Sanctuary New York City Mayor Declares Emergency Over Migrants Taking Sanctuary In NYC

New York City proudly is a Sanctuary City, and the proudest of all was recently elected Mayor Eric Adams, who declared when running for Mayor:

“We should protect our immigrants.” Period.Yes, New York City will remain a sanctuary city under an Adams administration. #EricOnNBC

That was then. THIS IS NOW.

Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency on Friday as the number of people in New York City’s overwhelmed homeless shelters headed for a record amid the influx of thousands of migrants from Latin America. He called for state and federal funding to help pay for housing and services, and urged the federal government to allow newly arrived asylum seekers to work legally and to slow the northward flow of migrants from the border. He spoke as the population of the city’s main shelter system, which stood at 61,379 on Thursday, was set to break the record of 61,415 set in 2019. At least nine more migrant buses arrived on Friday.Mr. Adams said that the migrants were on pace to send the shelter population soaring above 100,000 and that the influx could cost the city $1 billion in the current fiscal year alone.“We need help, and we need it now,” Mr. Adams said in a speech.

Who is to blame? Not the Biden adminstration, which violating its constitutional duty to faithfully execute the immigration laws (should be Count 1 in Biden Articles of Impeachment, IMO). No, according to the Mayor, it’s that sneaky Greg Abbott:

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) declared a state of emergency on Friday to respond to migrants arriving in the city on buses primarily from Texas. Why it matters: Adams said at least 17,000 asylum seekers have been bused to New York City from other parts of the country since April and claimed that many of the people didn’t know where they were going when they boarded the buses.

Full presser (transcript):

… Thousands of asylum seekers have been bused into New York City and simply dropped off without notice, coordination or care and more are arriving every day. This crisis is not of our own making, but one that will affect everyone in this city, now and in the months ahead….We have not asked for this. There was never any agreement to take on the job of supporting thousands of asylum seekers. This responsibility was simply handed to us without warning as buses began showing up. There’s no playbook for this, no precedent….The time for aid to New York is now. We need help from the federal government, help from the state of New York. New York City is doing our part and now others must step up and join us. From our federal partners we need legislation that will allow these asylum seekers to legally work now, not in six months. We need a realistic decompression strategy at the border that will slow the outflow of asylum seekers. We need a coordinated effort to move asylum seekers to other cities in this country to ensure everyone is doing their part. Congress must pass emergency financial relief for our city and others.

The Honey Badger don’t give a ….

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott defiantly declared Friday that he will continue to ship migrants from the southern border to the Big Apple — as Mayor Eric Adams issued a state of emergency over the flood of asylum-seekers.“Sanctuary cities like New York City experience a FRACTION of what Texas border communities face every day,” Abbott seethed on Twitter. “We’ll continue busing migrants to NYC, DC, & Chicago to relieve our overwhelmed border towns until [President] Biden does his job to secure the border.”
