40 Percent of Brown University Students Claim to be LGBT
“The idea of LGBT identification as a social contagion is one that continues to draw criticism among academics.”
This figure seems absurdly high. The Washington Examiner suggests that social contagion is at play here:
Forty percent of Brown University students say they are LGBT, suggesting social contagion
New survey data from Brown University’s student newspaper provides further evidence that the increase in LGBT identification is driven by social pressures.
The latest data show that between 2010 and 2023, identification as LGBTQ+ has almost tripled among the student body at Brown (from 14% in 2010 saying they were not heterosexual to 38% now). “The Herald’s Spring 2023 poll found that 38% of students do not identify as straight — over five times the national rate ,” The Brown Daily Herald reported . “Over the past decade, LGBTQ+ identification has increased across the nation, with especially sharp growth at Brown.”
Other sexual orientations have seen massive increases. “Since Fall 2010, Brown’s LGBTQ+ population has expanded considerably. The gay or lesbian population has increased by 26% and the percentage of students identifying as bisexual has increased by 232%,” the student newspaper reported. “Students identifying as other sexual orientations within the LGBTQ+ community have increased by 793%.”
The idea of LGBT identification as a social contagion is one that continues to draw criticism among academics. For example, the head of an academic journal that published a paper that supported the theory of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria faced a cancellation attempt, along with the Northwestern University professor who wrote the paper.
Coincidentally, Dr. Lisa Littman, who popularized the idea of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria, once taught at Brown University before being forced out over the controversy.
Dr. Littman argued that some girls who identified as transgender were doing so due to peer pressure from within their social circles. The 38% identification tracks with research from the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, which found similar levels among elite colleges. The researcher on that project, Eric Kaufmann, noted in comments to the College Fix that his research has found sexual behavior has not kept pace with the identification.
In other words, bisexual identification outstrips bisexual sexual activity.

We have decades of stats consistently showing percentage of non heterosexual individuals being 2-4 percent of population worldwide…so apparently at Brown 36-38% of the student population is desperate to stand out…please please pay attention to me!!..and be part of a group, ANY group and live as a trend chaser at any cost..,Pathetic doesn’t even begin to cover such losers

Some trade schools do that.
So —— if the student does badly after graduation, then so does the teacher(s) who had done the teaching!!

I just had a discussion two days ago with a school principal about a CDC study that showed 26% of high school kids identifying as LGBTQ. We’re both gay, which I don’t flaunt around here unless it’s relevant, which I think this time it is. Anyone who reads this whole comment (God help you) will see that I’m objective, rigorous, and non-promotional.
It was published in 2022 based on data gathered in 2021, and the statistics tables were published this year. He didn’t believe the numbers, nor did I. He thought the correct number of gays is 10%, and I said 3%-4% because that’s what Kinsey said in 1948 and I don’t think anything’s different now,
He’s liberal, and thought the 25% number was fake wingnut news intended to get conservatives all riled up. I said, no, I remember when that number came out and it wasn’t what you think. So the first thing I did was go back and find the original stories. My first text to him was of stories from 13 months ago in the NY Times and other “mainstream” sources. There were others too, none from the wingnuts.
Then I read the stories and something jumped out at me: 12% of the high school kids said they were bisexual. Before I went to the stats tables, I speculated that it would be very much skewed to high school girls, because women in general put more a higher emotional component into sex — I think it’s genetics, but kill me now.
I further speculated that young girls who think they’re bisexual aren’t actually DOING it — as opposed to men, who are far more likely to think quite specifically about what they’re sticking where. If a young man says he’s bisexual, I think he’s been doing it rather than just thinking about it. Oh, and let’s say something about bisexuals. No one cares about the opposite-sex component. Bisexuality is really about the part-time homosexual component — no matter who you are, and what you think.
Lo and behold, 20% of HS girls “identified” as bisexual, while 4% of HS boys did in the CDC survey. Similarly, the “other/questioning” category was 9% total, but the skew was 14% girls, 4% boys. It’s not exactly new that girls tend to be more “plastic” in regard to sex, and (as I just mentioned) put more emotion into the whole thing. Not only that, but there’s much more pressure on girls to conform to expectations, and I speculate that this accounts for the higher “other/questioning” number.
Now, for the real kicker: The survey said that 3.7% of high school girls “identify” as lesbians, and 2.4% of high school boys “identify” as gay. Blended total: 3.2%. Guess what? Those are the same overall numbers reported by Kinsey’s 1948 study, “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.” Yet the media presented the CDC study (whose methodology was questionable) as evidence of a big increase, especially in “trans.”
A word about Kinsey’s study. I first ran across it in a college class in the 1970s. Only recently did I order a copy from Amazon. I am familiar with the criticisms, but I think it really is a landmark, and about as accurate as it could possibly be given the sensitivity of the subject. What’s amazing to me is how accuate it was in spite of not being scientific enough in terms of survey research methodology.
Also, the actual book is far, far more detailed, numbers-wise, than I expected it to be. It runs 765 pages exclusive of bibliography and index, and slices and dices very finely. I am God’s own numbers nerd, but I defy anyone other than a research specialist to get through it all. So I skipped around, and came away with more respect than I expected to have; before doing that, I’d thought there was more conjecture than there was.
Anyway, here’s a link to the CDC stats. Nope, 25% of the high school kids aren’t LGBT whatever. As for 40% at Brown? I don’t believe it for a microsecond. Kinsey found that college-educated men were LESS likely to be homosexual than the average, and I have no reason to think that this has changed. I think not about what they’re saying, but — like Kinsey — what they are doing.

Kinsey’s numbers were almost certainly lies, as he had an agenda to push.
I doubt that you’ve ever looked into Kinsey’s work on your own.
I’m not entirely convinced girls actually are more sexually plastic, as opposed to being more susceptible to social pressure to conform to progressive politics, especially lesbian politics. It wouldn’t surprise me the research to prove it was tainted by agenda, as so much sexual research is/was, including Kinsey’s.
I didn’t see much grooming by gay men in administrative or teaching positions in college (1980s), at least not publicly, but the lesbians were rather less circumspect about it, I think in part because such activity isn’t seen as functionally or actually criminal the way it is when men do it.
As my followup comment points out, I almost immediately reconsidered my choice of words. I think women tend to be much more susceptible to conflate the emotional and physical elements of sex when it comes to self-“identification” (I don’t like the “identify” word either, but here we are) on orientations.
I think men are a whole lot more likely to first look at what they do or want to do, and much less how they feel. This is hard to articulate without a) lapsing into stereotypes, and b) being confronted with exceptions in the real world.
In any case, in the CDC study, 20% of high school girls called themselves bisexual while only 4% of high school boys did. I might struggle with exactly how to analyze that in words here, but it’s a MAJOR gap and one that I accurately hypothesized before ever looking into the numbers.
p.s.: With regard to my comment about women and girls putting more emotion into sex, I didn’t phrase that quite accurately. I think females are more likely than male to conflate emotional attraction with physical sex, the result being that women and especially teenage girls will be more inclined to “identify” as bisexual even though nothing physical is happening.
Now, no one will ever be able to really nail it, pardon the pun. But my belief, based on lifetime experience and observation, is that you can take that 2.4% of high school boys being gay and add most if not all of the 4% being bisexual and figure that the real number is 6%. That will decline somewhat over time.
The numbers for the girls are, in my opinion, far too high because the majority of the responses don’t reflect any physical reality. In later research, Kinsey found that women are less likely to be lesbians than men are to be gay. Bottom line: I don’t think the true percentage of full-time homosexuals is much different than it ever was, maybe 3%.
Part-timers is the big unknown, but my gut feel is it’s not all that many, especially as people get older.
Tuition well spent. Those are college loans well worth repaying.
Sending your kid to an American college today is like sending your kid to the bar in the original STARWARS movie.
What percentage are transgender? How do you define transgender? One crossdresser I know of defines it as a man wearing anything normally worn by a woman, including earrings, lipstick, eyeliner, or nail polish.
That definition would add every guy who has an earring or an ear plug and any guy into goth or rock who wears dark nail polish.
Supposedly 1.4% in the survey, but I couldn’t find the breakdown by sex. I don’t think it’s actually anywhere close to that high in reality. Frankly, the more I look at the survey methodology, the more I think it’s garbage.

The 3-4% is the number I heard about in studies in the 1990s, Mark Regnerus also puts the number around 3-4%,
The CDC for years has estimated that men having sex with men (at risk for AIDS and HepC) is around 2%.
The UCLA study was at a total of 1.9%. But even in that study, California was only at 3%. And that’s with San Francisco at 9%–the only place in the country that approached the 10% figure that was touted for years by activists.
So I am inclined to agree with your assessment. The other studies I have seen suggest that 7% of young women who identify as gay will move to “bisexual” or “straight” as they hit their 30s. May explain De Blasio’s wife.
A propos of Regnerus, the problem I had with his study was his labeling of divorced women who had even a passing fling with a woman (and then returned to men) as “lesbian mothers.” The truth is that in the period he was studying (70s-end of 90s), some women tried alternatives especially if they sought out feminism or had been badly abused in the marriage. The mothers were not interviewed, so we had no way of knowing why or how long these affairs were. What Regnerus did show was that children who knew that their mothers had at least one same sex encounter had more of a tendency to question their own sexuality.
Follow the money. A lot of straights have figured out that it pays to be bent a little. That is how a pragmatist would see it.
I also see a lot of laziness here. In Portland, the worlds lesbian kingdom, we have become a last bastion for women who are unable to compete effectively in the modern hetero world. So they come to Portland, dye their hair red or pink or yeller and get a bunch of meaningless tattoos, invest heavily in Ben and Jerry’s, and suddenly they are celebrated like no time before in their lives. Heck, they even have their own month, which seems to be stretching pretty deep into July if you ask me.. Compare that to the life of a spinster hetero? The real downside is that by lowering the bar, they have in effect lowered the bar. Competition keeps the standards much higher.
Jan Ian said “married young and then retired.” I think the modern lyric would be along the lines of “transitioned young and then retired.”
In a way I envy them, because as a straight white christian conservative male I am out busting my butt every day. Life is hard when you aren’t given stuff just because you check a box.

But basically they’ve seen and done VERY little in the real world
They are very impressionable.
The secret to raising kids is to back up the values with actions. Kids pay little attention to what you say, and focus on what you do. A kid who has never seen their parent go to work is going to have a very rough time in life.
People with weak minds are very susceptible to mindlessly copying what others are doing.
