Report: Pelosi to Visit Taiwan Despite Threats From China

“She’s definitely coming. The only variable is whether she spends the night in Taipei.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi embarked on her tour of Asia, stopping in Singapore.

A visit to Taiwan has dominated the diplomatic trip, with China threatening the US if Pelosi steps foot in the country.

China considers Taiwan as its own. The Communist country told the U.S. to abide by the “One-China” policy. The accepts the “One-China” policy, which recognizes “the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and de-recognizes the Republic of China (ROC) in 1979.”

However, the “One-China” policy does not include Taiwan.

The Liberty Times, a pro-ruling party paper in Taiwan, reported Pelosi would arrive on Tuesday and spend the night (I used Google translate):

It is widely rumored in foreign media and Taiwanese media circles that after Pelosi’s visit to Malaysia, [s]he will take a flight to Taiwan and arrive as soon as tomorrow night. And there is also news that the delegation has booked 2 hotels, which may stay at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Xinyi District or the Marriott Hotel in Zhongshan District.

People familiar with the matter confirmed to this newspaper in the evening that there are indeed relevant plans, and the timing is similar to outside speculation, that is, Pelosi will arrive in Taiwan tomorrow night and stay overnight. Regarding some scholars and experts suggesting that Pelosi [will] communicate with Taiwan via video or a technical short stay, the person bluntly said that since [s]he came to Taiwan, there is no high-profile or low-key difference. The US has planned public activities and is expected to meet the Legislative Yuan on Wednesday. However, the matter involves agility, and Taiwan and the United States are always ready to respond to possible changes.

A person told The Wall Street Journal: “She’s definitely coming. The only variable is whether she spends the night in Taipei.”

Pelosi’s office listed Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia as places she will visit. No one mentioned Taiwan.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping threatened President Joe Biden last week over the visit.

Biden told Xi that the US hasn’t changed its policy.

Saloni Sharma, a National Security Council spokeswoman, said: “A Speaker of the House has visited Taiwan before without incident, as have many members of Congress over the years, including this year. There is no reason for Beijing to turn a potential visit consistent with longstanding U.S. policy into some sort of crisis or conflict.”

Sharma also said Pelosi will make her own decisions regarding the trip “because Congress is an independent branch of the government.”

Couldn’t she just order take out?

She has to visit Taiwan and even stay over night if need be. Maybe two.

Taiwan should clearly be her first stop now. If she’s going anyways, she might as well emphasize the point that the independent sovereign county of Taiwan is our ally.

How badly will she embarrass us?

If she gets shot down, I’m not sending my kids to war over it. Instead, I’ll write Xi a thank you note.

Donald Trump is right she shouldn’t.

Danny CCP quoting President Trump, what a laugher.
Oh ans a lie, whoda think it?

Here is what Trump said, and I agree:

“Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that “the China mess is the last thing she should be involved in — She will only make it worse.”

“Everything she touches,” he wrote, “turns to Chaos, Disruption, and ‘Crap.’””

All true but nothing I can find where he suggest she should or should not go.

    The real Trump:
“In office, Trump agreed to follow the policy. But his administration was vociferous in its support of Taiwan and antagonism toward Beijing, with some observers suggesting officials wanted to force the Biden administration, which followed Trump’s, into confrontation with China.”

Nothing china owned Danny ever says is true.

Hey POS your quote proves that Trump actually did agree with me.

Furthermore you also established that Trump’s policy was not to march to war with China under the assumption their red lines wouldn’t be enforced.

Like it or not you and maybe Pelosi if she does end up going are unique on this planet for thinking risk of deteriorating a situation into a war is worth a picture.

Trump said she shouldn’t go, that her going would make the situation worst.

Like it or not you are an utter and total POS, fiends like you are exactly the excrement who got purged during the only purge the Republican Party ever had (See John Birch society).

Your kind had the reins when we invaded Iraq, when we launched the occupation of Afghanistan, when we overthrew the Libyan dictator etc. In no case did your “HUR HUR HUR MUH WAAARRRRR!” policy ever produce a positive outcome.

By the way Trump speaks in hyperbole not literally he signed a trade deal with China; one more positive towards America than previous ones but that trade deal was his policy and like every trade deal ever signed was meant to benefit both parties.

Trump is a lot more ordinary than his rhetoric would have you believe, and has nothing in common with you Barry.

They will send a plane to see what happens, but she won’t be on it.

I’m not worried about China doing anything to Ms. Pelosi.

I’m worried about what demands Ms. Pelosi will make to Taiwan.

She’s just looking for new server farms to run all the upcoming election data through and insure another steal for the Ds.

Trump said that?
He’d be the first to go

Surprised and disappointed

Danny in reply to gonzotx. | August 1, 2022 at 2:42 pm

    Why?

There are high ideals and interests worth risking violent confrontation and warfare.

A photograph just isn’t one of those, and I am glad Donald Trump and Anthony Blinken could both agree on that.

America needs to be more like Eisenhower in terms of benefit to risk assessments.

    The_Mew_Cat in reply to gonzotx. | August 1, 2022 at 2:44 pm

Of course she should not go. Trump has no confidence in Biden and neither do I. If there is a confrontation, Biden will ensure that the USA loses.

Voyager in reply to gonzotx. | August 1, 2022 at 7:34 pm

Sometimes one has to play hardball, but when one does, one must either know how far to push before one gets a brick in the face, or be prepared to take it if it comes.

I do not have confidence that he current administration has the judgment or spine to handle either case.

What are we going to do if Chinese jet come up to escort her plane somewhere else? Fire? Ignore them? Get into a mid-air?

If something goes wrong, how will the administration respond? Will they firmly direct China to take accountability for it? Will they try and sweep the whole thing under the rug as a regrettable accident? Will they pretend nothing happened for weeks until it becomes obvious that something went wrong?

There’s a lot that can go very wrong here without anyone even trying anything profoundly stupid, and I’m not confident that the person juggling the chainsaws is sober or competent.

Keep in mind she is going with 5 Dem House members, so if she gets shot down, the House temporarily flips (R). Can you i9magine the chaos with McCarthy having a 1 seat majority and debating a declaration of war on China?

Nanzi don’t be afraid to take one for the team, we’re counting on you

Sorry
Can’t let china call the shoots
But I agree, Biden amd his trans military with non citizens would be a disaster

The very dumbest among us pocking the dragon.

In all the articles about her trip I have yet to read one that begins to explain the point of her trip in the first place.
That being said, she has no choice NOT to visit Taiwan now, without appearing to kowtow to China’s threat.

    Danny in reply to DelightLaw1. | August 1, 2022 at 8:34 pm

Either that or that she is kowtowing to literally everyone in the U.S. Department of State including the secretary of state, the President of the United States and other top officials claiming this is a horrible idea.

Fat_Freddys_Cat | August 1, 2022 at 3:58 pm

I don’t see that any useful purpose is served by legislators making any taxpayer-funded foreign visit. The theory, I hear, is that this makes them better informed but their performance leads me to doubt that theory.

Tell China we will air drop her over mainland China in a large parachute! We will fax the coordinates!

Best comment I’ve seen –

The chinese have captured pelosi and are demanding $100,000,000,000 to not send her back home.

Yet another scab pick by a country with a compromised immune system.

An extremely dangerous Democrat unforced error used to distract the public from their gross incompetence.

There is NO reason for Pelosi to be visiting Taiwan. None.

Let’s see…I’m Xi. I want Pelosi to remain in power, possibly even as president of the US. How do I endorse her? If I come out and say how wonderful she is, US voters, not liking China will see that as a negative. So I’ll make a deal with her. She will say she’s visiting Taiwan. I’ll appear to oppose that, even as far as making threatening noises about potential war. She’ll come anyway, which will make her look strong. That should be good for at least a few hundred thousand votes, and we haven’t had to spend a penny on her.
