“It is with a strong sense of responsibility and purpose..”

Virtue that goes public turns into the worst sort of evil, so you know right away not to vote for this one.

    Cute … but stupid.

I am not in favor of Scalise for the position but this is not certainly not a reason not to vote for the guy.

It’s from Hannah Arendt, about the trick of the Nazis. Virtue and ideals were everywhere. It was based on common decencies, family, kindness to animals. The head of the Tierschutzverein, the humane society, was Hermann Goering.

      From Levinas:

The diabolical is endowed with intelligence and enters where it will. To reject it, it is first necessary to refute it. Intellectual effort is needed to recognize it. Who can boast of having done so? Say what you will, the diabolical gives food for thought.

It’s from Hannah Arendt, about the trick of the Nazis.

        Proving my point.

Do you think the trick doesn’t work in the US?

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to ThePrimordialOrderedPair. | October 4, 2023 at 3:36 pm

I think your initial claim is stupid (that all virtue going public turns evil) and you are too dumb to even understand what you are saying.

The Nazis were always evil, no matter how they portrayed themselves, the same way that the left is evil, no matter how it tries to portray itself.

Scalise saying that he has a “strong sense of responsibility and purpose” is likely accurate and has nothing to do with evil lying lowlifes like the Nazis or the America-hating left/Democrats.

The whole point is self-delusion, as if you’re such a good person that opposition is evil. If it helps, think of Mitt Romney, the most virtuous person alive. Or John McCain, who never did anything that didn’t help his career.

So, just slightly better than “it’s for the children.”

      Agree.

You should never use a platitude as your reason for or against anything. Quotables are fun but too limited to account for the full picture of reality.

At the end of the day all that matters is being willing to use the tools of the office and levers of power to get the agenda of the voters across the finish line in the HoR. Let the Senate worry about whether they choose to pass or defeat the appropriations bills sent to them by the HoR. Let the WH worry about whether they will sign or VETO what lands on their desk. Stop worrying about what others entities may or may not do and focus on getting things passed that are acceptable to voters who sent a GoP majority to the HoR.

WTPuck in reply to CommoChief. | October 4, 2023 at 2:24 pm

    Very well said.

CommoChief in reply to WTPuck. | October 4, 2023 at 3:11 pm

      Thanks!

On a related note Sen John Cornyn, Establishment, TX has decided to label the ouster of McCarthy from the Office of Speaker as ‘terrorism’. DC Establishment is jumping the shark in outrage which only reinforces the idea that this ouster of McCarthy by a populist oriented bloc of representatives was justified.

Ignore the establishment. Ignore the Senate. Ignore the WH. All the HoR GoP majority needs to focus on is what is acceptable to the voters who gave.them a majority. Hint; worrying about whether the lefty d/prog in Congress and the WH like it or what trash the lefty corporate media will say or whether you get blacklisted from the DC cocktail party circuit is NOT why the voters handed y’all a majority.

Control the things in your power to control and force the other entities to decide to pass, defeat or Veto what comes out of the HoR. It’s not your responsibility what they do or fail to do. Y’all are only responsible and hopefully held accountable for what you choose to do and what you fail to do.

Townhall has an article up with the headline “The Democrats Won” as if the democrats haven’t been winning the last 2.5 decades.

geronl in reply to Paddy M. | October 4, 2023 at 5:40 pm

If 5 unhappy Republican abstain from the Speaker vote, Hakeem Jefferies becomes Speaker. That will all be on Matt Gaetz.

CommoChief in reply to Paddy M. | October 4, 2023 at 6:51 pm

Nope. It’s on the establishment goons and neocons who failed to make peace with populist bloc and prevent the need to detonate the grenade. They didn’t take the lessons of the turmoil to select a Speaker to heart. Thought the same old song and dance BS excuses would fly this time as well.

The establishment and the neocons were forced to hand over this grenade to the populist bloc during very public back and forth selection for Speaker for the purpose of keeping the establishment and neocons honest. Precisely b/c the populist bloc didn’t trust them not to ‘pull the football’ again.

The current reality is that the balance of power in the GoP conference, which itself holds majority power in the HoR, is in the hands of the populist bloc.

For now that power doesn’t reside in the hands of the establishment, the neocons or moderate/suburban CD representatives. The establishment and neocons are losing their minds b/c they have, for now, lost the ability to direct appropriations and jam through BS concessions by creating an ’emergency’ ignore regular order, jam through a CR followed by a bloated omnibus spending package that rewards their lobbyist buddies at the expense of normal, hardworking, taxpaying GoP voters.

        AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to CommoChief. | October 4, 2023 at 4:06 pm

        Correct.

The power of the purse rests solely with the HoR. Their job is to pass the bills that they are Constitutionally required to pass. Nothing more.

If the rest of the bunch refuse to accept it, what are they going to do, cry or hold their breath?

Then the bill doesn’t get passed.

At least the HoR can say we send the bills to the Senate, and the Senate refuses to pass them.

        Result? Shut the place down.

Of course, if bills were passed and funded individually, then certain parts of the government would get funded. The rest won’t.

Will I cray if Education, Housing and Urban Development, or other agencies get shut down? Nope.

        txvet2 in reply to CommoChief. | October 4, 2023 at 5:43 pm

I stopped paying attention to Cornyn when he moved hard left. I still think that he plans to retire. I don’t see him getting re-elected in Texas.

          CommoChief in reply to txvet2. | October 4, 2023 at 6:37 pm

Supposedly he is being passed over as the heir to be head of the establishment wing in the Senate to replace McConnell when he retires. This despite his many years of boot licking so he in fairness to him he may be a little salty about it. Looks like Thune, SD then Barrasso, WY with Cornyn falling to second alternate.

Gotta hand it the establishment they ID Sen from deep red States, throw $, prestigious committee assignments and powerful pasty positions at them. They hand select and groom them up. All from basically unbeatable States so they remain in place and make the investment worthwhile. Until their wheels fall off like McConnell’s anyway. Then it is next man up.

gonzotx in reply to CommoChief. | October 5, 2023 at 12:31 am

        Cornyn he’s gone full Monty

        Never go full retard Cornyn

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | October 5, 2023 at 9:05 am

Yeah. Those of us in red States gotta do a better job of selecting and supporting Candidates in the primaries who will represent our policy preferences v DC Establishment preferences.

It’s very tough to do that if we don’t have a good set of choices in the primary when an open seat presents itself. Once a mediocre candidate wins and becomes an incumbent it is next to impossible to remove them. The structural advantages of incumbency are are very tough to overcome.

That’s how we got stuck with folks like Cornyn and Graham in the Senate. The silver lining is the mood of the electorate has moved towards a more populist viewpoint and the advanced age of many Senators and Reps will cause turnover as they retire or like Feinstein die in office.

    ^^^^THIS^^^^

    Thank you Chief! Thank you.

I would have thought that given this guys been shot up by crazed Democrats he might be one of the more dependable ones??

Ironclaw in reply to mailman. | October 4, 2023 at 2:22 pm

You would have thought that Kavanaugh would be a bit more of a hard-liner as well, wouldn’t you, considering how much the communist tried to destroy him. Most of his rulings haven’t been that good.

Peabody in reply to Ironclaw. | October 4, 2023 at 3:04 pm

      He has not claws.

Milhouse in reply to Ironclaw. | October 5, 2023 at 8:50 pm

You’d only have thought that if you thought he was less than honest, that he would allow his rulings to be swayed by his personal feelings and would not give his enemies the same justice as his friends.

Kavanaugh is an honest justice, and votes as he understands the law to actually be, as best as he can make it out. He’s only human, so of course he has feelings and they may occasionally affect his judgment, but it’s his job to avoid that as much as possible, and if in some case he finds that he can’t avoid it then it’s his job to recuse himself.

It’s the left who think everyone really agrees with them, and anyone who opposes their policies must have some private reason why he’s doing so; perhaps he’s been bought, or perhaps he’s motivated by hatred or bigotry or bloodlust, but never because he honestly believes in what he’s saying. Leftists certainly can’t believe that anyone would oppose their policies against his own interest. Hence their perplexity at such puzzles as “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” It can’t be that Kansans vote the way they do because they actually believe differently from the left.

gonzotx in reply to mailman. | October 4, 2023 at 3:08 pm

One would have thought… but you would have thought wrong

    He is McCarthy

Being shot at as if you are a conservative doesn’t actually mean you are conservative.

Scalise is too much an Establishment RINO.

Nathan Shiba in reply to ChrisPeters. | October 4, 2023 at 2:23 pm

I’m not sure I could have imagined a less thoughtful, spite-filled comment.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to Nathan Shiba. | October 4, 2023 at 2:49 pm

That wasn’t a spiteful comment. And the issue of Scalise having been shot by democrats is not any sort of a touchy issue. If anything, it has been allowed to quickly disappear into the ether when it was really a monumental event that all democrats should have had to answer for for years.

Now, one can say that Scalise rising to the Speakership could bring that back into focus and force the dems to answer for it … over and over and over. Chris is just saying, however, that Scalise is not that conservative, which few would argue with.

Thank you. I suspect Nathan failed to fully understand my comment. I would not condone the shooting of ANYONE, not even Bernie Sanders, for whom the man who fired the shots at Scalise was a supporter.

My point was that the while the shooting was tragic and a sign of a meaningful downturn in civility in this country, it by no means indicated that Scalise’s governing philosophy is conservative.

Gosport in reply to ChrisPeters. | October 4, 2023 at 4:20 pm

    Scalise’s conservative voting scorecard @ heritageaction.com is 82%,

Which is exactly the same as Jim Jordan’s.

If someone thinks differently please provide your metrics for comparison.

Chris Peters says all kinds of dumb shit here on LI. Probably because he has never had any left-wing goon take a rifle and try to kill him because of his conservative Republican beliefs. But of course, why would anyone try to kill Chris Peters? Nobody on planet earth knows who the hell he is, and no one gives a damn about any opinion he posts on the Internet. So yeah, Chris, being shot at for what you believe in is no big fucking deal.

      txvet2 in reply to JR. | October 4, 2023 at 11:19 pm

Undeserved and unwarranted. I’m not on board with Scalise either for my own reasons, including his performance as majority leader and whip. You can, and should, do better. I know you take a lot of crap here, but you don’t have to spread it around. Be better than they are.

MajorWood in reply to ChrisPeters. | October 4, 2023 at 8:15 pm

If a democrat was doing the shooting, who knows what the actual target was.

Milhouse in reply to ChrisPeters. | October 5, 2023 at 8:56 pm

I don’t agree that Scalise is in any way a RINO. However it is true that his being shot doesn’t prove that. The shooter didn’t care what kind of Republican he was; he was out to shoot all Republicans, just as the Nazis were out to kill all Jews and didn’t care what kind of Jew someone was. JINOs were just as vulnerable as the most devout, and so were Jews who no longer even bore that name. They didn’t care; a Jew was a Jew regardless, and thus by inexorable nature a predatory vermin who had to be exterminated for humanity’s good. They didn’t even care whether Jewish law even considered someone a Jew; they had their own law, which they supposed to be based on “science” and “reason”.

So no, being the victim of someone who hates all X is no measure of how much of an X you are, or even whether you are an X at all.

Steven Brizel | October 4, 2023 at 3:29 pm

Scalise or Jordan are great candidates for speaker

I don’t have a problem with Jordan, but neither Scalise nor Emmer have been able to deliver in their jobs as majority leader and whip. I can’t see them being any more successful as Speaker.

    gonzotx in reply to txvet2. | October 5, 2023 at 12:25 am

That’s the reason they put them up for speaker

Not doing the job the American people put them in office to do

    SeiteiSouther in reply to txvet2. | October 5, 2023 at 10:16 am

As my rep, Scalise was too in step with McCarthy for my liking. So, I’d rather anybody else than him.

There is also the issue of his recent diagnosis with multiple myeloma, hardly a trivial condition.

This is all pointless. It’s probably going to be Hakeem Jefferies.

In true DC fashion instead of getting to work and electing a new Speaker they decide to go out of session until the middle of next week. Classic kick the can down the road mentality by the House.
In the meantime the 45 day clock on the CR keeps on running. Odds grow by the day that there will be the same hysteria in mid November..

    Paddy M in reply to buck61. | October 4, 2023 at 6:49 pm

And they just returned from recess.

    CommoChief in reply to buck61. | October 4, 2023 at 7:04 pm

Honestly it isn’t that big a deal beyond the hysteria the corporate media will flame with sob stories. On 1 Jan a budget with a 1% reduction foes into effect automatically if there isn’t a replacement. So really there’s just the need to clear up the several weeks between expiration of the current CR and 1 Jan. Pay the Troops and others who showed up to work and were not told to stay home b/c their dept/agency declared them ‘not essential’. If it were me I’d demand the list of non essential workers, total up their salaries and delete funding for their position. If their own bosses tell us these folks ain’t essential and we are in debt to our eyeballs, then get rid of them and use the cost savings to reduce the National Debt.

    gonzotx in reply to buck61. | October 5, 2023 at 12:24 am

No it’s to regroup, they were shocked McCarthy got the boot

Nothing good will come from this week”vacay”

    Milhouse in reply to buck61. | October 5, 2023 at 8:58 pm

In true DC fashion instead of getting to work and electing a new Speaker they decide to go out of session until the middle of next week.

With all the good will in the world, it would take them at least that long to decide who should get it. That can’t be decided in a day. And until it is decided the House can’t do any business.

Rearranging the deck chairs.
