U.S. Airman Dies From Self-Immolation ‘Protest’ Outside Israeli Embassy In DC

Final video: “I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people in Palestine have been experiencing at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all.”

This is a tragic story. A young man—Aaron Bushnell, 25, and reportedly an active duty member of Biden’s woke Air Force—set himself on fire to protest “genocide” in Palestine.

The tragedy of this story lies not only in his senseless suicide but in the apparent and severe indoctrination this young man suffered, the lies he was told and believed about Hamas, about the Middle East, about, of course, Israel.

The Jerusalem Post reports:

A man in US military fatigues set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC on Sunday, in protest of what he called a “genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza.

The protester was identified on Sunday by the independent journalist Talia Jane as Aaron Bushnell, 25, an active-duty service member of the US Air Force, who, from a public LinkedIn profile, appeared to work in the service’s IT department.

Late Sunday night, Jane reported that Bushnell had succumbed to the wounds sustained in the self-immolation.

. . . . A video posted by the journalist showed Bushnell identifying himself before lighting himself ablaze.

“I am an active duty member of the US Air Force,” he said, “and I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people in Palestine have been experiencing at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all.[“]

“This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal,” he added.

The man then doused himself in what was presumably gasoline and set himself on fire, shouting “Free Palestine!” as he went up in flames. After almost a minute, several men responded to the incident, using fire extinguishers to attempt to put out the blaze.

Listen as he walks to his chosen place for his final act of . . . [fill in the blank].

It’s difficult to watch on so many levels, and while pro-Hamas rape and death cultists are celebrating Bushnell’s misguided self-immolation, others have more balanced views.

If the above tweet does not show for you (this is a problem I’ve encountered before), here it is (click to embiggen):

It’s almost surreal that this is happening in America and by an active duty member of our armed forces, but as I noted, others are more circumspect in their response to this senseless suicide.

Darwin Winner of the Year

I think of a video I once saw of a young man setting himself ablaze in protest of nuclear arms and realizing his choice was instantaneous. He sought flight after refusing to fight which fanned the flames into an inescapable inferno. The sight of his limbs constricting after writhing in agony completely drained my sympathy tank of empathy for such behavior.
Clearing the gene pool, boss.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | February 26, 2024 at 1:54 pm

I’m not sure why anyone feels sympathy towards this nut. We are only lucky that he decided to kill only himself and not become a suicide bomber, like his beloved Fakestinians idolize. But … maybe more of the leftists will take his lead.

I remember some years back when a chick around here set herself on fire at Penn during an off-year election. She was a weirdo who used to hang out on the Penn campus doing some weird dance. No one cared and her story was quickly forgotten by most. No one even knew what the hell she was “protesting”.

Here’s to more leftists self-immolating. Their final carbon release. Good riddance.

    Your empathy is astounding

He clearly has mental issues of the highest order

    His family must be devastated

He was wrong about everything and he was so young

Give me a break. You could say the same thing about any leftist.

He wasn’t so young. The guy was 25, already. He chose to kill himself. He chose to kill himself to promote an idiotic and anti-Western idea. He chose to kill himself in support of some of the most savage murderers on the planet. As I wrote, we are only lucky that he decided to just take himself out and not any of us. Would your heart still be bleeding for him, then?

        No, I won’t give you a break

I am sorry that we coddle and encourage mental illness like this. I am more worried on what it portrays for the rest of us in the future.

I glad he didn t take anyone else with him clearly
Yet, I can mourn for what happened, feel for his family
There was so many things that had to go wrong in his life to believe this was a worthwhile decision

I think most people on this blog understand how I feel
About Hamas, Palestinians and Muslims in general

        They are evil incarcerate

Here an American , young soldier cooks himself for What? For Allah? For being a most horrible of horrible “White man?

His lack of knowledge about the ME, Israel and history in general is so appalling that it led him to do this?

As a mother of a liberal son, who thank God doesn’t have any political leanings to Speak of …

I mourn for his life and his families and if you can’t understand that, then hand in your humanity card

I have sympathy for civilians and their families in the middle of a war from either side of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

I don’t reserve any of that sympathy for an IT clerk in the first world that chooses to light themselves on fire, fatigues or no fatigues.

We can mourn for him, feel for his family, and still be angry at the awful, immoral propagandists in this country that suckered him in. It’s like the scene in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brody” — where her student tells her about that stupid, vapid girl that, inspired by Miss Jean Brody, ran off to join the Spanish Revolution — and died shortly after joining the wrong side.

How could you possibly feel for his family? Those scumbags raised a fanatical machine when they should have raised a child.

The family will answer for their horrendousness to god some day.

          Don’t believe me?

The worst sacrifice college students willingly make for Hamas is to skip a meal once in awhile.

They don’t even self harm let alone kill themselves.

Sorry to break it to you but this one can not be blamed on K-12, University Indoctrination, Hollywood, Corporate America, or Leftist media, his family deliberately raised a rabid fanatic.

Danny, we don’t know anything about his family, or how they raised him. People don’t usually turn out the way their parents imagined, and sometimes they turn out very different.

My sympathy is all used up feeling for the innocent people dying from drunk drivers, cancer, etc. Friend entered the hospital today with a heart attack. I don’t have any left over to spill on people who choose to self-immolate – particularly in support of Hamas!

What I feel is anger that his mind was so infested with the monstrous claptrap that is being palmed off as education and the elevation of feelings as the most appropriate way to respond to the world as it is.

Yes, it’s tragic for him and his loved ones, but this didn’t happen in a vacuum. He was taught that his ignorance is righteous and that goals may be accomplished by empty gestures and extremist acts.

He saw himself as heroic and made his choice. It’s a sad commentary in many ways, but the real tragedy is larger and more profound than his meaningless suicide.

Why is it that they fuzz out the guy burning himself? There is already a notice you have to click to even see the video. What is the point of showing the video and fuzzing that out? That is the whole point of the video.

It’s sort of funny that the guy keeps yelling at him to “Get on the ground!” I guess there’s not much you can say at that point …

Had he lived, he would have been court-martialed under Article 92, Failure to Obey DoD Directive 1334.10, the prohibition on making political statements in uniform. You probably shouldn’t douse yourself in gasoline to make political points. But, if you’re a uniformed service member subject to the UCMJ, you definitely can’t do it in uniform.

healthguyfsu in reply to TargaGTS. | February 26, 2024 at 3:02 pm

Yeah, he found a fool-proof plan to circumvent the court martial.

Even dying, there should be a Line Of Duty determination made that would deny him any of the benefits of dying while active duty that normally pertain.

Unfortunately, he’s still eligible for up to $500K in SGLI coverage…depending if he’s enrolled (service members automatically are) and the level of coverage he selected. SGLI is one of the few insurance policies that pays out even in cases of suicide.

TargaGTS in reply to ConradCA. | February 28, 2024 at 10:45 am

Yes, UCMJ Article 134: Self Injury, Without Intent to Avoid Service. If you attempt self-harm in order to avoid service, that opens up other, more serious charges.

After monks in Vietnam. A hunger strike is easier.

You could call this guy a lone nut and loon, but, I think his misguided beliefs are symptomatic of a deeper rot within the U.S. Armed Forces, and, our intelligence apparatus, caused by the Dhimmi-crats’ utterly corrosive agitprop and indoctrination. Similar to that non-Muslim CIA employee who gleefully posted pro-Hamas posts on her social media.

Following the lead of the utterly vile, subversive and treasonous John Brennan, Mark Milley and Lloyd Austin, these are all brass and rank-and-file employees who have gullibly swallowed anti-U.S., anti-Israel and pro-Muslim supremacist/Islamofascist propaganda. They have no business wearing the uniform or serving in national security/intelligence agency positions.

“I am pleased to announce my nomination of four-star Gen. Mark Milley, chief of Staff of the United States Army — as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing Gen. Joe Dunford, who will be retiring,. I am thankful to both of these incredible men for their service to our Country!”

guyjones in reply to JR. | February 26, 2024 at 3:15 pm

President Trump making a misguided appointment of Milley, doesn’t excuse Milley’s obnoxious and stupid Leftist ethos and attitudes, nor, his subversive and treasonous insubordination in consorting with his Chinese communist counterpart and assuring him that he, Milley, would give him advance warning of any U.S. attack.

It’s Milley and the pervasive Leftist rot within DoD that’s at issue, here. But, sure, focus obsessively and myopically on Trump.

Milhouse in reply to guyjones. | February 26, 2024 at 10:18 pm

Whether that promise to the Chinese was treasonous or patriotic depends on whether he intended to carry it out. Assuming he had no such intention, it was a good idea, but he should have cleared it with Trump first.

Remember the context: China was worried that Trump was about to attack it, and was arming up to counter it. Milley wanted to assure the Chinese that there was no such plan, and get them to stand down. So he promised them that should he get such an order he’d give them warning. That seems like a good thing to do; after all, he knew that Trump had no intention of ever giving such an order, so he would never have to decide whether to make good on his promise. The issue would simply never come up. But he shouldn’t have taken it on himself; he should have asked the commander-in-chief’s permission.

To be brutally honest, there were persons I thought would be outstanding appointments, until I watched them in action. Considering the glowing recommendations they had, as well as the substantial qualifications, I have been baffled at the way they turned out.

Could we stop with the “Trump is a genius and perfect politician when I think his choice was good but a fool a child whenever he made a bad choice”?

Furthermore Mark Millley was never supposed to be a Louis XIV figure within the military, that honor goes ONLY to the president. Suppose Mark Miley is every bit of evil you just said he was.

Who is supposed to be providing oversight? I think it is the president.

The primary is over, I am voting Trump. I have enough integrity to not defend doing a horrible job overseeing the military.

Yet Milley was one of the choices that Trump had available to him for nomination. Suggested by and for the people who Trump trusted. One who quickly decided it was in his best interest to notify the Chinese if Trump made any decision that went against Milley’s dedication to an organization and not his CinC.

So give it a break. It’s not like Trump could have reached down and bypassed the entire officer corps and select, say, a Chief Master Sergeant with years of service dedicated to an American Constitution.

You act as if you have never made a bad decision in your life, or made a decision to select someone who then acted to undermine you at every turn.

You should be so lucky that anyone in America would select you for anything, let alone the presidency. You don’t have the chops for it, and yet you stand in the shadows and make idiotic pronouncements daily.

Maybe Bushnell is the person you should emulate.

It’s not a rot within our military and intelligence services.
It’s a rot within our society, as a whole. It’s the rot of Progressive religion being slowly, but inexorably, infiltrated into academia, government, and our entertainment. The warping of Christian virtues into Progressive ones, making self the ultimate god and the State its manifestation.

They want to destroy the richest and fairest country in the world so they can create their fascist utopia. A utopia that is identical in every significant effect as the utopias created by the Nazis, Communists, and Muslims and just as evil.

healthguyfsu in reply to jqusnr. | February 26, 2024 at 3:03 pm

I’d say no. Most life insurance policies do not cover suicide.

SGLI doesn’t cover you if your actions were outside “Line Of Duty.” That doesn’t mean you’re not covered under ordinary life circumstances. But it does mean that if you were in pursuit of something other than your duty (protest, extreme sports, criminal activity, etc.) then it will not pay out. Suicide happens to be one of those items that are normally considered outside LOD.

        AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to GWB. | February 27, 2024 at 7:30 am

        Incorrect.

Directly from a family member’s SGLI policy document.

“SGLI will not deny payment based on misconduct of the
insured or in the case of suicide.”

It best not. A Line Of Duty determination would prevent that, as he was in violation of several UCMJ elements while killing himself (which, in and of itself, is a LOD finding that will strip your benefits). His SGLI is for his death in the line of duty.

TargaGTS in reply to GWB. | February 26, 2024 at 4:45 pm

FWIW, LOD is only used for military health care benefits (Tricare) and some other benefits. SGLI is excluded from an LOD examination. For example, for the last 20-years (at least), even qualifying reservists/National Guardsman are eligible for full-time SGLI coverage.

      AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to GWB. | February 27, 2024 at 7:32 am

      Not true.

SGLI pays if the insured dies. The only denial of payment is if the insured is AWOL for more than 30 days.

To say it is only paid in a LOD death is to say it won’t pay for a car accident that leads to death.

A car accident is in Line Of Duty as long as the member wasn’t DUI or driving recklessly.
SGLI and LOD certainly aren’t what they used to be.

(SGLI was originally denied to a friend of mine’s family because she died after falling asleep at the wheel, returning to duty. That was pre-90’s.)

That just makes muzzie supporters look wack.

Interesting that he would chose the same way Hamas killed many of their victims to protest Israel.

It sounds to me like the problem has solved itself. Surprising the guy had a high enough IQ to even get into the Air Force.

After watching the video I have to call this fake. Blurring it out is the first clue. Second clue is the yelling of “Free Palestine”. I guess I just don’t give a (you know), flying or otherwise. I am concerned about Jill Stein’s response though. I think all of these bleeding hearts for Hamas, need to be drop shipped to Gaza so they can join their cause.

This is a story solely concerning mental illness. In the 1970s lefties and “tribal” head doctors decided to de institutionalize the mentally ill. Ever since then they have been allowed to walk among us. This is no more a political story than the mass shooting incidents.

I do not believe that this man did not exhibit enough bizarre behaviors in his life that a more just, sane and caring society would not have committed him for treatment.

We kill the innocent, glorify the deviant and neglect the truly needy.

Nope. It wasn’t mental illness – at least not any more than with any cult follower.
The problem is that cult is monstrously large and is mainstream, having taken over most of our culture. He was spouting the received wisdom – the dogma – of his belief system: Progressivism.

This young man was lucky not to survive. Burns are the worst. Even if survivable. There is something desperately wrong in this country that so many twenty-somethings are supporting barbaric Hamas. They are apparently sick of civilization. Which is amusing, given these cowards, who insist words are weapons, are in no way prepared to defend themselves outside the rules of a polite society.

I suspect his brainwashing from the Cultural Marxists blaming Israel for the Hamas attack.

democrat lies killed this man

I actually support his right to do this along with all the other Palestinian supporters.

While I do feel sympathy for the young man and those he left behind, because it is a sign of our failure as a society to treat mental illness as an actual illness anymore. Instead we have let so called “enlightened, educated zealots shift the definition of dangerous mental illness from something that needs treatment into some “social problem” that is never the fault of the person or the illness, but is instead the fault of (insert excuse here).

The next thing we will hear is the common line of how people “saw signs” of this young man’s mental decline, but never any reason why those signs were ignored.

Then will come the finding of his social media which should have been a blatiant clue, but was never seen because his insane ravings fit the narrative.

Well it probably won’t actually go that far because this story will be buried and ignored quickly as to not defame the service or some such BS.

Here’s the rules for SGLI payout.

Controversially, the Army decided not to charge Hasan with terrorism.

Prior to the shooting, an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) concluded Hasan’s email correspondence with the late Imam Anwar al-Awlaki were related to his authorized professional research and he was not a threat. The FBI, Department of Defense (DoD) and United States Senate all conducted investigations after the shootings.[9] The Senate released a report describing the shooting as “the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001”.[10][11]

R.I.F.

Rest in Foolishness

P.S. Trying to be as empathetic as I can.

At 25 you are responsible for yourself, your political opinions are your own, and your suicide may be tragic but if you kill yourself because you can’t live in a world where Hamas doesn’t win that is as much on you as if you killed yourself over loneliness (a very common source of suicide which I find significantly more tragic).

The institution that was responsible for failing this adult was his family. Leftist families do not normally produce people who kill themselves (actually they can’t even produce people capable of a hunger strike; the “hunger strikes” of college campuses are just skipping lunch once in awhile).

This may sound harsh on his family, and judging the people most impacted so just ask yourself.

The Hamas loving college student….how many of them killed themselves so far in support of Hamas?

My diagnosis for society is very harsh on public institutions, especially public schools of k-12, it was not public schools that did it, public school has raised a generation of people who fear death above all else and is extremely vulnerable to safetyism as a result.

This man was made a fanatic by his family.

Good riddance to another Hamas sympathizer.!

Reading this story, as horrible but intentional as it is, reminded me of a scene from the 1987 film, “Full Metal Jacket.”

In the movie, the night before the graduating Marine recruits leave Parris Island, Joker, who is on fire watch duty, discovers Pyle in the barracks latrine loading his service rifle with live ammunition, executing drill commands, and loudly reciting the Rifleman’s Creed.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman is awoken by the commotion and attempts to intervene, but Pyle shoots and kills him before committing suicide.

One fewer genocidal anti-semite.

Bonus: He didn’t “suicide by cop” while shooting up innocent people at a school, church, or mall.

So, he’s head and shoulders above the typical liberal these days.

I’m not seeing a downside here.

Guys his age usually don’t like to read, but somehow they form political opinions. Many of them absolutely will not try to read both sides of the story.

Thanks for the link! I had seen he was some kind of nut, but I didn’t know how far gone. My point stands, of course, this is down to indoctrination and utter leftist/Democrat crazy.

These days, being antifa probably earns a recruitment bonus. The only “dangerous” “extremists” they are worried about are straight, white, male patriots. They’ve made that abundantly clear.

You assume Antifa would be a disqualifying association. Perhaps you’re thinking of the traditional Catholic Church, or the NRA. Membership in Antifa these days is counted like time in OCS.

As a human, I feel sorry for the family members who will have to live with the grief for the rest of their lives.
