SCOTUS Chief Justice Roberts Also Declines to Speak With Democrats About Alito and the Flags

“Moreover, the format proposed – a meeting with leaders of only one party who have expressed an interest in matters currently pending before the Court – simply underscores that participating in such a meeting would be inadvisable.”

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts told Democratic lawmakers he would not meet with them about the flags at Justice Samuel Alito’s home.

The Democrats have been trying everything in their power to make sure Trump loses his cases regarding the 2020 election and January 6th protests.

The Appeal to Heaven and upside-down American flags outside of the Alitos’ house are the latest weapons to use against Trump. (And Alito…their hatred for him went through the roof when someone leaked his opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.)

The Democrats want Alito to recuse himself.

Alito already kindly enough told the Democrats to, you know, um, go away.

Roberts, like Alito, was more eloquent than I would have been:

I must respectfully decline your request for a meeting. As noted in my letter to Chairman [DICK] Durbin last April, apart from ceremonial events, onlu on rare occasions in our Nation’s history has a sitting Chief Justice met with legislators, even in a public setting (such as a Committee hearing) with members of both major political parties present. Separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence counsel against such appearances. Moreover, the format proposed – a meeting with leaders of only one party who have expressed an interest in matters currently pending before the Court – simply underscores that participating in such a meeting would be inadvisable.

In other words…stop politicizing SCOTUS.

An Appeal to Heaven and upside down American flag ticked off the Democrats because the Alitos flew it outside of one of their homes. It’s a sign of hatred and stolen 2020 election because people carried it on January 6!

They also carried American flags and the Gadsden flag.

The Appeal to Heaven flag has roots back to the Revolutionary War. I’m glad to know that the Democrats hate America. Well, we knew that, but happy to know they won’t hide it.

Alito said his wife did it. So what if she did? Do these men want Alito to control his wife, or do they want women to be free and make their own decisions?

Guess who flies the flags in my household? ME. Alito reminds the Democrats his wife is her own person:

My wife and I own our Virginia home jointly. She therefore has the legal right to use the property as she sees fit, and there were no additional steps that I could have taken to have the flag taken down more promptly.

My wife’s reasons for flying the flag are not relevant for present purposes, but I note that she was greatly distressed at the time due, in a large part, to a very nasty neighborhood dispute in which I had no involvement. A house on the street displayed a sign attacking her personally, and a man who was living in the house at the time trailed her all the way down the street and berated her in my presence using foul language, including what I regard as the vilest epithet that can be addressed to a woman.

My wife is a private citizen and she possess the same First Amendment rights as every other American. She makes her own decisions, and I have always respected her right to do so. She has made many sacrifices to accommodate my service on the Supreme Court, including the insult of having to endure numerous loud, obscene, and personally insulting protests in front of our home that continue to this day and now threaten to escalate.

Anyway, I honestly think all the justices are sick of everyone trying to politicize SCOTUS. It should rarely be used.

MIC DROP:

I am confident any reasonable person who is not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to affect the outcome of Supreme Court cases would conclude that the events recounted above do not meet the applicable standard for recusal. I am therefore required to reject your request.

Alito admitted he lacked familiarity with the Appeal to Heaven flag, which shocked me. But whatever.

If only Justice Alito’s wife had possessed the good sense to fly a rainbow “Pride” flag, a “Black Lives Matter” flag, an ISIS flag, or, a Fakestinian Arab Invaders from Arabia flag, then this “controversy” never would have arisen.

Yes, that’s sarcasm.

It would also help if the d/prog actually gave a hoot about separation of powers and an independent Judiciary instead of choosing to blend them together as a single weapon to bash their political opponents.

guyjones in reply to CommoChief. | May 31, 2024 at 3:29 pm

      Yes, that too.

It’s unfortunate that the Dhimmi-crat, fallaciously self-styled and self-congratulatory “Progressives,” are, in fact, noxiously regressive, lawless and vindictive totalitarians who care only about possessing and expanding their political power, and, wielding it against any citizens who possess the temerity to reject their destructive agenda and orthodoxies.

You left out flaming hypocrites who claim that having a spouse flying a flag for a day should make a Supreme Court justice recuse themselves from any court case regarding anything they want, but having a daughter raising hundreds of millions of dollars from the direct political opponents of President Trump is perfectly fine.

It may be sarcasm, but it’s also a fact.

I would not be surprised if the Democrats tried to subpoena Roberts and/or Alito. Doesn’t matter if it is a violation of the separation of powers – ultimately if Democrats have the guns of Federal agencies like the FBI and ATF they will use it.

Yesterday’s Lavrentiy Beria-style verdict against Trump should forever end the idea that Democrats feel constrained by the law or the Constitution.

I’ve flown one because I thought it was a great historical flag. Also fly our first flag with the union jack in the corner, the flag Gen Washington flew over his HQ at Valley Forge, Don’t tread on me, Green Mt Boys, Gadsden, Betsy Ross and many others. Never knew my love of our history was insurrectiony

Your love of history IS insurrectiony, and that is something to be proud of.

    irishgladiator63 in reply to diver64. | May 31, 2024 at 6:03 pm

But that’s the thing. It is insurrection now. Because they want to control history and say what everything means. How dare you contradict them with knowledge and reality.

And THAT’S why they hate that flag.
    It’s ANTI-DEMOCRAT.

“Get your woman under control, Alito!” 🤣🤣🤣

It shouldn’t matter if Alito flew the flag himself. Justices aren’t required to be apolitical. Obviously they have personal political beliefs. And what would the flags have symbolized? Disapproval of the counting of votes cast by unlawfully seated electors, or disapproval of the pro-Trump crowd’s storming of the Capitol? Or general distress over the entirety of events that day? It wouldn’t really matter, because critics claiming it does matter are pretending none of the other justices have personal political beliefs. Ultimately, no person has the authority to inquire into his personal beliefs, and no person has the authority to take adverse action against him based on presumptions about his personal beliefs.

Fortunately I think most of the judges are smart enough to understand that the tactics used on Trump can and will be turned on them.

Milhouse in reply to DaveGinOly. | June 1, 2024 at 7:57 am

If Alito were to have flown the flags himself, and doing so really did express support for the Stop the Steal movement, then he would have to recuse himself from any case involving the 2020 presidential election. Hence the importance of informing the senators that neither of these two things were true.

Likewise had a case involving the 2016 election ever come before the court, Ginsberg would have had to recuse herself, and would have done so.

With all this pressure on the Supreme Court to bend to the will of the Democrat party I would not be surprised if the rulings this summer are far broader than commonly expected.

I have expected that the obstruction charges against the J6 protestors would be reversed and now believe that the court may go even further. Don’t know that the long incarcerations without trial are before them but maybe they will find a way to undue this travesty anyway.

With regard to Trump, I think they will certainly grant Presidential immunity for official acts and would not be surprised if they include his speech and acts on J6.

I will go further and predict that if Judge Freisler sentences Trump to jail time or restricts his campaign travel the USSC will hear his appeal and reverse well ahead of the election.

Showing some rare backbone there, let’s see if that continues

henrybowman in reply to Skip. | May 31, 2024 at 7:15 pm

I’d think twice before ascribing backbone to a fellow who has made a career out of dodging inconvenient questions doing exactly that once again.

    JohnSmith100 in reply to Skip. | May 31, 2024 at 10:33 pm

It would be pretty neat if SCOTUS starts giving the fickle finger.

Good for Roberts. I am sick and tired of all the LI commentators here who post that Roberts is a traitor, part of the GOPe, one world government, never Trump, Trilateral Commission, John Birch Society, Bildebergers, Jewish bankers, etc. Give it up. Please.

Once again, thank God for Donald Trump and his Supreme Court nominations, without which the witch would have a 5-4 court on her side going into a second term of unbridled Democrat control.
