The Detroit school board is in the process of renaming a handful of schools, a new favorite pastime of progressives in education.
One of the schools they are renaming is the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine, which is named for Republican Dr. Ben Carson, who ran for president in 2016 and then worked in the Trump administration.
Do you think Carson’s work in the Trump administration had something to do with this?
Bridge Michigan reports:
Detroit renames school honoring Ben Carson, removing honor for Trump appointeeThe Detroit school board struck a compromise between students at East English Village Preparatory Academy and the alumni of the closed Finney High School, in a debate over whether to change the former’s name. The school, which sits on the grounds that once housed Finney High, will now be named East English Village Preparatory Academy at Finney…Also Tuesday night, the board approved changing the name of the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine to Crockett Midtown High School of Science and Medicine. The push to change the name came as its namesake — a renowned neurosurgeon — courted controversy during his tenure as housing secretary in the Trump administration. There was no debate about the name change at Tuesday’s meeting. An overwhelming majority of students, alumni, staff, parents, and community favored a name change. The new name recognizes Dr. Ethelene Crockett, the first African American woman in Michigan to become board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.
This is cancel culture, plain and simple.
Andrew Hughes worked in the Department of Housing and Urban Development with Carson. He and dozens of other people from the department came to Carson’s defense in an opinion piece for FOX News:
We worked for Dr. Ben Carson. We know Dr. Ben Carson. Canceling him is just not right.Education is the gateway to opportunity. It’s the medicine that cures most ails, and it is the means by which we equip our next generations with the tools they need to confront the challenges of the future. The schools we construct and the names of the individuals we honor on our school buildings stand as a good barometer for the sort of people we want our young people to emulate. That’s why we are so perturbed that in mid-November, the Detroit School Board voted to change the name of the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine despite an administrative recommendation and student poll to keep the name as is…We, former staff for Dr. Carson at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, write to set the record straight and celebrate the incredible accomplishments of the good doctor, with the hope that more focus is shined on students and less on perceived political slights…Dr. Carson is the epitome of the American dream. Only in our country could a poor boy from the inner city grow up to be a world-renowned neurosurgeon, presidential candidate, and Cabinet secretary. He personifies the very promise of America.
Lots of others are also standing up for Carson:
This isn’t right and it shouldn’t stand.
