Italy Passes Tougher Measures as African Migrants Swarm Mediterranean Island

Reuters: “The move came after almost 10,000 migrants reached the southern Italian island of Lampedusa last week.”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government is taking steps to curb illegal immigration from North Africa after thousands of migrants swarmed the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa within a span of days, reducing the island’s native population of 6,000 to a minority.

“The Italian government, struggling with a surge in arriving migrants, on Monday passed measures to lengthen the time they can be detained and ensure more people who have no legal right to stay are repatriated, government officials said,” Reuters reported Monday. “The move came after almost 10,000 migrants reached the southern Italian island of Lampedusa last week,” the news agency added.

The videos circulating on social media show newly arrived migrants confronting the outnumbered and poorly-equipped local police:

The European Union, which largely created the problem in the first place by refusing to secure Europe’s borders for years, has also announced a last-minute “10-point plan stop the migrant boast from North African country of Tunisia from reaching Lampedusa,” The Euronews TV channel reported Monday.

Under the plan, Brussels vowed to relocate these migrants to other European member states and cut a new migration deal with the Muslim-majority Tunisia, which has become a bridged-head for migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa heading to Europe, an EU statement says.

Germany’s state-owned DW TV reported the frantic measures being taken by the EU and Italy:

Meloni, of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, stressed that the “challenge of the massive flow of immigrants” must be addressed at a pan-European level. “If somebody here in Europe were to think that this crisis that we are tackling and facing could just be solved within Italian borders, then it would be a very big and huge mistake,” she said at a press conference at Lampedusa airport, after her visit to the center.

Over the past few days, Italian authorities, including the mayor of Lampedusa, have voiced concerns that the country has been left to deal with the crisis on its own. During her visit, the European Commission president announced a 10-point action plan for Lampedusa. “Migration is a European challenge and will receive a European solution,” von der Leyen said.

As part of the plan, the European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA) and the European Border and Coast Guard (Frontex) will be deployed to Italy to manage new arrivals. European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas would also be sent to some of the migrants’ countries of origin to negotiate ways of managing migration and returns.

The EU has already signed a deal with Tunisia in July to help put an end to migration from North Africa. The European Commission has not yet paid out the €100 million ($106.6 million) included in the deal and EU officials have told journalists that “it is a work in progress.” On Saturday, Tunisian police at the port of Sfax, one of the main points of departure, arrested hundreds of migrants and began cracking down on people smugglers.

Germany, Austria gear up a new migrant wave

After initially refusing to relocate migrants arriving in Lampedusa, Germany’s socialist-led government agreed to take them. The “government will again voluntarily accept migrant from Italy,” the newspaper Die Welt reported Monday. “In light of mass-arrival [of migrant] in the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, federal government will resume the intake of migrants from Italy, the daily added.

Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) opposition party accused Berlin of deliberately destroying the country through mass-migration. “While #Lampedusa one speaks of #Invasion of young African men, [Germany’s coalition government] can’t move fast enough to bring them to Germany. This policy — without any logic — only serves to destroy our country,” the party said on its official Twitter/X account.

Fearing a migrant influx similar to the one in 2015, Germany’s southern neighbor Austria tightened its borders with Italy — angering Brussels and left-wing media.

“In what can be viewed as a fresh blow to the EU’s visa-free Schengen zone, Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer has announced plans to begin restricting free travel into the country from Italy,” the Belgian news website Euractiv reported Monday. “Austria already carries out border checks on its border with Slovenia. The practice, which has been in place since 2015, has drawn the ire of Brussels, but it looks set to be extended.”

Those Chinese in Italy were imported to work in the leather industry and were primarily from Wuhan. It is suspected that they brought the Wuhan virus to Europe.

Why would Italy have allowed 10,000 migrants to go to an island of 6,000? Where were they supposed to stay? I don’t imagine the island had thousands of vacant homes.

I mean really, you think the government probably doesn’t care for the islanders too much

Dropping off migrants in Lampedusa is merely a convenience for the smugglers. If you look at a map, the island is roughly half-way between Libya and the Italian peninsula. Lampedusa is Italian territory. It is far easier for the smugglers to simply dump their cargo on the island than it is to transport them to say, Pazzallo. The smugglers know that the Italian government will take them the rest of the way.

The proper solution is not to merely deport the illegal invaders, although that is the first step. The proper solution requires the North African governments (Morrocco, Libya, Tunisia, etc) to become highly motivated in preventing human smugglers from originating from their ports.

The Italian Navy, with the support of the EUNAVFOR, should invade North African harbors, take their boats, and scuttle them in the mouths of their harbors, until those harbors become unnavigable.

At that time, the North African governments will become highly motivated to interdict the human smugglers originating from their ports, and the problem of illegal immigration over the Mediterranean will be solved.

      Many upticks.

The first thing they should do is leave them on Lampedusa. Pay off the locals and move them off the island. If migrants want to go to Lampedusa, there they will go and have the opportunity to take care of themselves there, but no boats from there to Sicily or the Italian mainland, or Austria, Germany or anywhere else. You wanted Lampedusa, and there you will stay.

If they had the will to do that, the flood might actually stop.

Upticks for the proper use of power by a state.

It didn’t “allow” them. They showed up. They didn’t ask Italy for permission. The island is right near Tunisia so they just come.

The Italians are trying to keep white supremacists out, those being the Africans.

It makes little sense for Americans to act outraged over this since we have the same thing going on. In fifteen years there will be no American culture. Between the blacks and the Hispanics bringing in their cultures and ways, We will lose all of our culture because someone always finds something racist or too religious. What sickens me the most is that the South and Central American invaders always wave their country of origin’s flag every holiday they have from home. Why didn’t they just stay there?

Why didn’t they just stay there?
Because their streets aren’t paved with gold.

The motivation to illegally immigrate from one place to another is exceedingly simple and does not require a doctorate in Sociology to understand.

In the absence of any penalties, people do this because it is better at their destination than it is at their origin.

      JohnSmith100 in reply to not_a_lawyer. | September 20, 2023 at 8:28 am

True, so we must make it worse for them than what they had at their point of origin.

Or, conceivably, give them good reason to think they can make their origin better.
But that would require telling them a few things like their culture sucks and they’ll have to change it. And our “leaders” find themselves religiously captured by a religion that denies that.

“After initially refusing to relocate migrants arriving in Lampedusa, Germany’s socialist-led government agreed to take them. These are NOT migrants from Italy – that is fully legal as EU citizens. These are migrants from AFRICA. Words matter.

And as someone who lived in Africa for 11 years and worked in several post-conflict countries, I will say that I’ve seen that walk (seen in the embedded video) many times. It is the walk of dominance and arrogance from the young men carrying their machetes and AK-47s. The young men who lay about and won’t work, impregnate every woman (and girl) they can, but let the women do all the work. Worthless men.

Send them back!

Stopping the boats is a very far cry from deporting the illegal aliens back to where they came from.

Nothing in the above indicates any plan to actually deport anyone.

Want to actually stop the boats from coming? Simple: Immediately deport everyone that comes. Word will quickly spread that there’s no point going, since you’ll get sent back right away, and voila: no more boats.

If you do not see their warships heading out to sea, you know nothing will be done
