start of a new day (a change that we desperately need). I guess you have to be optimistic from time to time.

What I want Trump to do at his next speech is to open with “As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted….”

I’m hoping he’s as serious about unity as the lying democrats. Since when has pedo joe ever told the truth?
They got caught by surprise at the assassination attempt. They know their lies about PDJT were the biggest reason the kid tried to shoot him.
And just like when the people got tired of the lies and being called fascists over the fake wuflu, the democrats go off and pretend to want unity.
I say GFY democrats. Resign en masse.
