Democrats at the state and national level, weighed down by a struggling Biden administration and an economy in seeming free-fall, have felt the brunt of voter antipathy over the past several months. This has led many to believe the Republicans could achieve historic gains in the 2022 mid-term elections, typically unfriendly to the party with the incumbent in the White House. Some high-level democratic strategists, however, believe they’ve hit on the issue that will save their electoral prospects next year: Critical Race Theory, or CRT.
According to a report in Business Insider:
They’ve called it a “racist dog whistle” and a “lie.”But those messages haven’t helped Democrats tamp down the uproar Republicans are fueling over “critical race theory,” now a misused catch-all term for teaching on race and diversity in K-12 schools that’s firing up protests at school board meetings around the country.In Virginia, Republican Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin exploited the term and pledged to “ban” it in classrooms on his first day as governor, even though critical race theory — an academic approach to examining racial bias — is most often taught in law schools. Republicans plan to lean into the issue in the 2022 election cycle.Democratic strategists say the party should hit back harder against “divisive” GOP claims while not losing sight of the priority for voters; the economy.”On a political level it’s a real threat that is allowing Republicans to claw back the inroads that Democrats have made in the suburbs over the last couple of election cycles,” said Jim Manley, a longtime aide to former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.Democrats haven’t yet pushed back on this issue enough, but the “good news” is the party’s response is effective and there’s time to make the case before the 2022 elections, said Jesse Ferguson, a Democratic strategist. They just need to make the case “relentlessly,” he said.
The opposition to CRT remains fierce, with thirteen states having banned it in public schools to varying degrees, and half a dozen other states poised to pass similar bans in 2022.
It remains unclear how strategists could refer to the democratic response to angry parents rebelling at school board meetings and the polls as “effective.” Their case, it seems, consists on doubling down on the same divisive language they’ve used for the past few years as parents expose radical lesson plans in public schools.
Evidently, they just haven’t pushed back hard enough yet.
Ferguson, the previously quoted democratic strategist, went on to say:
“Voters run from the Republicans when Democrats peel back the onion on what these claims really mean,” he said. “It’s not just that Republicans want a bigger role for parents in education, it’s that Republicans are willing to let white supremacists write curricula.”
Maybe. Or maybe parents see the obsession with defining American society as “white supremacist” and to hold one race responsible for defending its power over another for what it is—an inaccurate understanding of the very origins of our constitutional republic, and a thin veneer for debunked marxist oppression theory.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is in the unenviable position of having to put a positive spin on the disaster 2021 has been for democratic politicians nationwide as parents take back control of government schools via their local school boards. According to the article:
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the House campaign arm for Democrats, downplayed the threat to the party in congressional races. This fall, they tested responses to false claims about critical race theory in K-12 schools. The messages they say resonate most with battleground voters: Democrats want to teach the truth about US history and honor those who fought to make the country better, Republicans are trying to divide Americans and Democrats want to deliver for American families.
Once again, the DCCC follows the gameplan of the radical supporters of CRT, by putting forth the false premise that opponents want to censor the “real history” of race in America. Those who oppose CRT have consistently said nothing in their message means America’s schools shouldn’t teach the accurate history of race relations—including slavery, Jim Crow laws, desegregation, and other difficult periods in American history. One would think, at some point, they’d want to put forth a positive, aspirational message of America’s present and future, to attract undecided voters instead of guilting them into staying home or hating their country.
Of course, calling their operation racist and white supremacist is nothing new for democrats—it’s been their modus operandi for decades. The tactic took on obsessive levels in recent years, leading to a massive backlash by parents. Amusingly, democratic leadership’s message has gone from denying CRT exists to denying it’s being taught to giving it a full-throated defense and believing that incorporating it into public schools is an electoral winner for them. This takes lacking self-awareness to an art form—especially considering the electoral results in Virginia and elsewhere just a few weeks ago.
Then again, as LI’s Fuzzy Slippers put it prior to election day, “If Glenn Youngkin Wins. It Should Give The Biden Left Pause, But It Won’t,” saying, Ultimately, radical anti-American Democrats don’t care one whit what we, the people, think or want.”
