Ukraine Dam Damaged, Towns and Villages Already Underwater
Thankfully the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia is okay.
Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for destroying the Nova Kakhovka dam along the Dnipro River in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine.
The dam holds the same amount of water that’s in the Great Salt Lake.
This is horrible. Authorities evacuated ten villages while 16,000 people reside in the “critical zone.”
Thankfully the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia is okay.
But what caused the damage? Did someone bomb it? Could it possibly be because of wear and tear plus recent fighting?
- Why would Russia damage it? The dam sits in a Russian-occupied area and provides necessities to Crimea.
- Why would Ukraine damage it? It inhibits the ability to reach the southern region and Crimea.
Ukrainian officials claimed Russia’s 205th Motorized Rifle Brigade blew up the dam.
Russia blamed Kyiv:
The Kremlin has claimed that the attack on a major dam in Moscow-occupied southern Ukraine was “deliberate sabotage” by Kyiv, which wanted to cut off Russian-occupied Crimea from water.
Russia and Ukraine have traded accusations over damage to the major Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River.
“We can already unequivocally declare (this was) deliberate sabotage by the Ukrainian side,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, claiming that one of the aims was to deprive Crimea of water.
He said the Kremlin “decisively rejected” accusations by Ukraine and the West that Moscow’s forces were behind a blast that caused the damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the “world must react” to the Kakhovka dam attack, blaming Russia for the breach which has caused extensive flooding.
“The world must react,” he said, adding that Russia had carried out “an internal explosion of the structures” of the plant at 2:50 am local time (2350 GMT).
“This is just one Russian act of terrorism. This is just one Russian war crime,” he added, accusing Russia of committing an act of “ecocide.”
“Russia is at war with life, with nature, with civilisation,” he added. “Russia must leave Ukrainian land and must be held fully accountable for its terror.”

Russia set it to explode last October should Ukraine try to take back the rest of Kherson. This only benefits Russia.
Check out last year’s test of live missile test strike by Ukraine on dam to assess what needed to blow the dam….something they publicly talked about as a last ditch effort. Russia has been winning recently and the dam being blown not needed in their grinding up of Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine has benefitted from this far more than Russia. Russia controlled the sluice gates, and could control the water level to their defensive advantage. This mess has wrecked a lot of Russian defensive positions along the Dnepr and threatened irrigation to the Crimea (which is in their backfield).
Most media coverage of this has been lame/disingenuous the say the least–the agitprop continues. And don’t forget the Great Big Ukrainian Offensive is supposed to be starting but so far only some expensive probes have been undertaken. It’s all very odd.
It is incorrect to say that Russia benefits. First off the blowing of this dam was part of Ukrainian operational planning that was already in public. Secondly the flooding is going to disrupt the defense works the Russians emplaced along the river as well as displacement of troops from prepared defensive positions. Third it threatens, to some degree, the operation of the Nuke plant which Russian forces control and in the event of serious cooling issue would cause havoc with Russian troop dispositions. Fourth it potentially impacts availability of water in Crimea which the Russians control. Fifth it gets the news of the failed (for now) Ukrainian offensive out of the news cycle.
In sum there are lots of reasons to suspect the Ukrainian govt is behind this attack. The Ukrainian govt allegedly ran a test of this already in preparation. Lastly it’s good propaganda for Ukraine to convince more gullible people that the Ukrainian govt are the good guys. There ain’t any good guys in this conflict.
Ukraine is not worth my tax dollars. Even though, without my tax dollars, Russia would be holding Kiev, or maintaining a puppet president in Ukraine since 2014.
I simply don’t care who holds the Donbass, or how many nazis dance with jews in Ukraine, or who controls Crimea, or how many penis sketches Z has done. The only geopolitical interests we have there are to fuck with Russia, and frankly, we’ve got more moral reason to fuck with China, or even India.
But the war machine must be fed with blood. And I guess they got tired of watching their weapons work against goat herders, and wanted more “boom” and less “baaaaa”.
Peter Zeihan has been talking about the dam for months. He identified it as a major weak spot for Crimea. That reservoir holds the water that Crimea needs to plant and irrigate. He expected sooner or later the Ukrainians would destroy it.
Look for the Russians to up their attack on Ukrainian infrastructure. The negotiated access for food ships to go into Ukrainian ports is going to be revoked.

How very convenient for Pretty Boy Zelenskyy. Right when support of the Ukraine war is waning as U.S. citizens turn to the rapidly approaching 2024 presidential elections a Ukrainian dam is blown up so that he can plead for action and more aid from Western countries. How very odd.

Coups have consequences both in Ukraine and in the US.
They kinda sorta already did begin on Monday but were decisively defeated in the engagement. It was more a recon in force but they didn’t fare well. The Ukrainian govt is also partnered up with anti Kremlin groups in Russia who’s members are, no surprise, nazi sympathizers at best and full blown nazi at worst. Used US equipment and munitions supplied by Ukraine as well which the Ukrainian govt assured the US they wouldn’t do.
They kinda sorta did and predictably had their hind ends handed to them by Russia. Time Zelenskyy admitted they kinda sorta should have negotiated a peace deal with Russia. Far too late for that though.

Scorched Earth. Zelenskyy is quite aware that he cannot win this war. So he’s going to destroy any and all infrastructure that might benefit Russia. Even if said destruction isn’t in Ukraine’s best interests.

Let’s all agree that this is a humanitarian and ecological disaster. The geo-economic and political fallout will extend far beyond Ukraine.

As far as ZNPP, at present, conditions remain stable. However, the power plant, Europe’s largest, depends on the reservoir to cool fuel rods presently in the reactor and cooling ponds. Should the reservoir’s water dip below the plant intakes, there is a risk of a reactor meltdown, even though the reactors are shut down, or a radioactive release from fuel rods in the cooling ponds. Chornobyl on a much larger scale.
At this time, it doesn’t matter who did what. Now we need to address the disaster.
What happens in Ukraine does not stay in Ukraine.
Why now?
Ukraine is about to launch its spring offensive, the objective of which is widely expected to be to cross this river to cut off Russia’s land connection to Crimea.
The area in which the offensive was expected to be launched is now flooded.
That tells you everything you need to know about who is responsible for destroying the dam.
I have said it before and will say it again. Destruction of dams is a legitimate form of warfare.
The same is true for nuclear power plants.
The war between Russia and Ukraine must stop. The US must stop funding Ukraine. Ukraine is clearly belligerent.
Russia has a legitimate interest in maintaining some sort of border security. Those that disagree should read about the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis,’.

Russia isn’t doing this as a legitimate form of warfare. They are sore losers doing it as a scorched earth/genocide which has been a feature of their entire “Special Military Operation.” Any temporary military advantage is secondary.
In the last couple of decades Russia has invaded Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine multiple times, Chechnya multiple times and has supported other evil nations and terrorist groups. The only true way to stop this invasion is to defeat them. Surrendering and throwing Ukraine under the bus will reward Russia and enable and incentivize further evil.
