Report: Alexei Navalny, a Vocal Putin Critic, Dies in Prison
Navalny’s team has not confirmed his death.
Russian authorities said famous Putin critic Alexei Navalny died on Friday:
Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most famous opposition leader, died on Friday after collapsing and losing consciousness at the penal colony north of the Arctic Circle where he was serving a long jail term, the Russian prison service said.
Navalny, 47, rose to prominence more than a decade ago by lampooning President Vladimir Putin and the Russian elite whom he accused of vast corruption, avarice and opulence.
Authorities placed Navalny in the IK-3 penal colony known as “Polar Wolf,” located in Kharp, which is above the Arctic Circle:
Navalny, who was serving a 19-year sentence on charges of extremism, felt unwell after a walk, according to the Federal Penitentiary Service, and lost consciousness. An ambulance arrived to try to revive him, but he died. It said the cause of death was “being established.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was informed of Navalny’s death and the prison service would look into it in line with standard procedures.
Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the politician’s team had no confirmation of his death so far and that his lawyer was traveling to the town where he was held.
Navalny went to prison in 2021 when he returned from Germany after recovering from a nerve agent poisoning. He blamed Putin and his cronies for the poisoning:
A year later, on Aug. 20, 2020, he became severely ill on a flight to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk, where he was organizing opposition candidates. He collapsed in the aisle while returning from the bathroom, and the plane made an emergency landing in the city of Omsk, where he spent two days in a hospital while supporters begged doctors to allow him to be taken to Germany for treatment.
Once in Germany, doctors determined he had been poisoned with a strain of Novichok – similar to the nerve agent that nearly killed former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England in 2018 and resulted in the death of another woman.
Navalny was in a medically induced coma for about two weeks, then labored to recover speech and movement for several more weeks. His first communication while recovering showed his defiant wit — an Instagram post saying that breathing on one’s own is “a remarkable process that is underestimated by many. Strongly recommended.”

Putin is a horrible person who treats his enemies – foreign & domestic – in a manner consistent with any other horrible dictator. You know who else treats his enemies in a similar manner? Xi Jinping. And yet, no one – absolutely no one – in government or media has a peep to say about it. Xi gets treated to state dinners and favorable trade agreements. Gavin Newsom traveled to China apparently to blow him.
I still remain FAR more concerned with the growing threat of China than I am about Russia and its sociopath leader, Vladimir Putin. Putin could assume room temperature tomorrow and if the US played its cards correctly (unlike how we behaved post-Soviet Union), Russia could be an ally, or at least a non-belligerent. If Xi falls off the face of the earth this afternoon, China will still be the threat it’s always been.

Let Navalny’s death be a warning to America. If returned to power, Donald Trump will jail his opponents. This isn’t a forecast, he has already told us this. There will be no evidence or due process. And certainly no opposition from Republicans in Congress.

If you take a step back… how is his imprisonment different than the J6 defendants? Both are in for the same reason — the criminalization of speech and petitioning government for redress. But those are constitutional rights here so in many respects Biden is worse than Putin.

He was thrown in prison for being a dissident and daring to run against the dictator. He died in a frozen penal colony. Security cameras failed apparently. This is 100% attributable to Putin.

No. Gonzalo Lira was not a journalist. He videos Ukraine troop movements and put them on Russian Telegram channels. He was “arrested” and released. Then he tried to flee so they had to detain him. He apparently died in the hospital after an escape attempt.
This is sad news. Navalny exhibited true courage. One wishes he hadn’t returned to Russia and had continued his dissident activity from abroad.
I have read many posts on Truth Social that it would be better if Putin were President of the United States instead of Biden. Think about that for a moment. If Putin were President, then Trump would have been killed a long time ago. All Republicans in the House and Senate would have been killed or sent to a Gulag in Siberia. Fox News, Legal Insurrection, and all other conservative media outlets would be banned. Yet Trump supporters continue to post that there is no difference between Russia and the United States, and that Putin would be better than Biden. We have entered the world of madness.
