NYC To Pay Minority Teachers Who Failed Teaching Exam Up To $2M. Each.

“Roughly 5,200 black and Hispanic ex-Big Apple teachers and once-aspiring educators are expected to collect more than $1.8 billion in judgments”

This is what “equity” looks like: people cannot pass a teaching exam on merit, so they are handed one or two million in taxpayer-funded ‘compensation.’ The people footing the bill, of course, are expected to love this idea. It’s New York City, so maybe they do.

The New York Post reports:

Failing the New York State teachers’ exam really paid off — especially for a Queens man who learned this month he’s getting a $2 million windfall over it.

Roughly 5,200 black and Hispanic ex-Big Apple teachers and once-aspiring educators are expected to collect more than $1.8 billion in judgments after the city stopped fighting a nearly three-decade federal discrimination lawsuit that found a certification exam was biased.

It’s the largest legal payout in city history.

As of Friday, 225 people who failed the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test used for teacher licensing from 1994 to 2014 had already been notified they’re getting settlements of at least $1 million, according to an analysis of Manhattan federal court records.

Court rulings found the exam violated civil-rights laws, allowing far more white candidates to pass.

. . . . Herman Grim, 64, of Queens, on July 5 was awarded the biggest judgment to date — a jaw-dropping $2,055,383.

. . . . Grim said he’s in disbelief but the money can’t come fast enough because he’s racked up serious debt on his Queens home and credit cards.

He couldn’t recite examples of why the test was biased.

But Grim recalled hiring private tutors and studying for it during the early 1990s, before failing many times.

“I can’t tell you how many times I took them. A lot! A lot!” he said.

Fox News has more:

The lawsuit, originally filed by four teachers in 1996, claimed that the exam was “culturally biased” in favor of White applicants. According to the plaintiffs, more than 90% of White applicants passed the multiple-choice and essay test while Black applicants only passed 53% of the time. Hispanic applicants only received passing scores 50% of the time.

A trial in 2003 originally ruled in favor of the city, but in 2012, a Manhattan federal judge found that the licensing exam violated the applicants’ civil rights because it did not assess “general knowledge, teaching skills, or competency in content areas” nor did it predict “competent job performance.”

A federally appointed special master was later appointed following the ruling while the city continued to appeal the decision. However, by 2018, former Mayor Bill de Blasio began starting the settlement process by setting aside the $1.8 billion for payouts.

Lead lawyer Joshua Sohn blasted the city as it continued, “to use the test to deny a generation of Black and Latino teachers a fair opportunity to be considered for teaching positions and deprived a generation of students of receiving the benefit of having a more diverse teacher population.”

. . . . More than $750 million in judgments have already been doled out to 2,959 of the 5,200 plaintiffs with some individual settlements as low as several hundred dollars. Some payments also accounted for other compensations including back pay.

“Back pay”? For what? Jobs they were not qualified for and never held? I have no words.

My most recent employment was a joke. One of my fellow automation techs was a single black mother and the gushing over her “Equity” was a bit too much seeing how unskilled she was.
That is what you want? Poor job performance overlooked because of the color of skin?
That is unsustainable. Time for a national divorce.

Anything that resembles an IQ test gets the same results that IQ tests do.

If you are a taxpayer in NYC, you should have figured out by now that you should get out. Because this is going to be a recurrent type award. Of course if you are still in NYC, you obviously have not.

You be surprised how many people fail to connect how they vote with the outcomes that occur. I guess when taxes get too onerous and crime gets too much, people who are able to then leave. Of course because of the failure to connect voting with outcomes, they just continue to vote the same way.

Or you’re there because you’re angling for your own payout.

Teaching tests are absurdly easy. Ridiculously so. Still, I know a fair few teachers who don’t/can’t pass them.

If you can’t pass the education tests after studying the relevant material, then you’ve no business trying to teach.

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to Dathurtz. | July 17, 2023 at 7:16 am

Illiterate teachers, teaching the illiterate offspring of equally illiterate parents.

Please, for the sake of humanity, do not let these people move out of New York to places like North Carolina and Florida. They will bring their stupidity with them, and dumb down the rest of the nation.

Need proof? I present Pennsylvania as an example. The same for Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and soon to be Montana and Texas.

The movie Idiocracy was never meant to be a prediction of things to come.

The only saving grace is that these morons never became teachers. It is amazing that they even got through a college that purports to teach teachers!

WTF! My wife is a retired, career NY City high school teacher, with career earnings perhaps a little over $1M. By the way, the licensing exam she took was very hard for anyone to pass and included tough in-person questioning.

Clearly it was racist AF. Equitable passage rates are in the Constitution, amirite?

Thisnis slave reparations clear and simple

They are going to steal all our money one way or another

This is beyond insane

Now the avalanche begins

Get your kids out of public schools, get out of blue states

If there are no kids to teach cause parents are tired of paying for Imbeciles not doing their jobs and collecting MILLIONS

There are no words

Still and again and again: We don’t have a race problem in the USA. We have a problem race.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | July 16, 2023 at 11:24 pm

JFK Jr. could have sued New York for their unfair bar exam (as he failed it twice and only finally passed because they felt bad for him) and gotten a few million for being a moron.

It’s hard to express how insane this is. Everyone involved in this case who caused this unbelievable outcome need to be dumped into Brazen Bulls for longs rides into the afterlife. This is as nuts as it gets. No society that allows stuff like this to happen is a serious society or is long for this world. This is the sort of thing you see right before everything disintegrates.

Wow.

It’s interesting how test results must always be the fault of the test, not the students, when those students are not white. Now matter how much or how often non-whites (especially blacks) fail at something it is never their fault and always somebody else’s responsibility to pay for.

This is completely insane. We’re paying people for being stupid.

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to geronl. | July 17, 2023 at 7:19 am

So, ummmm, who are the real stupid people in this scenario?

The grifters who get millions of $$$$$$, or the people who pay the grifters?

Ravelli: Now, for rehearsing we make special rate. Thatsa fifteen dollars an hour.

Spaulding: That’s for rehearsing?

Ravelli: Thatsa for rehearsing.

Spaulding: And what do you get for not rehearsing?

Ravelli: You couldn’t afford it…Heh…you see, if we don’t rehearse, we don’t play…And, if we don’t play…That runs into money

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | July 17, 2023 at 12:38 am

I guess failing a test that any idiot could have passed is a better way to a million dollars than having to spill hot coffee all over yourself because you are too stupid to have figured out by age 85 not to open a full coffee cup in a car.

Either way, it certainly pays to be a retard in this society. And the more annoying a retard the more it pays. The fall of Rome has nothing on this pathetic, imbecilic shitshow.

I see you don’t even know anything about the case you’re referencing.

McDonalds knew of past incidents, yet intentionally decided to keep the coffee boiling hot.

      They got off cheap!

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to Just Al. | July 17, 2023 at 12:55 pm

I know all about the McDonald’s case. It was a joke. The old, old lady put a take-out cup of coffee between her legs and opened it while her idiot son was driving in the lot and it spilled on her. You’d have to be a real moron to do that, which is exactly what she was. The coffee was something like 160 degrees, which is hot but that is what people who drink coffee want, since coffee cools, it doesn’t heat. People who drink coffee know that it is served HOT. You DO NOT put a paper cup of coffee between your legs in a car a take the top off.

On top of all that idiocy the award was insane. The original jury award was retarded and even the adjusted award on appeal was sheer lunacy. McDonald’s didn’t do anything wrong but thanks to this bitty and some idiot lawyers the rest of us have to be satisfied with lukewarm coffee. Thanks a lot …

There’s an easy, progressive solution that ensures “equity.” Just stop giving the exams. That’s what the Oregon governor did when too many minorities were failing the high-school exams. That’s what colleges are doing to make it impossible to prove they are discriminating.

But I have no sympathy for the NYC taxpayers who will be stuck with the bill. If you haven’t left NYC (or San Francisco or Seattle or Portland or Minneapolis) by now, you deserve what you get.

Reparations by another name

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to Skip. | July 17, 2023 at 7:25 am

    Imagine.

The current regime just opened the door to 5 to 7 million new illiterate voters crossing the southern border.

Many of them will be represented by attorneys hell bent on suing whomever they can to empty the American taxpayer’s pockets.

SeymourButz | July 17, 2023 at 6:51 am

I believe the party line was to pay teachers more.

Instead, they’re paying people who weren’t qualified to be teachers more than teachers will make in a decade.

We can’t live like this.

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to SeymourButz. | July 17, 2023 at 7:29 am

    Correct.

Herman “Grim recalled hiring private tutors and studying for it during the early 1990s, before failing many times.”

Even with help, this moron couldn’t pass the exam. Yet, the windfall is more than he would have made if he had passed the exam.

Now just consider:
You’re going in for opeen-heart surgery and your surgeon is going to be …

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to paracelsus. | July 17, 2023 at 12:19 pm

    Easy fix.

    1. Make sure your cardio thoracic surgeon graduates from an accredited medical school (MD or DO)
    2. Make sure your surgeon attended an ACGME accredited residency
    3. Make sure your CTS is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the Osteopathic equivalent
    4. Check your state Medical Board website to ensure your physician does not have documented sanctions, and has an unrestricted license

The above makes sure that portly trained doctors aren’t touching you.

The lefty policies generating failure after failure and racking up both direct and indirect costs are working to bankrupt the blue metropolitan areas.

Someday soon the folks in these places are gonna come to DC and demand a bailout from the taxpayers who live in jurisdictions with fiscally prudent policies and haven’t voted for cray cray socially destructive policies that kick start a downward spiral.

Dathurtz in reply to CommoChief. | July 17, 2023 at 8:56 am

    They’re gonna get it, too.

CommoChief in reply to Dathurtz. | July 17, 2023 at 12:46 pm

Maybe not. The State govt may be willing to bail out bankrupt Cities but given the political polarization that exists, especially the tension between Cities (overwhelmingly blue) and suburbs/exurbs and rural areas (overwhelmingly red) See WI AB245 aka ‘Milwaukee Bailout Bill’. Lots of elbows thrown even at State level.

I wouldn’t be confident that a Federal bailout will be approved. Not without fairly draconian revisions to their public employee union contracts/benefit cuts and an oversight board running the show to implement the policy changes in return for approval. The underfunded pensions gonna get a haircut or any fix is a temp band aid and services likely to decline, local regulation/barriers for business formation and for building housing will also need to be made.

That the blue Cities and enclaves will demand a bailout is uncontested whether they get it and whether they are willing to endure the pain of the conditions imposed are two different things.

They already get that bailout via federal education funds. Eliminate that funding source and they wouldn’t pull this carp.

I certainly hope that federal, state, and city income taxes will be withheld from their paychecks.

They might get to keep 50% of “their own money.”

Suburban Farm Guy | July 17, 2023 at 10:14 am

What kind of test has questions that only white people can answer? I want to see this before I believe it. Not happening.

Critically, it WAS NOT ‘only’ white people.

The ONLY people that struggled with the test were black and Hispanic – and Hispanics provably failed the test because they didn’t speak ****ing English well enough to take the test. If they don’t speak English, they can’t teach children that speak English, and it’s utterly insane to call that ‘racist’.

Asians, Indians, Middle Eastern Muslims, and a whole host of other ethnicities and cultures had no problems passing the test as long as they spoke English.

Funny how the only ‘race’ that had actual problems with the test has a racial culture built around openly attacking education.

The left has simply gone insane with their racism.

The people footing the bill, of course, are expected to love this idea.
Expecting only the people of NY to pay for it is naive, at best. Only if you cut off all federal education funding to NY would that be true.

E Howard Hunt | July 17, 2023 at 11:52 am

I’m going to start a minority cram course for these exams. Strategies will include shooting up and partying all week just before the test date. One can never be too underprepared.

Liberal Playbook: Do anything you can to buy votes but always use someone else money.

I would like to see the NBA follow New York’s example and pay me $2 million for not being good enough to make any of their teams.

Jhnmilller84 | July 17, 2023 at 10:50 pm

“Culturally biased” towards which culture? American? I would think? If we’re going to have a separate culture for each shade of American, we might just as well have reservations for each shade of American.

This will be deducted out of the National Reparations Checks that Biden will pay out before the 2024 Elections, right?
