Welcome to the World of Postmodern Medicine

Welcome to the World of Postmodern Medicine

A disturbing look at the “queering of medicine”, policies impacted by climate pseudoscience, and the push for using hospice from hospital chains.

Dr. Erica Li is a pediatrician practicing in the state of Washington, as well as teaching medical students from three medical schools and interns from four residency programs.

Li recently published a chilling piece in Substack about the current state of medicine in this country, which she referred to as being “postmodern.”

Postmodern medicine seems to have a particular foothold in the West, especially in the United States, where it has become institutionalized. It is relatively new but is embedded in multiple American medical societies and medical schools. While it leverages the same technologies as Modern medicine, thereby superficially resembling it, it fundamentally seeks to dismantle Modern medicine’s underlying philosophy.

While Postmodern medicine is being propagated across American medical schools through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion bureaucracies, nothing exemplifies Postmodernity more than the gender ideology that drives American “gender-affirming” model of care.

I wish to strongly advocate for Modern medicine and urge readers to resist the ideological shift towards the Postmodernizing or “queering” of my profession. It is crucial to clarify that I am a steadfast supporter of LGBT civil rights, as I support civil rights for all Americans, and I strongly advocate for high-quality Modern medical care for sexual minorities.

However, I reject the overmedicalization of children propagated by many gender activists. At its core, Postmodern medicine is as far removed from Modern medicine as witch-burning. It poses serious risks to patient welfare and should be vehemently resisted.

While Li focuses on the “queering of medicine,” Politico just published a glowing piece on changes that hospitals are making in the name of the pseudoscience of “climate change.” The piece notes that the Biden team is doing its own part to push hospitals to overhaul their practices; given the administration’s numerous failures, its attempt to interfere with decisions being made at hospitals that impact patient care is disturbing, indeed.

Here is a sample:

The drive to reimagine anesthesia is part of a broader if belated effort to decarbonize U.S. health care, from the operating room to the cafeteria to the gardens and grounds. It’s a push spurred on by both medical professionals and Washington policymakers, who feel increased pressure to act amid the dangers of climate change and who acknowledge health care has been slow to engage on sustainability.

The health sector is responsible for 8.5 percent of U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, methane and ozone — an outsized impact compared to the rest of the world. (Globally, health care systems contribute roughly 4.6 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions.) Without huge new efforts, the U.S. will have trouble reaching its ambitious emissions reduction goals.

Within American health care, hospitals are the biggest source of emissions, not to mention generators of enormous amounts of nonrecyclable trash from all the single-use, disposable devices and supplies that head swiftly into landfills and incinerators.

Approaches to anesthesia will be based on climate change assertions that have not been borne out over the past three decades and are not based on real global weather pattern considerations.

Much of the reason for the use of disposable items is concern about the spread of germs. And while there are sound and practical reasons for considering sanitizing and disinfection, I am not convinced that the people in charge of “sustainability” will be as concerned about humans as about virtue signaling. Especially as they seem unwilling to consider reasonable concerns.

…[A]ctivists and sustainability teams want more. More tools. More metrics. More financial help.

Some advocates would like to see the federal government impose tough regulations and requirements to force change. Others suggest building incentives into Medicare payments to hospitals, which would give a government-imprimatur on health care greening without creating a new mandate. Climate benchmarks could be included in HHS’ “conditions for participation,” the practices that health providers must follow to be eligible for Medicare or Medicaid payments.

Any such steps, though, would be challenging in today’s political climate, with Republicans strongly opposed to efforts to the Biden administration’s efforts to tackle climate change.

Hopefully, the policies will continue to be challenged, as they are based on myth.

Finally, postmodern medicine focuses on the bottom line and ‘statistics’ showing how awesome it is. However, it appears patients are being pushed into hospice early at HCA Healthcare Facilities to improve the numbers. HCA operates 182 hospitals in the U.S. and the U.K. and is the nation’s largest hospital chain.

Now, new criticisms are arising related to HCA’s palliative and end-of-life care for patients, according to some physicians and nurses who have worked in its facilities. They say HCA officials press staff to persuade families of ailing patients to initiate such care, as Salas says she experienced with her daughter.

Although this can harm patients by withdrawing lifesaving treatments, the push can benefit HCA two ways, the doctors and nurses said, and an internal hospital document confirms. It reduces in-hospital mortality rates, a closely watched quality measure, and can free up a hospital bed more quickly for HCA, potentially generating more insurance reimbursements from a new patient.

I have had three significant hospital stays in my life and have been grateful for the benefits of modern medicine. Unfortunately, as I enter into the next phase, I dread what may await me.

WHY?

It’s an attempt to declaw at least for some readers the initial rejection of the piece by a false ad hominem argument.

It won’t stop the true believing kool aid drinkers from gathering wood for the witches pyre. It may allow those otherwise open to persuasion to continue reading, absorb the argument and take it seriously.

The LGB need to distance themselves from the rest of the alphabet mafia, especially the “T”

You could always go back to beating the stuffing out of us, or, have the cops do it. Fire is from our jobs. Burn us out of our homes.

I am “G”. I am just sick of all of this trans nonsense and militancy as everybody else. But as for going back to the old ways, I think that ship has sailed.

The alphabet goop after LGB was a leech that attached itself to the mainstream…. “sympathy” compromised integrity of the movement. Maybe the ship will sink?

Pretty much the same way that the meth and fentanyl addicts jumped onto the medical marijuana party wagon. On a plus note, I am looking at a 75mm pack howitzer as my new carry piece. Go big or go home I always say. Now to find a bigger pack.

You can drink a French 75 with your French 75.

I was telling my wife that T-34/85 (see your 75 and raise you 10) was for sale. She asked if I wanted to buy it (now THAT is a wife!)… That was SO tempting but would have to buy a trailer to haul that 30 ton sucker around. Inconvenient when not campaigning.

We used to walk around the Chino airport and watch all the warbirds being worked on. The classic was Fighter Jets Limited. They had a tandem Italian F-104 at one time. The real fun story was when they purchased several Naval MiG 15’s and 17s from China and when they uncrated them, they were still fully armed with 30 mm cannon. A very quick call to ATF cleared that up… rats.

What the ship has sailed on is the alphabet people group being considered anything other than a predatory, fatally narcissistic destructive violent bigoted group of people. The few that have the courage to speak out against what that group has become are quickly destroyed.

Being chanted at “pride” events and protests….
“We’re here we’re queer, we’re coming for your children”

…. There is absolutely NO WAY to come back from that ever…

Because there are gays and lesbians, and supporters of gays and lesbians, who are otherwise on our side. They don’t support any of these trans rights activists and child groomers. So why alienate them?

As a former mentor at Hopkins said to my health care economist ex-wife in 1995, “If you think that health care is expensive now, just wait until it is free.”

If you can’t sell something with economics or logic, then just pull in climate change as a reason. This is the new go-to since “if it saves just one child’s life” no longer works, I guess.

The real reason though is that someone who can actually do math just figured out that they can’t pay for all of the things that they promised, so now they are using climate change as the rationale for instituting rationing, which all of the smart people knew was inevitable.

“” “if it saves just one child’s life” no longer works””

They sort of had to move away from that argument when they were trying to justify partial birth infanticide.

I would expect malpractice insurers to react by either significantly raising insurance rates for medical practices or denying coverage to professionals who embrace this twisted, postmodern standard of care. How can you insure a professional who claims that their primary concern is the health of the climate?

Sounds like a good time to be a medical malpractice attorney.

    Capitalist-Dad in reply to Q. | June 25, 2023 at 8:45 am

You forget that insurance is a highly regulated industry and highly susceptible to governmental extortion.

So happy to have retired from medicine before the transgender issues and DEI have become so dominant.

Regarding EOL (end of life) care, I worked in rehab and nursing centers for the last 15 years of my career, retiring in 2020. By and large patients and families seemed very reluctant to embrace palliative and/or hospice care; and those who did often waited until hours to a couple days before death. I have seen people have CPR performed on them who were in their 90’s or who had terminal cancer or other terminal conditions. So many patients were sent back to the hospitals, which are designed to manage acute conditions, as their chronic conditions deteriorated, thus often dying in the hospital and being forced to endure endless poking, prodding, instrumentation and radiological procedures, being deprived of the opportunity to die peacefully, either at home or in a nursing facility.

I often related to staff and colleagues this adage: You only get one chance to die, so you have to get it right the first time.

alaskabob in reply to bev. | June 24, 2023 at 4:36 pm

The “stigma” of end of life care on one side and the $$$$ push to cash in on end of life by providers.

MajorWood in reply to bev. | June 24, 2023 at 7:28 pm

So when I was getting my pacemaker upgraded (there is a good CRT option out there, BTW) I asked the fellow who was doing the consent form “when you disconnect the lead pacer #1, am I going into the tunnel, ….., again.” We laughed. But I know that it was in the back of his mind for the rest of the week.

henrybowman in reply to bev. | June 24, 2023 at 9:33 pm

“You only get one chance to die, so you have to get it right the first time.”

I’m going for more like the Rasputin model.

1. Have been in an HCA facility three times. Not happy after #1, swore after #2 never again, #3 emergency admit and had no choice. Night and day difference from Advent Health (formerly Florida Hospital).

2. VA: forms now have “Male”, “Female”, “Identify As” choices. In my clinic the Stars and Stripes hangs in usual limp fashion on the staff while a gigantic Pride flag is spread out flattened on the wall behind it to the left and an equally large and prominent Juneteenth flag to the right. I told them any other June appointments would be delayed or by Video call. Looking at that abortion and violation of the flag code AT A VETERAN FACILITY once is enough. One nation, one flag to represent ALL of us, Period.

After the Covid lies, the “gender dysphoria” scam and general (and terminal) wokeness, the bond of trust between patient and medical provider has been irretrievably destroyed. You can’t know if your treatment decisions are being made based on medical necessity or political bias. So much for modern – or “Postmodern” – medicine.

Postmodernism has gotten a bad name from leftists, who missed its point, which is roughly that authority also comes from literary effects, but not that it’s therefore illegitimate.

The good postmodernists marvel at the way a topic and authority on the topic mutually come to life, but it’s a literary study. Generally these postmodernists love what they deconstruct rather than opposing it. It’s not a debunking.

gibbie in reply to rhhardin. | June 24, 2023 at 8:06 pm

Modernism: The utterly false belief that science is the only source of reliable knowledge.
Postmodernism: The contrary, but equally false belief that if there is no certain knowledge, then there is no knowledge at all.
Postmodernism has value as a critique of Modernism, but overreached.

rhhardin in reply to gibbie. | June 24, 2023 at 8:44 pm

Postmodernism is interested in what knowledge is, not in denying it. A positivist might be disappointed with what supports knowledge as apparently being inadequate, but it’s very robust in fact nevertheless, which is one of the cool things about it.

Certainty is more about faith, which is something you can hold onto, say lovingly.

Also recently retire from teaching physicians. My last lecture was on the unfortunate move from evidence based medicine to emotionally based medicine. If you get to ask questions its an education, if not, it’s an indoctrination

If there’s one thing, at my age, that makes me wake up in a cold sweat, it’s the thought of being in a hospital bed with straps and tubes holding me in place to where I can’t get up and get away before they kill me.

45 years as a nurse, saw it coming , glad I’m out

Choose your Dr carefully, your life really does depend on it

To meet postmodern global population ideals, disposal of all the bodies would require creative logistics. Burning is probably off the table, Perhaps this time, the final solution will be sustainable composting?

“The health sector is responsible for 8.5 percent of U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, methane and ozone — an outsized impact compared to the rest of the world.”

Here we go again, looking for our lost keys under the streetlight, instead of down China Alley, where they actually are, because it’s just too damn dark to ever find them there.

I guess once we’ve become inured to a country where the primary objective of politicians is bo longer to protect the rights of their citizens, a country where the primary objective of doctors is no longer to protect the health of their patients seems perfectly acceptable.

Interesting article. It appears that lefties DO screw up everything they touch and medicine is the latest especially using the climate hoax as justification. My question is what will it take for our populace to say ENOUGH? Will it take thousands of unnecessary family deaths due to medical incompetence?

“It is crucial to clarify that I am a steadfast supporter of LGBT civil rights, as I support civil rights for all Americans, and I strongly advocate for high-quality Modern medical care for sexual minorities.”

These Dumb-o-crat idiots can never proffer even a scintilla of criticism against their peers and comrades, without issuing the usual nauseating, Maoist, ideological loyalty declaration. It’s disgusting. These people are feckless.
