U. Michigan Medical Students Walk Out on Pro-Life Speaker During Initiation Ceremony

What a bunch of babies.

Dozens of new medical students at the University of Michigan and their parents walked out of their initiation ceremony to protest pro-life Dr. Kristin Collier, an assistant professor at the medical school.

The initiation ceremony includes receiving your medical white coats and taking the White Coat Pledge and the Hippocratic Oath.

The students pressured the administration to cancel Collier’s speech. They claimed to be “scared” of what Collier could say in her speech. How old are these people because holy cow:

Students say they are scared about what will happen to abortion in Michigan, where a 1931 law that bans the intentional killing of preborn babies is enjoined due to a lawsuit.Collier’s speech worries them more. “I’m already scared that I’ve chosen to attend school in a state where I may very well lose my right to a safe abortion, and the decision by UMMS to have Dr. Collier as a keynote speaker makes this even scarier,” one student stated.“It makes me seriously doubt whether the school will continue to advocate for reproductive rights,” the student allegedly stated.“I am attending UMMS in large part because of their progressive approach to health care and education, and the choice to have Dr. Collier as keynote speaker makes me question my decision,” another student wrote.

Good for Marschall S. Runge, MD, Ph.D., Dean of the Medical School of the University of Michigan, because he refused to cancel the speech. He stressed the  “critical importance of diversity of personal thought and ideas, which is foundational to academic freedom and excellence.”

Runge wrote:

Kristin Collier, M.D., was chosen as the keynote speaker for the 2022 White Coat Ceremony based on nominations and voting by members of the U-M Medical School Gold Humanism Honor Society, which is comprised of medical students, house officers, and faculty. The Society chapter, which was formed at U-M Medical School in 2016, represents exemplars of humanistic patient care and who serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine. We have received both positive and negative feedback on the choice of our keynote speaker. The White Coat Ceremony is not a platform for discussion of controversial issues, and Dr. Collier never planned to address a divisive topic as part of her remarks. Our values speak about honoring the critical importance of diversity of personal thought and ideas, which is foundational to academic freedom and excellence. We would not revoke a speaker because they have different personal ideas than others.

Collier did not get political in her speech. Instead, she praised the students and offered them advice. She never planned to talk about abortion or Roe v. Wade:

“I want to acknowledge the deep wounds our community has suffered over the past several weeks,” said Collier as she began her speech, which was not about abortion, apparently referencing the controversy.“We have a great deal of work to do for healing to occur,” she continued. “And I hope that for today, for this time, we can focus on what matters most: coming together to support our newly accepted students and their families with the goal of welcoming them into one of the greatest vocations that exist on this earth.”
