Boy Scouts Changing Name to Scouting America in the Name of Inclusivity

Boy Scouts Changing Name to Scouting America in the Name of Inclusivity

The Boy Scouts already started admitting girls in 2019. Did you know boys cannot join Girl Scouts?

Boy Scouts of America will change its name to Scouting America to become more inclusive, “reflecting the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcome every youth and family in America to experience the benefits of Scouting.”

Stop erasing sexes! I’m against erasing females. I’m against erasing males.

“Though our name will be new, our mission remains unchanged: we are committed to teaching young people to be Prepared. For Life,” stated Roger A. Krone, president and chief executive officer of Scouting America. “This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in Scouting.”

Yes, the organization is pandering to the left. But I bet membership has something to do with the change. Membership went way down once over 80,000 men said “they were sexually abused as children while scouting.”

The organization’s $2.4 billion bankruptcy reorganization plan began last year so it could still operate while compensating those men.

The scandal and pandemic dwindled the number of boys in Boy Scouts, which currently has just over 1,000,000 kids.

That number includes over 176,000 females.

The Boy Scouts welcomed females in 2019. Nearly 1,000 females made the inaugural female Eagle Scouts class in 2021.

Selby Chipman, a class member, formed an all-girl troop in North Carolina. It has grown from five to 50.

It looks like Boy Scouts have all-girl troops, all-boy troops.

Correction from reader Richard, who allowed me to copy and paste his email. Thank you, Richard!!

While I understand that the link in that statement cites a news story that mentions co-ed troops, that is false. BSA does not charter co-ed troops. It will only charter boys’ troops and girls’ troops. A boys’ troop and a girls’ troop can both be chartered by the same organization and share the same Troop Committee, but they remain separate units with separate leaders. (We have different Scoutmasters for each Troop. The Troops may decide to do some activities together, but they have separate youth leadership, bank accounts, and function completely independent of each other in all material respects.)

Where the confusion comes from is that Cub Scouts allows for co-ed Packs, and Venturing Crews and Sea Scout Ships are also co-ed.

However, boys cannot join Girl Scouts because research “shows that a girl learns best in an all-girl, girl-led, and girl-friendly environment.”

I get it. I quit Brownies and Girl Scouts because I wanted to be a Boy Scout. But I didn’t because I’m female.

How about a separate group like Club Swanson? Great episode from Parks & Recreation.

If they start including girls in their overnight camping trips, the abuse is bound to stop.

    Groomin’ on a Sunday Afternoon,

We’ll keep on spending sunny days this way
We’re gonna talk and laugh our time away
I feel it coming closer day by day
Life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly

    [Chorus]
    Groovin’ on a Sunday afternoon
Really couldn’t get away too soon
    No, no, no, no

    [NAMBLA theme song]

      Is that the lyric?
Well, that explains who Leslie was, and why they thought they would need her.

It’s always a mistake to get rid of a famous trademark, and new management will do it every time. It is a sign of ineptitude.

Well, someone is standing for this. Otherwise, there’d be no need for a name change because they wouldn’t even exist. It’s a shame to see how much people will tolerate. One would have thought that the Boy Scouts was full of conservative leaning families who would have not permitted all this to happen, or would have abandoned the BSA when it did. Apparently, these are all the same “conservatives” who vowed never to watch another NFL game.

The folks at HQ are not the folks at District level my h less Troop level. I suspect that if we look at the locations of various ‘conservative’ orgs or at least the ones generally perceived to be center/right in philosophy aka those that encourage independence and some level of self sufficiency v govt/societal dependency we would find them to be in blue enclaves if not in blue States. The BSA is HQ in Irving TX which is part of the Dallas/Ft Worth metro area. Like all urban areas and suburbs the political climate is left driven in part by the number of college educated females who, as a demographic, skew left voting for Biden by well more than a dozen points.

Major abandonment went on out here. The Mormon Church had adopted the BSA program as its own youth program… to the point where it was practically impossible for a non-Mormon to find a non-Mormon troop for his kid. When BSA went through its Great Change, the Church dropped them like a hot potato and established its own youth program, using pretty much the same programs that BSA used to offer. Of course, a side-effect of this was that actual BSA troops pretty much vanished from our area of the desert.

It was a good run while it lasted.
But they’ve lost the bubble, starting with their response to some of the abuse stuff. You can still have a decent troop/pack if it’s affiliated with a strong enough Christian church. But there’s no support for that from the top.

Relying upon religious affiliation to preclude sexual exploitation and abuse is not a panacea. Lots of so called ‘christians’ have sexually abused children, often for years. (small c deliberate b/c anyone who molested children or enables it ain’t a Christian IMO) Sexual exploitation of children or adults for that matter should not be laid at the feet of a particular religion or the absence of a particular religion. It is evil and perverted and should be exposed and denounced with heavy penalties; if I was king it would be the death penalty.

Neither my Dad nor I acheived the rank of Eagle but we were loyal Boy Scouts. He was the Troop master for 625 and showed us many valuable skills.

The Boy Scouts recently added “Citizenship in Society” as an Eagle requires merit badge. It’s a grotesque homage to leftist drivel. Purpose: “To help educate Scouts in what Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are”.

The removed “Safety”, a truly valuable merit badge, from the required list.

The Boy Scouts of America are finished, destroyed by the left and enabled by their COWARDLY leadership.

Sounds like in the new “Scouting America” you might be able to earn a merit badge for dressing in drag during a camping overnight trip.

I was a cub scout for a year or so. Then in the early ’70’s BSA revamped the program and dropped many of the outdoorsman, woodman, survival type requirements. My parents weren’t interested in turning my brothers and I into eco warriors so we dropped and never went back, even when they realized the error of their ways and backtracked on the “new scouting” garbage.

Dad was better equipped to teach us most of those skills anyway.

If I remember correctly, they lost a couple million members over that fiasco and I know for a fact that they never got some of them back because I was one of that cohort.

That was probably the beginning of the end for scouting. The organization never really recovered from that and membership has been dropping steadily ever since.

My Cub/Webelos packs and Boy Scout troops in late ’70’s and early to mid ’80’s were run by a bunch of Vietnam Veterans. Many of whom were LEO, Fire Fighters, EMT. The local USMC and Army Recruiters had sons my age and were involved.

Looking back as an adult they taught us all sorts of useful stuff but it would also likely land them in jail in today’s woke environment. When we learned knots and pioneering we built fortifications and applications for hasty bridge crossings. First aid included treatment for GSW. We had mandatory hikes 2X per month with a ruck. There were a few retired SF and Ranger guys that taught all sorts of useful tricks and techniques for using terrain and snares to include pit traps.

Good for you. That was also the Boy Scouts when I grew up. All of the Troops in my small town were affiliated with a local church and were very patriotic and conservative, and taught real life skills and camping skills to young boys. I remember a camp with a 1 mile swim at 6:00 a.m. in freezing water. Can any of you on this message board do that today? I think not.

Our camp theme song at Camp Coker in Society Hill, SC back in the 1970s was a lampoon of modern Scouting…
“Young Folks, Old Folks, Ev’rybody Come (Where?)
Come To Coker And Have A Lot Of Fun (How?)
Ladies, Leave Your Knives And Razors At The Door, And Hear Some Bible Stories That You Never Heard Before”.

Ever since SCOTUS legalized same sex marriage, it has been open to anybody, regardless orientation, for good or bad. Its up to parents to do their own due diligence on the troop leaders and members before allowing their kid to join. Its all voluntary association.

IMO the key is not to just drop off your child. Scouting is an organization that requires Parental involvement not some absentee Parenting attitude using Scouting meetings or trips as ‘date night’.

Exactly right. When my son joined some of the kids he went to school with had older brothers in the same troop, so I knew some of the parents but none of the leaders. So I became an assistant scoutmaster and went on campouts and stuff. I enjoyed them but part of it was to just observe and see if I felt I could leave my son alone with them. After a yr or so I would skip a campout now and then and was only going because I enjoyed it because I had gotten to know the leaders and seen firsthand how they treated the scouts.

Some folks mistakenly insist upon believing that homosexuality equals paedophilia. Lots of seemingly trustworthy, heterosexual men and increasingly women have betrayed their position of trust and authority to prey upon underage children. IMO the refusal to acknowledge the clear distinction between same sex attraction and those attracted to children simply helps mask the true problem; adult paedophiles preying upon children.

It’s a shame that people conflate child molestation with homosexuality.

I would be more concerned that a female teacher would molest my sons, or a male teacher molesting my daughter, than I would a homosexual molesting any child.

But the LGBTQ+ community does not help when they do things that point to grooming our youth.

Transsexuals like Dylan Mulvaney on a platform that targets youth, Drag shows for children at libraries, and much more.

The boys and men in the current sexual abuse lawsuit against ‘Scouting America’ are male, and they have taken action against the organization that thought it was a good idea to allow homosexual men without children to be scout leaders.

        All males involved in this.

Why do so many equate pedophilia with homosexuality?

Because there is a tendency among homosexuals towards something that looks a whole lot like it.

Not all, but enough that the near universal disgust that predominates about the subject among heterosexuals simply isn’t there.

Back in the ’80s, we were good friends with old-fashioned conservative neighbors who (as far as I could figure out) were something between Jefferson-type Deist and unchurched. They were looking for a Scouting-type training experience for their two boys, but without the “hard stop” at the end of Second Class(?) where you had to profess your religious faith or drop out. Camp Fire was something like that, but at the time was girls only. The closest alternative then was a new group who were greenie eco-warriors, equally unacceptable to them. (I don’t remember the name, but it was similar to what Outdoor Service Guides appears to be today.) The remaining groups were all more like grooming orgs, all with a hobbyhorse of their own to flog that had nothing to do with outdoorsmanship, leadership, self-reliance, responsibility, and character-building.

Today, there are groups like Navigators, Camp Quest, and the coed Camp Fire that seem designed to fill that market niche. And on the other hand, there are a number of “aggressively Christian” alternative groups founded to eat Scouting’s lunch from the other side of the sandwich.

Can’t be very ‘inclusive’ if nobody is a member anymore.

In 2010 they still had almost 3 million members.

Now they’re barely breaking 1 million.

As an organization they are effectively irrelevant.

Missing from the articles covering this is the fact that in 2018/2019 the LDS church cut ties with the Boy Scouts due to their embrace of evil ideology.

In other words, Boy Scouts lost between 1.25 to 2 million paying members (and millions of unpaid volunteers) to increase membership by a measly 125 thousand. It is no wonder they filed bankruptcy, and the new leadership is doubling down on the stupidity. The organization will probably be dead in a decade.

My boys got out of BSA around 10 years ago. They didn’t understand why they were going to let girls join. There were already Girl Scouts. Why couldn’t girls join that instead? They thought it was stupid to let girls in.

It was right around the time new handbooks started arriving. BSA was one of the few places left where boys could just be boys. Once it was clear they had lost interest we let them quit. We weren’t going to let our kids be someone’s social experiment.

Four generations of my family have been Eagle Scouts. Thank God they were able to accomplish that before the BSA turned into a complete farce, and then renamed itself.

We’ll have to train the next generation of Eagles ourselves.

Silver bullet, garlic and a wooden stake in its heart. I no longer recognize “scouting” as wholesome, civil, warranted, or worthy of recognition.

There is no reason why local groups cannot still operate and carry on in the tradition of scouting, just abandon the “national” organization. Make your own cookies, sell them for a believable price and retain the funds for local use in carrying out troop activities.

The only institution that the leftists haven’t destroyed with t their touch is Marxism.

The media, academia, government, churches, youth organizations, science, hell, even math is racist somehow!

Meanwhile, kids in other countries are zooming past our students with rigorous testing and an ideology of merit. Sure, they have their problems too, but they aren’t importing more from use.

the front lines will not be “girl friendly”

how does that translate to the working environment where competition is like warfare?

My question isn’t, “Who cares?”, though that’s my initial reaction, as the BSA (or whatever — the “SA” now? That’ll go over well when TSHTF… little khaki shirt All-American (kinda) (maybe boys, maybe girls, maybe who knows wtf?) SA troops runnin’ around standing up for some set of values…)
Anyway, …since the BSA has been sold out and heading in the direction of DEI before that was even what we came to know it as.

My question is: nowadays, where does one find the caliber of healthy, red-blooded, hot-dog-and-apple pie-eating, lemonade-drinking, baseball-playing, American young man / future leader, which used to be equated with one who earned the title Eagle Scout?

Aspiring employers want to know.
