San Francisco Board of Supervisors Open to Idea of $5 Million Payouts for Reparations

San Francisco Board of Supervisors Open to Idea of $5 Million Payouts for Reparations

“Payments of $5 million to every eligible Black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.”

The San Francisco Reparations Committee has recommended payouts of $5 million to each eligible black resident of the city, despite the fact that slavery never existed there.

Now the Reparations Committee has had an opportunity to present their recommendations to the city’s Board of Supervisors, and they think it’s a great idea.

The Associated Press reports:

San Francisco board open to reparations with $5M payouts

Payments of $5 million to every eligible Black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.

These were some of the more than 100 recommendations made by a city-appointed reparations committee tasked with the thorny question of how to atone for centuries of slavery and systemic racism. And the San Francisco Board of Supervisors hearing the report for the first time Tuesday voiced enthusiastic support for the ideas listed, with some saying money should not stop the city from doing the right thing.

Several supervisors said they were surprised to hear pushback from politically liberal San Franciscans apparently unaware that the legacy of slavery and racist policies continues to keep Black Americans on the bottom rungs of health, education and economic prosperity, and overrepresented in prisons and homeless populations.

“Those of my constituents who lost their minds about this proposal, it’s not something we’re doing or we would do for other people. It’s something we would do for our future, for everybody’s collective future,” said Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, whose district includes the heavily LGBTQ Castro neighborhood.

The draft reparations plan, released in December, is unmatched nationwide in its specificity and breadth. The committee hasn’t done an analysis of the cost of the proposals, but critics have slammed the plan as financially and politically impossible. An estimate from Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, which leans conservative, has said it would cost each non-Black family in the city at least $600,000.

This isn’t based on math or history. It’s all about feelings and social justice.

FOX News reports:

An estimated 50,000 Black people live in San Francisco, but it’s unclear who among them would be eligible for reparations. Under the committee’s draft reparations plan, a person must be at least 18 years old and identified as “Black/African American” in public documents for at least 10 years. Eligible people must also meet two of eight other criteria, such as living in San Francisco during a certain time period or descending from someone incarcerated for the police war on drugs.

Regardless of what the criteria might ultimately become, several board members have expressed concerns about how large lump-sum payments would impact the city’s budget, which is already facing a massive estimated deficit of $728 million.

“There wasn’t a math formula,” Eric McDonnell, chair of the reparations committee, recently told the Washington Post, describing the process of coming to its $5 million per person recommendation. “It was a journey for the committee towards what could represent a significant enough investment in families to put them on this path to economic well-being, growth and vitality that chattel slavery and all the policies that flowed from it destroyed.”

Would it be worth it to watch the city of San Francisco bankrupt itself?

Just how did they miss a new Cadillac every year ?

I hope those payouts come directly from the politician’s pockets and go to all of the business owners that lost their business due to hysterical Covid lockdowns.

The fact some are still wearing masks tells me all I need to know.

I appreciate it when they Identify themselves even before you meet them.

What you mean is a money grab. The people really affected (Asians and natives) get nothing while one race claim( Liberalfonia was always a “free” start) victimhood and gets it all.

Asians and Irish built the transcontinental railroad.

Japanese ,a few that are still alive and were citizens, were rounded up and locked up during WW2.
California wasn’t a slave state and that ended almost two centuries ago.
I’m thinking all of these people are on drugs, hard drugs.

No mention of mules appeared in the order, but some of the formerly enslaved population were granted Army mules, resulting in this reparations program being widely known as “40 acres and a mule.”

Of course, any slave that got these has already gotten reparations.

This is all unconstitutional anyways. It is an unconstitutional racial preference. However, flee SF now if you can. San Francisco has a population of less than a million people. Assuming 10% receives reparations that means 900k people will have to cover the 90k x $5 million price tag. That equals a total of $450 billion, or $500 thousand per non-black resident.

FLEE!!

You did not account for the tsunami of blacks from all over the world who will come to try to claim a chunk of that. Mind you, I think watching San Francisco and California itself [at least from the coast to 100 miles inland] self-destruct would be bloody wonderful.

I agree it is unconstitutional, however, only red voters should be allowed to flee. Blue voters should be required to stay there, pay for and suffer the consequence of their blue vote. You should pay for what you knew you were voting for. I have a woke family member in CA who hates Republicans and goes to liberal protests. I say stay there and reap what you sowed.

Five million in Monopoly money, and a Monopoly house. I’ll go for that.

I can understand the reparations committee being bat sh*t crazy, but if every elected county board supervisor who voices support for this should be recalled or be tossed out at the next election.

Every County Board Supervisor who supports this will be re-elected by a vote greater than the number of humans, pets, and wild animals in their district. This is San Francisco, after all.

$5 million per person resulting in untold billions of dollars as a present and clear unfunded budget liability and the numbers and long-term impact haven’t been crunched, yet. Is this the equivalent of political NIL money?

The Reparations Committee advises the Board of Supervisors, the Mayor, the Human Rights Commission, and the public on the development of a San Francisco Reparations Plan.

This committee has no authority to do anything but hold meetings and issue ridiculous press releases which are designed simply to keep blacks on the Dem plantation hoping for a big payout.

It is shamefully selling tickets for a superlotto that will never take place, blowing sunshine up the butts of people who can least afford the deceit.

jimincalif in reply to Gosport. | March 15, 2023 at 3:32 pm

Yes, no authority to do anything, but they keep ratcheting up the number and the expectations. When the inevitable letdown comes, cities will burn again. The higher the expectations, the hotter and brighter the flames.

Apparently San Francisco is counting on a Federal bailout of some kind to be the source of the loot. It might be for “infrastructure” or “disruptions caused by climate change” or any of a hundred other fables.

Ironically, blacks living in SF will see little or none of the money. The bulk of it will end up where you would expect: the pockets of Democrat politicians and activists.

San Francisco, Reparations, and the Racist Cruelty of Empty Promises

Qualifying black residents would receive an annual stipend of $97,000 for the next 250 years, have their personal debt wiped out, the “right” to buy a local home for one dollar, and enjoy a one-time lump-sum payment of [activate Dr. Evil voice] FIVE MILLION DOLLARS.

San Francisco will never pay these reparations. Just to make the stipend happen, the city would have to raise 50% more revenue or cut services on everything else by the same amount. It’s impossible to raise that much tax revenue, and no lender would look at those terms and loan City Hall a cent.

Gosport in reply to Gosport. | March 15, 2023 at 6:37 pm

Note how they slipped the word “qualifying” in there. That’s another shatstorm waiting to happen.

I can’t wait for this not to happen! I’m sure some people in Ca. will promise ‘consequences’.

Don’t capitalize black.

When do folks get their money and what happens when/if they are denied these funds? That’s the better question.

inspectorudy | March 15, 2023 at 1:11 pm

Watch the black migration to SF. Think of all the white people who will now declare that they are really black and have whip marks on their backs to prove it. They have taken one of my favorite cities in the world and turned it into a sh#thole.

Chuckin Houston in reply to inspectorudy. | March 15, 2023 at 4:50 pm

The be honest San Francisco has been a sh*thole for some time. The city’s motto should be “San Francisco – Still Proudly No. 1 in No. 2”

Yeah. This will work out well.

“Payments of $5 million to every eligible Black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.”
Ha ha ha ha! Dem math sure am rayciss!
But if you pays your dollar, you gets a free bridge.
NOW how much would you pay?

BierceAmbrose | March 15, 2023 at 2:53 pm

Paying for people, per head, based on the color of their skin.

I feel like there’s history of something like this, that was stopped.

Paying people who were not injured by taxing people who did not do any injury.

How many members of the SF Board of Supervisors would be eligible for this windfall?

In which alternate universe could this possibly be a good idea? Instead of motivating families to succeed in society, they want to hand out a financial disincentive for doing so. And this guaranteed income of $97K —- which actually doesn’t sound like that much in SF —- for doing what exactly?

Should this actually pass, it will likely hurt blacks more than it will help them.

Are you suggesting that white people residing in California receive the Paul Pelosi treatment–the SF way to Arkancide people?

Is it too late for me to move to S.F., and to identify as black?

gnome in reply to Michael. | March 16, 2023 at 6:09 am

Yes, but it’s never too late to move there and contribute to the tax base they need to get the money.

How can they limit this to Black people? Isn’t that blatantly unconstitutional?

Wouldn’t the fair solution be to pay each of them $5 million and withhold a “windfall profits tax” on reparation payments of 99.999999% from each payment–just send them $5 each and call it a day?

malclave in reply to Disgusted. | March 15, 2023 at 9:08 pm

Well, they want to be free of tax burdens.

So the city couldn’t tax them like that, but Sacramento and Washington could.

gnome in reply to Disgusted. | March 16, 2023 at 6:11 am

I calculated that percentage out – it actually comes to 5 cents each. Still too much unearned wealth for some to handle.

Constitutional law experts — what’s the constitutionality of this kind of idiotic “reparations” conceit? Handing out massive monetary payouts to a segment of the population exclusively based upon skin pigmentation/ethnicity, seems blatantly in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

I assume we’d see a slew of lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of this idiocy, if it was ever enacted.

    Reader45 in reply to guyjones. | March 15, 2023 at 10:05 pm

I would like to hear the answer to your question too. I would also like to hear how the reparations can be handed out without a tax consequence.

I think $5M is way too low. It should be at least $100M.

Reparations for black slavery in SF are only the opening salvo.

What possibly could be the ultimate goal of the California progressives?

Given the influx of illegal immigrants across the southern border, reparations for all Hispanics due to President James K. Polk’s Mexican-American War from the border dispute resulting in the annexation of Texas and California, and everything in between.

Think of all the street feces they could clean up with this money, probably almost half of it!

William Downey | March 16, 2023 at 9:55 am

Reparations not only make fiscal sense, but they also defy common sense.

With what money? Also, California was NEVER a slave state. Slavery was outlawed by Mexico in 1837 and California (along with most of the South West) was Mexican.

And when CA was admitted to the US in 1850, it was a Free State. Now, that doesn’t mean some people didn’t illegally keep slaves. But generally speaking, that when caught, the slaves were freed and slavers sanctioned and that was cleared up by 1861.

But even today, you will have people in the US keep others in slavery. There have been a very small number of people in the US convicted of keeping others in slavery, even in modern times.

All good points… which don’t matter. Because this is a scam to make the con artists on the San Francisco Reparations Committee look good and get gullible black people voting for them. They know that not a dime will be paid out. No millions per person, no $1 houses, nothing. They’ll make some noise for a while and then the matter will quietly disappear.
