Cal State Long Beach Drops ’49er’ Name From Campus Bookstore and Restaurant

Cal State Long Beach Drops ’49er’ Name From Campus Bookstore and Restaurant

“encapsulates a bigger change in the community and student representation.”

The apparent objection here is that the Gold Rush somehow represents genocide.

The College Fix reports:

Cal State Long Beach ditches ’49er’ name from campus bookstore, restaurants, shops

The campus bookstore, assorted restaurants and other shops at Cal State Long Beach no longer will be called “49er Shops” due to the name’s “controversial history regarding the gold rush and genocide.”

According to, ironically, the Daily Forty-Niner, the school’s Associated Students Inc. and 49er Shops, which merged into the Shared Services Initiative last year, now will be known as “Beach Shops.”

Student Auxiliary Enterprises Executive Director Miles Nevin said the name change “encapsulates a bigger change in the community and student representation.”

“It’s just about reflecting on the name (the 49ers) and how it resonates with the population we serve ensuring that it is relevant to them, primarily our students,” he said.

American Indian Studies Program Director Craig Stone said his department “strongly supports and appreciates the name change […] as it supports the goal of distancing Cal State Long Beach from the genocide of California Indians associated with the California Gold Rush that began in 1849.”

In 2018, CSULB ditched its mascot “Prospector Pete” (pictured) due to connections to “racism” and Native American genocide. Stone had said mascots like “Pete” can be alienating and invoke “historical trauma.”

Obviously this is stupid on many levels. The ’49 gold rush is a major part of California’s history and growth. There was no mass genocide. But the funniest part is these morons ignore the fact that the school was founded in 1949.

I’m a proud graduate of LBSU, Long Beach State University. I’m the opposite of proud of the morons who thought CSULB would be a better name.

It’s as if these administrators have run out of ideas how to make their schools more effective

And so they come up with this kind of drivel

Does any paying customer benefit? No.

I do not understand for the life of me why any American family in 2023 would have anything to do with CSU

Because “Beach” is way less racist than “49er.”

Nothing about Spanish imperialism in California before American sovereignty was established. The world in California did not begin in 1849.

The Spanish missionaries who established the chain of missions from San Diego to San Fran engaged in a harsh program to convert the local “Indians” they encountered as they moved north. The 49ers were drawn by the discovery of gold much farther north, from LB, That was in 1849, many years after the missions were established….

    Maybe they need tougher students.

Could the Chargers have made a complaint: it offends them to have a team with that name so close…. 🙂
