Chicago Neighborhood Residents Explode Over Planned Migrant Camp

Residents of Brighton Park, located in southwest Chicago, lashed out at officials over a planned migrant camp.

Nobody asked or told them.

Residents say they only found out about the project when they recently spotted construction crews working at the site. The discovery led to protests, and on Monday, city officials confirmed their intent for the 10-acre vacant lot, located at 38th and California.

“The City of Chicago has been identifying viable sites across the city to construct base camps as an alternative to new arrivals sleeping outdoors, at O’Hare and on the floors of police district stations as winter fast approaches,” the statement from the mayor’s office reads. “The site at 38th and California appears viable, and the intention is to construct temporary shelter at this site.”

The city’s statement confirmed speculation that the site would become Mayor Brandon Johnson’s first “winterized base camp” – after neighbors noticed construction equipment there.

Ald. Julia Ramirez (12th Ward) only found out when people called her office about it: “I had reached out to the city and they verified that was the case and ever since then, I’ve been pushing the administration to be more open, more transparent about the details.”

Hardly anyone believed her:

A heated protest last Thursday left Ramirez and an aide battered by protesters who accused her of backing the plan without getting the community’s input first.

Ramirez vehemently denied those accusations in a letter shared Sunday evening on “X,” the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“The Mayor’s office did not consult with me or my office about their current plans to construct a temporary shelter — meant to house 1,500 people — at 38th & California,” Ramirez asserted in the letter.

The auditorium at Kelly College Preparatory High School filled up and some people couldn’t even get inside for a town meeting: “Nobody asked us, nobody told us. We have a few thousand people here who signed their signature and said ‘no!’ We said ‘no!’”

There are plenty of people who want to help the immigrants but it’s also almost winter:

Ada Zhu, 33, read a printed script to city officials: ”(This) clearly showed the mayor’s disrespect for our district. You are taking our rights away. This is not right.”

Julie Ganez, 60, who lives a block and a half from the site, said she is not against immigration, but she knows there are other spaces to house migrants.

Nosotros necesitamos seguridad. Hay que arreglar los problemas que tienen en casa. We need security. We should fix the problems we already have here,” she said in Spanish with the help of a translator.

Former alderman George Cardenas said the site has environmental concerns: ”That site is contaminated, otherwise we would have built houses there a long time ago.”

Another resident said, “We have concerns about our students, our children who walk on this street every day, how do we ensure their safety.”

The key point is that this is Democrat controlled Chicago. In Democrat controlled areas it is an axiom that the wishes and needs of hostile foreign invaders take absolute priority over the wishes and needs of citizens of both the city AND citizens of the country. It just is what it is.

      I had forgotten that event. The Democrat party ‘intersectional’ ladder will be out in plain view for everybody to see.

    If only they were so involved and discriminating about who they vote for.

    And the illegals need phones, phone plans with unlimited data, debit cards with new monthly balances of $5,000 per month and many other necessities.
    I suggest a bi fold plan. First, raise the property taxes by 20%, then add an extra dime to the sales tax. Should be a big help to keep the illegals feel like this is paradise.

      America cannot cheap out on our visitors. It will destroy our reputation around the world. We must add in free housing and change the $5000 to $10000. Also, free ESPN+. Our visitors need to follow their home teams in football.

    Now you know how we felt when nobody asked us before opening the entire southern border of our state, and continued to do it even after we told them no.

    Those people are about to learn what “elections have consequences” really means.
    What is that saying…”people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard”?
    They voted for it, they are going to get it but at least no mean tweets from oatmeal brains at 1600 Penn Ave.

    Not saying or implying anything here. Just quoting one of the founding documents. That is all.

The ‘vacant lot’ referenced in the story (NW corner of 38th and California) is bounded by train tracks and train sheds to the north. It was used to park containers and trailers. It’s surrounded on the other three sides by residential housing, all tightly packed single-family homes and two-flats. There is a fair bit of mixed use light industry in what is very much a working class neighborhood. So you can see why the Mayor would do this; these aren’t his constituents.

One important point — in Chicago’s 50 wards, each alderman also serves as zoning commissioner for their ward, and also has direct representation with Streets and Sanitation. Ald. Julia Ramirez’s statement that she “didn’t know” is simply not believable, as each alderman knows everything the city is doing in their ward. She not only knew, she signed off on it — had she not the Mayor simply would not have gone forward (he’d faced 50 angry alderman at the next council meeting concerned that their power and perks were being taken away, and no Chicago alderman allows that).

I gather it’s an upscale group. A downscale group would be worried about sharing benefits with newcomers.

Lots of Chicago inside baseball here. The Mayor is not only ignoring the people of the city, he’s ignoring the aldermen. The only thing saving him right now is that he’s the pet of the Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle (my former alder-critter), and the Chicago Teachers Union. We’ll see how long that lasts.

      The Chicago mayor seems like the most open black-racist communist I can remember in politics in my lifetime. Sure he wants to “interrupt” and intrude on quiet white neighborhoods, because he hates them. He gets a little thrill by damaging them.

    Prolly not. His election was with the help of 100+ % turnout by the teachers’ union. And surely SEIU and other usual suspects, but I heard the teachers’ union was important. Normal folks didn’t have a chance to avoid this guy. And turnout was probably not high because everyone assumed the other guy, just liberal not raging commie, would win.

      And as I’ve said before this is the time the Southern states need to double down on sending “migrants” to those cities and states that have declared themselves sanctuary cities and sanctuary states. Keep the pressure on them until the Biden regime comes up with a viable plan to close the southern border and prevent the thousands of illegals from crossing every day. Until then we should let the sanctuary cities like NYC and Chicago experience the joys of cultural diversity.

        NYC is hobbled by a consent decree. They people never voted for it, although they maybe did vote for politicians who intentionally got consent decree entered against the city so that lefty policies could never be stopped.

Migrant camps belong in their COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, period.
