Boy Scouts Changing Name to Scouting America in the Name of Inclusivity

Boy Scouts of America will change its name to Scouting America to become more inclusive, “reflecting the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcome every youth and family in America to experience the benefits of Scouting.”

Stop erasing sexes! I’m against erasing females. I’m against erasing males.

“Though our name will be new, our mission remains unchanged: we are committed to teaching young people to be Prepared. For Life,” stated Roger A. Krone, president and chief executive officer of Scouting America. “This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in Scouting.”

Yes, the organization is pandering to the left. But I bet membership has something to do with the change. Membership went way down once over 80,000 men said “they were sexually abused as children while scouting.”

The organization’s $2.4 billion bankruptcy reorganization plan began last year so it could still operate while compensating those men.

The scandal and pandemic dwindled the number of boys in Boy Scouts, which currently has just over 1,000,000 kids.

That number includes over 176,000 females.

The Boy Scouts welcomed females in 2019. Nearly 1,000 females made the inaugural female Eagle Scouts class in 2021.

Selby Chipman, a class member, formed an all-girl troop in North Carolina. It has grown from five to 50.

It looks like Boy Scouts have all-girl troops, all-boy troops.

Correction from reader Richard, who allowed me to copy and paste his email. Thank you, Richard!!

While I understand that the link in that statement cites a news story that mentions co-ed troops, that is false. BSA does not charter co-ed troops. It will only charter boys’ troops and girls’ troops. A boys’ troop and a girls’ troop can both be chartered by the same organization and share the same Troop Committee, but they remain separate units with separate leaders. (We have different Scoutmasters for each Troop. The Troops may decide to do some activities together, but they have separate youth leadership, bank accounts, and function completely independent of each other in all material respects.)Where the confusion comes from is that Cub Scouts allows for co-ed Packs, and Venturing Crews and Sea Scout Ships are also co-ed.

However, boys cannot join Girl Scouts because research “shows that a girl learns best in an all-girl, girl-led, and girl-friendly environment.”

I get it. I quit Brownies and Girl Scouts because I wanted to be a Boy Scout. But I didn’t because I’m female.

How about a separate group like Club Swanson? Great episode from Parks & Recreation.
