San Francisco school district drops ‘chief’ from job titles
San Francisco Unified School District will reportedly no longer use the word “chief” in job titles in an effort to respect Native Americans.
“While there are many opinions on the matter, our leadership team agreed that, given that Native American members of our community have expressed concerns over the use of the title, we are no longer going to use it,” spokesperson Gentle Blythe told the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Chronicle reported the decision was made Wednesday and a replacement term has yet to be determined.
“By changing how we refer to our division heads we are in no way diminishing the indispensable contributions of our district central service leaders,” Blythe told the Chronicle.
The school district employs 13 officials who use the word “chief” in their titles, the New York Post reported, adding that as of Thursday morning, the monikers had not yet been changed on the website.
But the Post pointed out that the word “chief” can trace its origins to the Old French word “chef,” meaning “the head of a group” — however “it has come to be closely associated with Native American tribal leaders known as ‘chieftains.’”
Sanitizing and being sensitive to Native American concerns on schools, colleges and universities has been a trend for years. Most notably, many mascots have been scrubbed while “land acknowledgments” have been added to syllabi.

The American Indians didn’t originally call their leader a “chief,” but it was the Europeans who started using that term, which came from old French and old English, and the Indians picked it up.
Next, the woke police will have to stop using the term “blanket.” That term came from the Europeans, and the Indians picked it up. Blankets have come to be identified with Indians, so that word must be banned.
There are a bunch more: Feather, headdress, pony, etc.
It actually looks like they would rather deal with BS like this than do anything real. This is a common syndrome with “leaders” who are in way over their heads.
They removed the word, “Chief” and added the word, “Head honcho.”
It’s still the same thing, but by renaming they made a lot of progress.
They also said they have eliminated the potential for school shootings as they have been renamed “learning place incidents.”
Who, actually, complained? I mean aside from ugly obese whites women with hyphenated names?
I’m old enough to recall the Indian head Western Airlines livery. The Chief and Super Chief express trains out of Los Angeles. Indian head coins. I DON’T recall anyone complaining about any of this.
“Chief” wasn’t a native American term. That’s what the white guys called their tribal leaders.

They are banning the wrong word. Now if they banned use of “sachem” and “sagamore” they’d be closer to the mark.
