Conservative Republican Mark Robinson, the current lieutenant governor of North Carolina, has formally announced his campaign to run for state governor.

Robinson is very popular among people on the right for his unapologetic conservatism and staunch support of the Second Amendment.

This Associated Press report is surprisingly fair if you can overlook the typo in the word ‘needs’ which sticks out like a sore thumb:

Conservative Robinson joins race for N. Carolina governorRepublican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson formally entered next year’s gubernatorial race at a rally Saturday, with the sharp-spoken social conservative saying North Carolina neads a leader like him who can relate to the challlenges and desires of working people.Elected the state’s first Black lieutenant governor in 2020 in his frst run for political office, Robinson would make similar history if he wins the governorship.“I’m running for governor because we the people of North Carolina need someone who understands us,” Robinson told roughly 1,000 supporters at the event at a speedway in Alamance County, about a half-hour from where he grew up. “We don’t need another politician who’s spent their life climbing the political ladder.”Robinson’s entry was anticipated for well over a year, with the Greensboro native heavily hinting at a run in speeches and fundraising appeals. The 54-year-old also released an autobiography that talked about a childhood of poverty, financial challenges as an adult, his religious beliefs and his late entry into politics.

In this campaign launch video, Robinson talks about his upbringing and how it shaped his political views:

The liberal outlet Politico wasted no time going after Robinson, highlighting every left-wing talking point:

The GOP’s new electability problem: North CarolinaRepublicans are on the verge of wiping out what remains of Democrats’ political power in North Carolina. The only thing they need is for the likely nominee for governor to not blow it up.On Saturday, when the state’s lightning rod Republican lieutenant governor, Mark Robinson, formally announces his gubernatorial campaign, polls suggest he will instantly become the frontrunner for the nomination. He’ll saddle the GOP with a laundry list of his past public controversies — from agreeing with antisemitic remarks about the global economy to homophobic musings that children shouldn’t learn about “homosexuality or any of that filth.”In a state where surveys show a majority of voters favor keeping abortion legal, he has compared the procedure to murder. And even some Republicans in North Carolina see him as a liability.

Robinson also mentioned his launch on Twitter:

He will be a formidable candidate for governor.
