Washington College Protesters Shout Down Conservative Princeton Prof’s Speech

“We have the power here to make our voices heard”

It’s the same story we have seen play out countless times. The authoritarian left doesn’t allow people to speak.

The College Fix reports:

Rowdy protesters shut down conservative Princeton professor’s ‘truth-seeking’ speech

Protesters at Washington College recently shouted down renowned conservative Princeton University Professor Robert George as he gave a guest speech titled “The Truth-Seeking Mission of the University.”

“Whistles blew loudly, echoing around the room. The protesters marched in, campus security allowing them passage. Shouting from the protesters started right away, breaking up the professor’s speech,” reported the Star Democrat on Sept. 10. “The protesters came into Hynson Lounge, waving flags and signs symbolizing LGBT pride, about halfway through George’s lecture. They wouldn’t stand down until it was canceled.”

“…Protesters holding signs gathered against the back wall chimed in occasionally, but mainly it was the two masked individuals leading the protest,” the newspaper reported, adding some faculty who tried to silence the protesters were unsuccessful. “Fast-tempo music began blaring, whistles constantly blew, and there was even a little dancing in between the tables.”

“We have the power here to make our voices heard,” a protester reportedly called out to the crowd. “Are you going to tell me that WAC (Washington College), can expel every single one of us? Absolutely (expletive) not!”

Brian Speer, a spokesman for Washington College, told The College Fix via email on Tuesday the protesters “took issue with homophobic and transphobic statements that Professor George has made in the past.”

“Prior to the event, the College declined requests to cancel the lecture and shared an email with campus that reinforced our institutional values for informed, critical inquiry and the exploration of a wide diversity of perspectives,” Speer told The Fix.

“The College provided a number of alternate activities and reminded students that it would be a violation of the Student Honor Code to disrupt a speaker. It is unfortunate that a very small group of students chose to disrupt the lecture,” he said.

He said the speech’s cancelation “is not consistent with the core values of the liberal arts to which Washington College is committed.”

From Washington College’s “Honor Code”

“each member of the community pledges to respect the ideas, well being, and property of others.”

“Students are expected to treat others with respect, dignity, and understanding; …”

It is ironic that the title of the speech was “The Truth-Seeking Mission of the University.”

The university needs to decide if they are going to seek truth or be ruled by the mob.

My 2-cents? Probation for all those that can be clearly identified as purposefully disrupting the speaker and preventing those who came to the lecture from hearing it.

Additionally, some repercussions for the campus security personnel who reportedly allowed the protestors to march in. They were either unprepared or complicit if they did not even try to prevent the disruption of an official event.

Protesting outside the venue? Absolutely, as long as the noise level is below what otherwise would be acceptable on the campus.

If the campus security can’t handle it, call in the local PD.

Yeah, the mob definitely would like that, but basic civility should be maintained. Those who choose civil disobedience are choosing civil penalties – otherwise it is mob rule.

Expulsion would be better. But the administration will do nothing because they know that any enforcement will be met with massive escalation by the leftists and their useful fools. When they say By Any Means Necessary, they really mean it.

Not probation — expulsion (without return of tuition paid). The only way they’ll learn the lesson.

Wink wink, nudge nudge, where’s my pearls?

Paintballs. Way more efficient and way more gratifying.

Friends don’t let friends have anything to do with this place, whatever its merits in the past may have been.

I had never heard of Washington College even though it was founded in 1782. It now has about 1,000 students and they accept 70% of their applicants. How sad.

I had never heard of this place. It’s in Maryland, not in Washington State. No doubt they will change their name because George owned slaves.

This is another college to add to our “DON’T SEND YOUR KIDS THERE!!” list.
