A few weeks ago, California Governor Gavin Newsom was mocked and derided for running an ad in Florida attacking its governor, Ron DeSantis.
Apparently, Newsom remains more interested in Florida than California. He donated a nice chunk of change to DeSantis’ opponent in the upcoming gubernatorial race.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Thursday announced a $100,000 donation to the campaign of Rep. Charlie Crist, who earlier this week secured the Democratic nomination to take on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in November’s general election.“Time to make Ron DeSantis a one-term governor. I’m pledging $100k right now to @CharlieCrist. Who will join me in helping Charlie become the next Governor of Florida?” Newsom tweeted.Crist on Tuesday won Florida’s Democratic gubernatorial primary to take on DeSantis, who is seeking a second term. The Cook Political Report rates the race “likely Republican,” meaning the election analysis site predicts DeSantis is likely to win reelection.
DeSantis recently said that White House covid advisor Dr. Antony Fauci should be “chucked across the Potomac” in the wake of the numerous pandemic policy failures. Newsom is using that statement to morally justify the donation.
“I don’t like bullies. I don’t like people that demean people. I don’t like people to talk down to people,” Newsom said.The Democratic governor also spoke out about DeSantis’ comment about Dr. Anthony Fauci when the Florida governor said “Someone needs to grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac.””I didn’t like what DeSantis said about Fauci the other day,” Newsom said. “He may disagree with him, but to call someone pejorative terms because they’re short — I mean, who the hell raised these guys? What kind of people are they?
Meanwhile, a little closer to home, California saw an uptick in violent crime over the past year during Newsom’s time in office, including an increase in homicides.
The figures are part of the California Criminal Justice Statistical Report released by state Attorney General Rob Bonta.”While crime rates remain significantly below their historical highs, property and violent crimes continue to have devastating consequences for communities across the state,” he said in a statement. “Gun violence in particular remains a consistent and growing threat.”According to the data, California saw a 7.2% increase in homicides 2,202 in 2020 to 2,361 in 2021. The latest figure is far from the state’s historical high of 4,095 murders in 1993. Around three-quarters of the killings involved a firearm, Bonta’s office said.
The backlash against Newsom as the result of this stunt is priceless.
