Bill Maher to MSNBC’s Ari Melber: ‘Try to Understand Why’ So Many Support Trump

“Just crack a window a little bit, and you maybe understand why people would — you have to try to understand why half the country is looking to Donald Trump as some sort of savior.”

Comedian Bill Maher is once again the voice of reason.

I don’t agree with everything he said during his time on MSNBC’s The Beat With Ari Melber, but the left is coming close to making the same mistake as they did in 2016:

The liberal comedian was a guest on MSNBC’s “The Beat With Ari Melber,” Wednesday, when Melber commented on the differences in reactions between Trump’s base and “normal, reality-adjusted” persons to the Georgia election interference hearings against Donald Trump.

Maher pushed back against Melber’s dig at the former president’s supporters. “I got to stop you and say, I don’t think this helps, the media world that we live in, where we sit here and everybody else is just a deplorable who’s – reality challenged,” he responded.

The liberal host defended himself, saying he didn’t call anyone “deplorable,” but argued there was a difference between those “against sedition” and those who weren’t.

Man, Hillary Clinton will never live down that “deplorable” line, is she?

But Maher reminded Melber that, once again, the left has never taken the time to understand why Trump still has so many supporters:

“They see him as the one thing that is standing between them and something even crazier. And there is a lot of crazy on the left,” he retorted.

Maher implored MSNBC viewers to “try to understand” why half the country still supports the former president.

“I think it would be helpful if the people who watch this would see that. Just crack a window a little bit, and you maybe understand why people would — you have to try to understand why half the country is looking to Donald Trump as some sort of savior. Yes, it’s not what we think, but, you know, people are not self-deporting in this country. Half the country isn’t going away. Even if the Democrat wins the next time, they’ll still be here, and they’ll still have these views. And some of them are not crazy,” he argued.

Bill is trying to get a lefty Dem to “understand”. Not something the lefty dares to do as he will be driven out as a member in good standing with The Party.

Yep. To seek understanding of another’s position, which isn’t necessarily agreement, or of views different than our own requires us to step out of the constrains of our own belief systems. That’s anathema to leftists. The modern left in many ways is reminiscent of old school Puritanism regarding exposure to heterodox ideas. Some held that books (knowledge) were dangerous and that if an idea wasn’t reflected in the Bible it was counter to the word of God and if it was in the Bible then it was redundant and therefore unnecessary. The modern left is very similar in this respect.

I agree with you but also think that the leftists aren’t the only ones with overzealous ideological devotion. We have our own problems with that and some of them are represented right here in the LI comment sections.

        Look in the mirror.

Exactly. Just look at the overzealous ideological devotion of the Trump supporters on this blog. They are unable to look outside their bubble.

Some cannot help themselves and must go out of their way to seek animosity. Talk about overzealous.

          JohnSmith100 in reply to JR. | September 7, 2023 at 8:55 pm

Lookat the DeSantis crowd, overzealous and a bit deranged.

That’s just . . . to use your own word, deranged. “The DeSantis crowd” supports DeSantis in the primary and will vote for whomever wins the GOP nomination, including Trump.

What I am struggling to understand is why you Only Trumpers are so venomous toward “the DeSantis crowd.” Your guy is winning, hands down, the nomination at this point. Why the nastiness from you people? Seems . . . off. I mean if I knew my guy was sailing toward the nomination by double digits, I wouldn’t be kicking the double digit loser while he’s down, nor would I be bashing his (very few, according to polls) supporters. If I were you Only Trumpers, I’d be trying to shore up support for the clear front runner, not working over time to make him seem completely hideous and the hands down wrong choice.

But you guys . . . you’re winning, and can’t take “yes” for an answer. Why is that? Why are you so scared? It’s truly puzzling to me. I mean Trump is winning the GOP nomination by double digits at this point, but you can’t ride that wave, you have to drag him down with your vitriol and crazy. It’s bizarre to me, unfathomable.

90% of your posts are about Trump, JR. You post about Trump in articles that have nothing to do with him. Maybe sit this one out, slick.

Some of the “DeSantis crowd” may well sit it out. Presumptuous for anyone to speak for all of them.

This thread was about Maher, but somehow it became about “supporters.” How did that happen?

healthguyfsu in reply to JR. | September 7, 2023 at 9:58 pm

          @Fuzzy

You ask too many questions that require self-reflection and a healthy outlook on America and all of its citizenry. Your response, should one choose to engage, will likely be a pile of names and gibberish a la Trump coupled with some “woe is me” victimhood.

          JohnSmith100 in reply to JR. | September 7, 2023 at 11:47 pm

Fuzzy, your and others reaction to my tossing the overzealous claims back into your court demonstrates my point. Be glad that Florida will benefit from from what DeSantis can do for the state.

“What I am struggling to understand is why you Only Trumpers are so venomous toward “the DeSantis crowd.””

They are venomous because without Trump there would likely BE NO DeSantis crowd.

And far too many of that crowd seem to want nothing more than to distance DeSantis from Trump and attach him to the McConnellites

          They see it as betrayal.

Yes indeed, pot calling kettle black…

        Yes indeed

The Only Trumpers are the equal and opposite of the Never Trumpers. Neither group can think rationally. The Never Trumpers view Trump as the devil. The Only Trumpers view Trump as a god. Equal and opposite. (As I’ve commented before: Trump is even in the polls with the worst president the US has ever seen. That’s right: Trump is even. With Biden. Yet so many on this page keep shouting “Trump.” Do they want to lose? Will they enjoy their victim-hood? the cries that the elections were fixed?)

Azathoth in reply to Stuytown. | September 8, 2023 at 12:32 pm

          There are no ‘onlytrumpers’.

This was pointed out in a podcast last night.

People, supporters, boo Trump at his own rallies when they don’t like what he’s saying. Many don’t like Trump at all –but they like what he did, and what he seems to have planned.

There is a bit of a cult of personality, but it is not at all Trump’s base. It’s a small faction IN the base.

          There are nevertrumpers though.

People, ostensibly on the right, whose distaste for Trump has rendered them quasi-leftist in nature.

Have you read the comments section at NR lately? It could be Slate.

I would go further and say that the Left considers many as no different than Salem witches.

fscarn in reply to Whitewall. | September 7, 2023 at 4:21 pm

The left’s members are the products of leftist thinking, amply supplied and reinforced by the NYT, WP, PBS, CNN, and more. All of these sources portray those of us who wish for constitutional, limited government as little clones, loons, “conspiracy nuts,” wearing tin hats, crying, “The sky is falling.” They mockingly ask, – “Has the Republic fallen?” as proof that our claims are just hot air. But the truth is, the Republic has fallen. When we have a fedgov which properly should be 5-10% of its present size, we have a failed Republic,

They think those sources accurately describe us.

It’s all of a piece to belittle us, that we’re just Bible-thumping, gun-toting, snake-handling nuts. To be dismissed as mere nothings, or as Hillary called us, a basket of deplorables. What was it that their Obama said [2008], “And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. That’s a pretty broad list of things to explain with job loss.”

Well, it turns out that there substantial reasons for those job losses, and those reasons have some of us quite unsettled. The list of what the left/Democrats is doing deliberately to this country is too long.

Whitewall in reply to fscarn. | September 7, 2023 at 5:14 pm

On the challenge of speaking out, W F Buckley once said, “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.” It happens over and over again.

henrybowman in reply to fscarn. | September 8, 2023 at 2:07 pm

OMG, I just realized that I have literally become a snake-handling nut.

Since moving to Arizona, we collect an average of a dozen rattlers in our freezer annually, and occasionally “handle” a well-chilled specimen to provide avoidance training for puppies.

Pardon me while I retire to adjust my self-image… again.

Democrats are not the only people who need to listen to Bill Maher sdome people who think we are “listless vessels” should listen too.

    CommoChief in reply to thad_the_man. | September 7, 2023 at 8:26 pm

No one with an open mind is a ‘listless vessel’ that is for sure, though it may very well apply to those who are narrow minded or closed minded.

They’ve never understood that Trump is not a cause, he’s an effect. And the anger that propelled his campaigns didn’t appear overnight. It’s been building for a long time. But you can’t tell that to a “journalist” who finds any place outside New York City to be terra incognita.

I’m reminded of the Upton Sinclair quote:
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his [MSNBC] salary depends on his not understanding it.”

I wish no luck to Bill Maher. He still thinks J6 was an insurrection and TDS defines anything he has to say about Trump. On top of that, he himself doesn’t understand why Trump has die hard support from half the country.

    JohnSmith100 in reply to technerd. | September 7, 2023 at 9:12 pm

Maybe he is on the path to understanding, it always takes time and many small steps consider the order of things.

      henrybowman in reply to JohnSmith100. | September 8, 2023 at 2:12 pm

Bill has such a committed liberal brand identity that if he does ever realize the enormity of what the rest of us clearly see, he may be subject to the sort of psychic breakdown that the narrator of “Zen And The Art if Motorcycle Maintenance” experienced.

This is only part of the interview. He also said that what Biden has done with bribery and influence selling is corrupt and stinks but that what Trump did while POTUS was much worse. As usual, they never tell us what are the terrible things that Trump did. Maher is a lot like RFK jr in that he says a few things that sound reasonable but under the lid, he is a true blue liberal swine.

I’m glad Maher admits that “some of us” are not crazy.
It’s damn white of him.

Maher really does not have a clue if he cannot understand that Trump is the one representing liberal values.

Bill Mahr has half his brain in Hollywood bubble, a quarter of his brain in reality and another quarter of his brain up his ass.

While with Joe Rogan, Mahr accused Trump of “all his crimes” – meaning, “crimes” PRIOR to the present fascist persecutions by the deep state.

Rogan did not ask “what crimes” and Mahr did not elaborate. Few people with a quarter of their brain are worth anything, let alone Mahr. who is trying to play both sides of the fence.

    $%@#$ him.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | September 7, 2023 at 9:51 pm

he liberal host defended himself, saying he didn’t call anyone “deplorable,” but argued there was a difference between those “against sedition” and those who weren’t.

It really takes some chutzpah for leftists to try and pretend that they like America. Almost the entire leftist program is built upon the foundation of their absolute and complete hate of America. They hate everything about America, not least of all Americans and any Americanism. Leftists are about nothing but destroying this nation and have been for some time – though kicked into hyperdrive ever since the ineligible Indonesian retard slimed into office.

The only insurrection attempts that have taken place in America were the insane – totally insane – riots and looting and arson of 2020 where the leftists tried to literally burn the nation down. They went so far as to actually try to take AMerican territory (which democrat officials actually tried to cede to them) to establish some new, retarded leftist hellhole. They attacked every symbol of AMerica they could find and made clear that all they cared about was that this nation should die. And now, these same treasonous imbeciles try and act as if they are “defending America”. It’s almost comical … except for the fact that most of these people deserve to stand trial for their treason (and worse!).

Suburban Farm Guy | September 7, 2023 at 11:34 pm

Liberals act like they’re saving democracy while they frantically pull out all the stops to keep people from voting for who they want to vote for.

Hmmmm.

Then they celebrate rigged elections and show trials, proving that Joe Stalin is their big hero and that they don’t belong in America. Yay democracy!

Another day that ends with ‘y.’

Given the poll numbers and how they react when Trump gets indicted it appears that the left understands perfectly.
