Police: Waukesha Suspect ‘Intentionally Drove His Maroon SUV Through Barricades Into a Crowd of People’

Police Chief Dan Thompson confirmed five people died and 48 people, including 18 children, were injured after a driver plowed through a crowd at the Waukesha Christmas parade. Ten children are in the ICU. Six of them are in critical condition.

The victims include four women and one man. The age range is from 52 to 81.

The authorities have Darrell E. Brooks Jr. in custody. Thompson said he “intentionally drove his maroon SUV through barricades into a crowd of people.”

Thompson said they will charge Brooks with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide. Brooks could face more charges.

Thompson also confirmed Brooks “was involved in a ‘domestic disturbance'” before he allegedly drove through the crowd:

“We have information that the suspect prior to the incident was involved in a domestic disturbance which was just minutes prior and the suspect left that scene just prior to our arrival to that domestic disturbance,” the chief said.”When the suspect was driving through and into the crowd, one officer did discharge his firearm and fire shots at the suspect to stop the threat but due to the amount of people, had to stop, stop and fire — not fire any other additional shots,” he continued.Thompson added that the officer has been put on administrative leave. He noted that there is “no evidence” that this is a terrorist incident.
